The most comfortable and supporting running shoe tried to date. Greatly reduces plantar fasciitis injuries. Best on road and pavement. Very good on easy off-road conditions but go for a shoe with higher ankle support for rougher off-road conditions.

Great shoe overall

5

I don' think the 3.5 ratings are deserved. This is the hands-down best running shoe that I have ever had. It does have a couple of problems (what shoe doesn't), but let me tell you .. I have tried other shoes and by far the Kayano's have been the best. When I had the Kayano 14's it was heaven compared to the next Brooks shoe I had. I next got the Kayano 15's and thought they were okay, but after wearing them running a few times they hurt one of my feet really badly. The 15's I hated .. and especially after the 14's. Well, before it really came out I ordered the 16's (it could only be ordered online at a couple of sites) to see if it changed .. it did! No more soreness - I run under a 7-minute mile so I really put my shoes through the paces. It is very comfortable but there are some negatives (not huge): 1. The tongue fabric tends to retain wetness. The previous models did not. This is not a huge gripe by any means, but it does. 2. Probably the thing I dislike the most (but others may like) - is that the shoe is 'shorter' .. I like the shoe to come up a little higher on my ankle for more support. It is a very big deal to me, but I realise that others really like the opposite, so I am not faulting the shoe. This is due to the fact that I have flat feet (hey, I'm being honest). 3. As a previous reviewer posted .. it's true .. the back heel material of the shoe wears really fast. This is bad design. There is a hole in the fabric after having this shoe not that long. With that being said - those little things are nothing compared with the comfort of this shoe for running (at least for the fit and wear on my feet). Best running shoe I have had so far .. but can be improved. I thought that the 14's could not be topped, but this one is better.

A good shoe

5

A good shoe. Please bear in mind that this review is based only on 1 run (4 miles). I normally wear Nike Equalon 4 or Mizuno Nirvana 6 and this shoe seems to fit right in the middle of those 2. It has a good forefront shock absorbing with the gel, like the Equalon, but not quite as squissy a ride. The Nirvana has a rock steady ride with less cushioning but it makes up by placing your foot in the correct position and thus not needing as much cushioning. The heel is very good and grips like the Nirvana which on the heel I rate better than the Equalon, even with the new strap. The Kayano seems to fit right in between the 2, not quite as soft as the Equalon and not as firm as the Nirvana. This is a quality shoe and feels like a warm shoe, mabe because of the plastic side panels. The asymetric lacing was not intrusive to me and seems to hold the foot equally as good as normal. Size wise for me 1/2 a size up.

A marathon after 50 miles?!?! Really?!?!

5

I'm a 54 y/o male whose been running for 9+ years, and ran my first marathon at 50. I'm not a small guy (6 ft, 175 lbs) My feet have been described as, "shaped like canoe paddles", narrow heels and a fairly wide forefoot. Oh, yeah, and they're size 14. Usually when I go out it's for 8-12 miles, 35-40 miles a week. It used to be more, but a new job has cut into running time. I've been going through 1-2 pair of Keyanos since the XI. I've like most of them (except the truly abyssmal XIII which caused my brief daliance with Brooks)and have been what one would term a loyal ASICS customer. The XVI is the first and only shoe from ASICS, or anyone else for that matter, that felt great right out of the box. I also broke my cardinal rule and ran last week's Maine marathon after only 50 miles on the shoes. Normally it's 100 miles or more. I pleased to say that there was nary a twitch or twinge during or post-race. I can see this shoe becoming a "classic" that I'll buy year after year.

Best structured trainer ever bought!

5

Upgraded from the Asics 2140, ran in 2130, 2120, 2110. Kayano 16 a big upgrade. I am a pronator and this shoe offers the best structure/stability of any shoe on the market but with decent cushion and excellent shock absorption. A little heavier than the 2140 series, but well worth it for the extra stability and shock absorption. A must for marathon trainers who need stability! Only shoe on the market with similar stability is the Mizuno Nirvana 6, but you love or hate these shoes. Nirvana 6's offered excellent stability, but they had the feel of running on 2 bricks (awefully stiff ride...beware). I'm sold on Kayano's, I'm going to be a long customer of these. P.S. I've logged 4 months of running on these shoes (run around 30 miles a week). They feel great! Only complaint is that sole wears quickly, but so did all of the other asics I've run in (2110, 2120, 2130, 2140).

I buy it again and again!

5

I run a lot of miles in Colorado on both paved trails and mountain trails. The Kayano is an excellent shoe as the forefoot cushioning is fantastic and gets better as it breaks in. I love the fact that it is light enough for speed work and doesn't pound your knees and hips on the long runs. The shoe breathes well on the humid days to keep your feet dry. If you run 50-70 miles a week this is a great shoe to use. If you wear inserts they work in the shoe very well. I rotate this shoe with a pair of New Balance shoes and by doing this every run is great!Try the Kayano you will not be disappointed and if you are returning from an injury this is the shoe to switch too.

Total Cush with a wide toe box too!

4

The Gel Kayano 16 offers excellent cushioning, and a most comfortable toe box. I love the silver with any color (especially red), the dark almost black mesh go well with any attire. I do think the shoe wears out too fast (I do workout on hard surfaces - macadam) and may be a bit too flexible. the 15's were stiffer and gave the feeling of better support. No other shoe accommodates orthodics as well as the Kayano and I love the high arches. While I used to run 6 miles every other day, currently, I'm reduced to walking two miles daily. Overall, this is the best shoe available for the money. The Kayano cushioning is unparalleled! Haven't worn anything else for over 20 years (that's no exaggeration)and find the shoe an absolute life saver.

The heavy runner shoe of choice

5

I'm a retired U.S. Marine living in the New Mexico Desert. The Asics Gel Kayano 16 is a versatile shoe and transitions well between pavement and dirt/rocky sides of the road. I'm a heavy runner, 72" tall and 224lbs and I run on average 19 miles a week. This shoe provides awesome support, comfort and is very durable. I especially like the "feel" of the gel cushion, especially when running on the side of the road. The shoes are light and very fast! I haven't found too many things that are not great about this shoe. The shoe sizing is right on. If you are a heavy runner like me and need great support from your running shoes, then you won't go wrong in purchasing a pair of Asics Gel Kayano 16's. Semper Fi,

No more orthotics for me!

5

For 23 years i've worn prescription orthotics. Well no more! I'm an avid marathoner...averaging about 65 miles per week...and after a few trips to the podiatrist we came to the conclusion that my orthotics may not be right for my feet and pronation style anymore. I've gone back and forth between Asics and Nike, but after putting about 130 miles on my Gel-Kayanos I've finally found a shoe that gives me the support and cushion i've been looking for without my orthotics. The ankle pain I was sufferring from, not to mention my plantar fasciitis, have both ceased and not a moment too soon as I get ready for my first Boston Marathon. Felt lighter than the advertised weight and my legs are thanking me on recovery runs. I'll be doing my marathon training in Asics Kayanos for years to come!

Excellent cushioned shoe!!!

4

I am a 205 pound runner and average about 25-30 miles per week. I was a big fan of the Gel Nimbus series until they changed the design a couple of years ago. I have been in constant search of "my shoe" since. I am not a fast runner (4:30 marathon) and am almost 50 years old, so I am looking for a shoe that will not injure me and allow me to keep on running. I tried the Nike Equalon as well as the LunarGlide 2 and both gave me some knee pain as well as the stirrings of plantar in my left foot. 3 weeks before the Marine Corps Marathon the pain became great enough that I worried that I would not be able to run. I purchased a pair of the Gel Kayanos and got about 100 miles on them before the race. No Pain and a really comfortable shoe. I have put another 100 miles on them in the 3 weeks since the race and are liking them more every day. If you are a bigger frame person who needs the support and cushion, I can't recommend these enough!

Excellent Stability Trainer

4

The Kayano is product with a tradition of excellence when it comes to distance running, primarily on the road. The shoe fits true to size and is extremely durable. I have had good success with the shoe easily lasting upwards of 500 to 550 miles per shoe. The shoe is dedicated to running and easily carries my 6'3" 195lbs frame. The only cons for this shoe are that it is a touch heavy, but then again it is not designed for racing. The color options are extremely conservative and it is not offered in any outrageous statement making styles. I have used this product to train for and complete 6 marathons, one 50k, and an Ironman Triathlon.

Good first shoe for heavy overpronator.

4

I'm overweight and quite the novice. I was looking for a running shoe that would help me with my poor gait and alleviate ankle pain(specifically lateral right ankle pain). I have a small but wide foot which makes shopping in a retail store difficult. I needed a 4E for my width. I was only walking 20 to 25 minutes before, but today I walked 40 minutes with a 5 minute cool down on the treadmill at the gym. The shoe is breathable thanks to the mesh exterior. My only complaint was the outside of my right foot was a little sore but still a big improvement with the ill fittling NIKE crosstrainers I was using. Without being able to compare this shoe to others I haven't tried yet I would recommend this shoe.

Kayanos are still the best

5

Kayanos are consistant performers. Always comfortable, never causes blisters or foot pain. I always get about 300 miles (@ 175 pounds) from them before my body begins to ache, so they aren't as durable as some competitors. The gel provides a nice bounce and it lasts longer in the heals than conventional cushioning. The mid/front tends to flatten out first, which leads to body aches etc toward the end of the lifecycle. I only wear them for running and they generally still look new towards the end. I've never had a pair tear up before they flattened out. They aren't even a little water resistant.....

Only Running Shoe For Me

5

The Kayano 15 is the only shoe that does not cause me some kind of problem. When they "retired" it and brought out the 16 I was pretty worried. I've had the 16s for about a month or so and have found them to be just as good if not better for me. They have a slightly different shoelace design, but this did not seem to effect performance. If it wasn't for these shoes, I would have a hard time running without blisters, shin splints or knee injuries. All of which happened in one form or another while trying different brands last summer.

Best Asics Kayano EVER!

5

I bought my first pair of Kayano's 2 years ago (Kayano 15). A great shoe which literally eradicated my Plantar Fasciatis in just a few weeks. However I found the Kayano 15 to be a bit narrow & tight & Plantar surface of my feet would ache after a 10+ mile run. With the new Kayano 16 - all those issues are in the past. This is a fantastic running shoe, doesn't feel narrow or tight, little to no break-in needed. I typically run in a pair of Brooks Adrenaline for my marathon races - decided to run in the Kayano 16 instead. Had a great run & my third fastest finish!

10K Ready

4

I am new to running and recently purchased these Asics to run a 10K race. I am a large framed runner who needed more stability and cushioning in my shoes. This was my first race ever, so I dont have much experience with running shoes. I was completely satisfied with the shoe comfort and performance, and was able to maintain a comfortable pace throughout the race. After the race I did not experience any pain in my feet or ankles as was the case with my practice shoes (different brand). I will be running another 5K race later this month and will update my review at that time. For now I am completely satisfied with my purchase and would feel comfortable recommending this model to runners needing a stability plus shoe.

I'm a believer

5

I have always been a fairly efficient, neutral runner. I have always leaned toward light cushy shoes for training. The Gel Nimbus has been one of my favorites. However, a few months ago I got plantar faciitus and started looking at some alternatives. I added the orthotics with some benefit. Then for some reason a few weeks ago I put on an old pair of Kayanos to go work in the yard and immediately noticed an improvement in how my arch felt. I went straight to the computer and ordered a new pair. I have been running in them for 2+ weeks now and my injury is improving daily.

Great shoe-just not for Neutral wearers.

5

This is a great shoe... about as good a running shoe as you'll find. It is comfortable and fits like a dream. But it is *not* for someone who requires a neutral shoe. I am right on the cusp between neutral and slight over-pronator, and the fit expert thought this would be a good shoe for me. Unfortunately, it wasn't... I really wanted this shoe to work for me, but it over-corrected my gait and my left leg felt numb. Gave it a couple of weeks, but it just wasn't meant to be. I tried the Nimbus and so far so good.

So glad I found the GEL-KAYANO

5

I have been running ASICs for over 25 years,I recall the GEL 100's, geeze. Anyway about a year ago I was looking for an upgrade to my GEL 2100 series and based upon recommendation from my running store i tried the Kayano and it has met all of my expectations, the additional cushioning, especially in the forefoot continues to pay off as I have never had any serious knee probles during my entire running life. I find the fit to be very snug yet confortable, the shoes are good to go with jeans and a sweatshirt as well as hammering out 6 miles on the road.I would recommend that anyone looking for a cushioned stable ride should check out this shoe.

My first "real" running shoe

4

I'm a noob to running. I've only been running since November 2009, but I run 30 to 40 miles a week. These Asics were recommended by Shoedog and were great. All the previous problems I encountered (shin splints, foot pain, calf pain) disappeared. I have about 325 miles on them and they have begun to show enough wear that I had to get new shoes. I can't comment on "toebox" or "motion control" or any of the other things the pros do, because I have no idea what they're talking about. I enjoyed running in these very much.

Comfortable Running Shoe

4

I have been buying Asics Kayano for over 10 years as well as have experienced the revolution in style while adding the latest in technology of this particular running shoe. Overall it is a wonderful running shoe. This shoe has to be ordered to 1 size up. It may feel slightly tight when trying it for the first time. Traction is great and it is breathable. I remember the first time I purchased Asics Kayano I felt I was bouncing results of the gel technology.

Back to bASICS

5

I have been training for a marathon using the ASICS Gel Kayano. I was completely satisfied with my ASICS but allowed someone to convince me to try a pair of MIZUNO Nirvanas. After a few runs in the MIZUNOs I began to develop pain in my arches. I will be returning the MIZUNOs and purchasing another pair of ASICS Gel Kayanos. I would strongly recommend the ASICS Gel Kayanos to all heavy framed runners with low arches. These shoes provide a snug, comfortable fit, with lots of cushioning and support. From here on out, I'm sticking to the bASICS.

great shoe, especially for crossfit!

5

I train really hard to run half marathons and Spartan races. I like this shoe for crossfit & crosstraining purposes because the shoe absorbs all impact. I'm a mild pronator & dominant in my left leg plus have sensative arches that don't like arch support. The arch support was bothering my right foot until I broke them in, now they are like a dream. On race day I run in Asics Nimbus those work perfect for my feet on long runs.

Asics Kayano 16

4

I've used Kayano's for more years than I can remember. Asics is smart in that they continue to push to improve on a shoe most runners love. Not an easy task. At 200 lbs, I wanted to get a shoe that could handle the pounding. Thankfully the Kayano's have done their job very well. RoadRunner even beat a better price I found online, class act from a class company. I typically replace these once a year and buy 2 pairs to alternate.

Sweet Show for the Large Old Guy

5

At age 66 and with a history of foot sprains, I want a shoe that provides stability, cushioning, and control. The Gel Kayano does all that, and is the most comfortable shoe I've worn in my 40+ years of running/slogging. The recommended fit is one-half size above shoe size; you could go a full size without problems, because the 1/2 size upsizing feels snug. I don't have any problem with the asymmetric lacing. This shoe wears very well and maintains its good qualities over time and miles.

Quality Trainer

5

I am 5 9" 165 lbs. So far, I have ran 170 miles in the Kayano 16. There is plenty of cushioning left and the wear has been minimal. There was an initial break-in time with the shoe. It felt tight and I wasn't sure if I needed to return them for a 1/2 size up. I went on a 12 mile run before the shoe was completely broken in and suffered from plantar fasciitis as a result. But, I don't wear inserts either. Since then, I have gone on long distance runs and no prob. The foot feels great. The shoe has broken-in great. I would definately buy again.

A Very Competent Shoe

4

I am a firm fan of Asics and have been trying out the Kayano 16's. This is my 3rd pair. No matter what style I try no pair ever lasts more then 3-4 months or 400 miles. I wear a 4 width so my choice of styles/options are somewhat limited. That being said I will remain with the 16's for the duration. They are a good reliable shoe and I have been running seriously for over 35 years and have over 25 marathons to my credit so I am very selective in my choice of shoes.

Great Shoe

5

These shoes are some of the most comfortable I have ever owned. I am on my second pair. The only thing I wish is that all of the colors were available in my size. Pretty durable even though they don't appear to be. I have so much problems with my low arches that I rarely can find a shoe that I am comfortable in all day. These are it! I am not an avid runner, but I use these shoes for almost everything.

Gloves for my feet

5

I normally do 5-12 mile runs, every day, and these shoes just keep feeling better and better. The offset lacing is GREAT. No pinching or pressure on the top of my foot. This type of lacing also helps for proper pronation and even foot balance when propelling forward. These shoes fit like a glove. They are comfortable and supportive on fast, slow, short and long runs. Finally, I found something to stick with that works for me.

I'm an ex triathlete/ultra guy. Had to quit running due to ortho doc's orders, multiple knee surgeries (football, rugby, etc. in earlier years). At 60 years and 6'2", 240, I still love to get out and walk every day, and these Kayanos do the job better than anything else I've found, including NB, Adidas, Brooks and Nike. I did about 80 miles a week when I was training for "Team Clydesdale" back in the day! Been an RRS fan since 1983 or so.

I've run in model after model of the Kayano without a hitch but this one disappoints. There are pressure points across the instep and bunion area that various lacing techniques couldn't eliminate. I switched to the Nike Volmero 4 and couldn't be happier. I'm 6'1", 185 lbs.

Best I've ever had! What sets the Kayanos apart from others is the forefoot cushioning -- there's a metatarsal cushion that spreads the toes and almost feels like an orthotic. These shoes solved a numbness problem I was having in one foot and saved my running life. I'd marry them if it was legal. I'm 5'8", 180, medium arch moderate overpronator. Thanks Asics!

I have been running about three years. 35 miles a week, 6-1, on about 190 lbs. General comment, I think feet are like fingerprints, no two identical. I point that out, becuase reviews that dis a shoe because they don't work for them, may be missing the fact that the same shoe works well, or even grat, for others. That said, I have been running in the 14, 15, and 16's. For me, they have always been great. I am a heavy heal striker, so I appreciate the gel. For me, the slightly lower cut on the heal works. The increased box was not apparent, but noted. The lacing was more pronounced that the 15's, but again, worked for me. I did find that the ride of these shoes enduced a more natural gait. I think the best advice to all is, go to a professional for your appropriate shoe and once you find it, use Roadrunner for subsequent purchases. Just my 2 cents.

I purchased these shoes because Asics had a larger toe box compared to other redesigned shoes. I wear a 2w and found these shoes to be very roomy. The break in period was short as the sole is relatively soft. I like the room in the toe box since most shoes pinch my toes together. The heal gives plenty of support while the toe box is plenty roomy. I have used these shoes for 2 months and will be getting another

I am a longtime Kayano wearer and had significant struggles with these shoes. I mixed them into my short runs to break in(I avg about 40 miles per week), and the lack of cushioning led to PF. Big change from prior models so the shoes were sent back and my relationship with Kayano ends with 15.

Pros: I've run in all of the previous versions of the Kayano and really liked the fit and feel. Cons: I wanted to like theses as well, but there are some real differences and quality shortcomings. The toe box is bigger, I'm a 10.5 with "normal" width feet, so be aware. The laces are waaay to long and it seems like you have to really cinch these shoes to get a decent fit. The new lacing hurt one of my feet, just didn't fit well. But the WORST part of these shoes: In only 100 miles a hole was worn through the heal fabric to the point of causing blisters! This same problem happened with my last Kayanos, but it took much longer. I took the shoes back and I'm trying Saucony Hurricanes. So far so good, with much better fit and much less slop all around. The 16's are not worth the money.

Roomier toe box than the 15 with a looser fit, but not too much and is comfortable. However, the asymetric lacing is more aggressive than the 15 and the inside lacing holes run right down the line of the big toe tendon and across it at the bottom. Caused enough pain that after three runs I had to send them back.

My shoes came in today. After a 3 miler, for me, the perfect blend of cushioning and support. The change in the upper overlay (toe area) and the lower heel are definite improvements. The heel does not come up as high on your ankle and the overlay change gives more comfortable feeling in the upper. The Kayano, like Microsoft and Walmart, are at the top and can expect critics.

I ordered a pair. It would be nice if those with negative comments would clarify. Please show more respect to your fellow runners.

This line has seen better days. Time to revamp this series or put it to sleep. Good bye Kayano.

Not the usual Kayano - sole seems really stiff. The '15' was a better shoe.

I've only been a die-hard for 2.5 yrs now but have worn through the 14s, 15s and now have th 16s. Overall cushioning has been excellent maybe a little better in the 16s. I found the 16s to be a little less stable and more roomy though. Which is a negative for me. I adjusted to the lacing but feel perhaps its contributing to the loose feel. Overall like the shoe, could go back to former lacing, and understand my reference is limited outside of Asic.

Feels like better cushion and support in the forefoot as well as better flex. The front is also a wee bit wider. A very plush ride.

Comfy and light, but the inner heel wore out amazingly fast (anyone else have this problem?). Why the flimsy fabric?

Wow ! Have you ever actually run in the shoe? The lacing system looks a little different, thing is, it really works. Run in it, you'll love it.

The Gel-Kayano 16 has a completely changed lace-up area that is installed on the diagonal vs straight up your foot. Very uncomfortable. You can't see this in the photo here and won't know it until they arrive at your home and you open the box.

11/10 09 Your feet will hurt with this lacing. The 15 was OK but the 16 lacing just does not work. The shoe is too loose on the top of the foot so do not try the wide unless your feet are like a duck. Sorry, they are just not worth the $$.

I love these shoes, definitely one of my favorite Kayano models since the 11 - we'll see how long they last, but right now, the forefoot is impressive - I do not understand why the laces are so long - I replaced them with some shorter laces and I feel the fit is now better

IN Colo. we have all kinds of weather. This time of year it can be wet and cold or sunny and mild. Needless to say, these shoes handle it all. I am impressed with the updates made in the shoe from the 15s. I think this shoe deserves a serious look if you are looking for a stability shoe.

I'm 6'1" 240lbs, 40yrs. I had some Nike + running shoes that I bought just to wear (not to run). Started the Couch to 5K program with the Nikes. I thought that I was just out of shape due to all the soreness throughout my body. Started with the shins then knees and finally my back. After 50+ miles, I looked up the issues and basically determined it was the shoes. I didn't care about the dollar amount as long as they are going to help me continue to run. Well I just finished 2.5 miles and the Kayano 16 is amazing! I didn't feel any pain anywhere. I also didn't run for 9 days due to shoe research. Great shoes!

Nice cushion and ride esp in the forefoot but asics seems to fit bigger than other shoes as I had blisters on the inside edge of my heels in 3 miles. I've never had this in any shoes even if they were slightly roomy and this is with a double layer sock. The base of the laces pucker to snug up the shoe (too wide) and the 2150 is also wide in the forefoot too. Don't understand as I've worn almost every version of these two shoes since they came out. Asics please bring back the fit of the kayano 8 or 10 as they were perfect for18 miles out of the box and never had blisters on the inner edges of my heels.

Terrible shoes i regret purchasing the kayano 16 laces are too long you need to buy half a size down as they are too long & they are not soft hey are like running on bricks im getting rid of them ASICS Get it right the 15 felt better but even those needed more cushioning The vest shoes i have ever had are the vomero 4 Love them heaps

I was lucky enough to get a pair of these early! So far I love them! It seems to have a little softer ride which I was told was from an upgraded midsole. They also feel a little lighter which is always a good thing! Still has the same great fit as the 15's. Can't wait to get some more miles in.
