My name is Derec. I am six years old. I have a service dog named Heinz. We love to play and go places and love all kinds of sports. I think it would be fun to have a handcycle so I can do things like my older brother Dimitri. Dimitri does all kinds of sports but I always say I can't because I can't walk but now I can if I get a handcycle. Thank you for letting me write to you.

Your Friend, Derec Bogue
My son Derec has a very rare form of a disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease and even thought CMT is actually very common Derec's form X (CMT1X) is very rare. He not only has perpherial Nerve Damage being done but his Central Nervous System has also been effected. He is the only child with this disease where the central nervous system has been affected. He is one out of six in the world where his central nervous system has been affected by this disease causing abnormal white matter in the brain. He is the only person in the world with this form of CMT where he does not walk because of this. Derec's IQ is not affected by this disease. This summer we became aware of your Athletes Helping Athletes and thought this would be a great way for Derec to become a part of his community, gain confidence, and the exercise he needs to gain strength to walk one day! He would also be able to join the family in bike rides, as well. Thank you so much for reading about Derec and considering his application for a handcycle.
