Lori Calise - Long Beach, NY
I have run two marathons and participated in the Avon Breast Cancer three day walk all to
raise money and awareness for several different charities. It makes you feel awesome and gives
you a chance to help in some way.
I ran my last marathon in support of NARSAD, an
organization here in Long Island, New York that is amazing but unfortunately does not get
much recognition because of the stigma attached to it. I was inspired due to a
friend's diagnosis. I must say I was
impressed with the organization. The marathon was in NYC in November
2005 and with the help of my company match I was able to raise approx $2100.00.
I run to stay in shape (I am admittedly a "back of the packer" runner and my PR was
in the 2003 NYC marathon where I ran a very humble 5:34), but to also clear my head. My first
marathon in 2003 came at a turning point in my life and I was grateful for the sport of running
and for the discipline that the training afforded me, as well as the increased sense of
confidence and pride.
I have taken a break from the full marathons and am continuing to stay in shape and run some
shorter races including the Tunnel to
Towers run in New York on September 24th.
