Hi, my name is Michael. I am 10 years old. I would like a bike so I could be like other kids. I want to sometime be on the team. Can you please help me?
Thank you, Michael Barreto
Dear Athletes Helping Athletes,
I am writing this letter on behalf of my son Michael Barreto who is 10 years old. Michael was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and has been in a wheelchair since he was two years old. I have always encouraged Michael to try new things and to try not to be afraid of it. Michael is an only child and only a couple of close friends that he spends time. Michael enjoys being around other kids and likes to cheer them on during sporting events. I would like to be the one cheering Michael on.
I have been taking my son to Seattle Wheelchair Jamboree for the past 4 years now. The jamboree has shown him all of the different sports that are available for people with disabilities. I want him to be in a sport that he enjoys and feels good about.
Michael was especially interested in the handcycle. Each year at the jamboree, he rides the handcycle around the track. This year he almost did a mile. Michael really enjoys this sport and knows that he would be great at it if given the opportunity.
Due to being a single parent and just purchasing our first house, money is tight. I would really appreciate if you can give Michael a chance to feel like he is part of a team and a sport that he enjoys.
