Dear Athletes Helping Athletes, The main reason I would enjoy a handcycle would be to help stay in good shape and stay healthy. I was, and still am, a very active kid. Before my accident, I was training everyday to become a professional motorcross racer. I went to L.A. Fitness gym and rode my road bike almost everyday. I really enjoyed riding my road bike because it was fun, but still a really good workout. I had a chance to ride a handcycle the other day and absolutely loved it! It was one of the best times I've had since I've been hurt. If I get a handcycle I will definitely put it to use because of my ultimate goal is to compete in the Ironman in Hawaii. I am fortunate enough to know one of the most amazing guys in the world, David Bailey, who has won the Ironman. He would be willing to train me to follow in his footsteps. So the bottom line is that I would love to have the opportunity to push myself physically on a handcycle.
Thank you, Ricky James July, 2005
My son Ricky was injured on March 10, 2005 in the National Amatuer Motorcross race. He went head first into a dirt embankment and broke his spine at the 7. He is paralyzed from the chest down. He was in very good physical shape so his recovery time was very fast. Thankfully he plans on staying active and says he is looking forward to helping others have a positive attitude. Ricky has always been athletic, he has played alot of sports (baseball, basketball, roller hockey, BMX) but his love was riding motorcycles. He knew that training, exercising & eating healthy was important to compete at this level. Ricky rode his bike almost everyday and I know he misses it very much. He rode a handcycle the other day and said it was one of the best days since his accident.
