Bobby Tiesler
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Bobby Tiesler, and I have a T5 level spinal cord injury. I am writing to you today
to ask if you will build me a handcycle. I am 16 and I am currently a student with a part time
job. During the school year, I am way too busy with school and work that I don't have time to
go to the gym. When I do go to the gym I find that, there are not machines I can get into. I
need something at my house that can help me stay active exercising. Please help me out.
Sincerely,
Bobby Tiesler
Dear Athletes Helping Athletes,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Colleen Tiesler and I am writing this letter on behalf of
my son Bobby. Bobby was injured on May 18, 2004 at the age of 14. He sustained a spinal cord
injury and is now a T5-T6 level of injury. Before he was injured, Bobby enjoyed all types of
sports, but his favorites were motocross and soccer. He especially excelled at motocross and
was one of the top ten riders in the country, for his age group. He has always had a need for
speed.
Since his injury, his father and I have been constantly looking for new sports activities. We
have tried many things, but nothing caught his interest. So, we just didn't push the issue
anymore. We were hoping that one day something would catch his interest. One Saturday we were
at Shriners in Tampa and a friend had a handcycle in his truck. His friend asked Bobby to take
it for a ride and Bobby was hesitant at first, but finally he got on. About two hours later, we
had to pry Bobby out of the handcycle. He said the words we have been waiting to hear, 'Boy
that is Awesome!' Since then we have been meeting his friend so that Bobby may ride his
handcycle.
Now we think it is time for Bobby to have his own, but unfortunately, we are unable to get this
for him. This is where I am hoping that Athletes Helping Athletes will be able to help. Bobby
has that need for speed and this is the right sport for him. In addition, the physical therapy
and fitness he could gain would be extremely good. So, if there is anything you can do for
Bobby, we would really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance for your consideration on this issue.
Sincerely,
Colleen Tiesler
