For those of us in San Diego, Paula Newby-Fraser is not your everyday hometown girl. Over the years, Newby-Fraser's name has become synonymous with champion and legend while she gained world-fame for her remarkable accomplishments in triathlons and the notorious Ironman events.

Her awards and distinctions are numerous and well-deserved. From "Greatest All-Around Female Athlete in the World" (ABC's Wide World of Sports) to her extraordinary 24 wins in Ironman events, eight of those being for the World Championships in Hawaii, Newby-Fraser is head and shoulders above the rest.

As a child in South Africa, where she admits to being a "couch potato," this great athlete took herself to the ultimate levels of peak fitness and performance. She won an unprecedented four Ironman World Championship races in a row and was the first woman to ever break the 9 hour mark in the Ironman distance. She also still holds the course record in Hawaii at 8:55:28 (1992) and the women's world record at 8:50:24.
