Very nice shoe

By Average Runner

from Oakland CA

Inside has very premium feel and love the sockliner in it and its moisture wicking properties. Im a 5'7 235 and not a lot of shoes cant match this personally for me. Has great support don't feel ankle stress as much as other shoes and less arch pain. Has enough gel to absorb my impacts because I do tend to hit hard. I get way less blisters and "friction burns" with this shoe. 3-5 mile run/jog 3x a week for 7 months (caint do long distance due ongoing injury recovery of feet from before getting these). Very good road grip. Main issue is seems narrow when replace may try a 2E in this version, Also after 7 months rest of shoe has great tread however forefoot towards middle and inner shoe tread is almost flat but rear foot just as much as when I received them. This could be due to being amateur runner or bad technique not sure yet but running 3 years and none of my other shoes wore on forefoot like this. Overall I do recommend this especially for heavier runners who have low/flat arches because those other "maximum" cushion shoes for me create unbearable arch pain and this one has enough cushion/support without being squishy.

Kayano has lost its way

By Hugh

from Charleston SC

Kayano has not been the same since v20. I have been wearing the Kayanos for 6 years without injury - half and full marathons. The 22s look like a more narrow upper, yet it is baggy when you put it on. They seem I had to size up to an 11.5 in the 21 and 22. They juts don't fit quite right. It also seems like the gel pads are in different locations. Really frustrating that a shoe with this reputation has changed so much. They also feel cheaply make. I tried the 2000 and 1000 series and they all feel cheap. It is time for me to move on.

Recently switched to the Gel Kayano from the Gel Nimbus due to an ankle injury and although I only have three runs in them for a total of 20 miles I love them as much or more than the Gel Nimbus. I don't feel that the toe box is too narrow or uncomfortable or too narrow and I have fat feet and very high insteps. Plan on buying a second pair later this week as my rotation pair and I love this shoe.

Toe box too tight compared to 2012-2014 models

By Beachcomer

I have to agree with other comments regarding the toe box. Prior years models of this shoe fit well, but the 2015 model has too tight of a toe box. I can't go up a 1/2 size in length and I'm already at a 4E width so now have to switch back to New Balance. Very disappointing.

Need a Wide Body...Look Elsewhere...Beware

The Kayano 22 is now designed for the narrow footed...I have a big old Fred Flintstone Flatrock foot....this shoe has virtually no height or width compared to previous designs...cant get to my job at the quarry if I cant get my car going...My toes cramped inside that 3D Printed vise like they were in a can of King Oscar Sardines...my big toe never felt worse and my pinky was now conjoined with its neighbour...so for fear of toelio surgery I have left Asics for more expansive pastures...enter the New Balance 1340v2...night and day a remembrance of my old Nimbus but even more comfy...but back to KayaNO...the operative syllable is NO Asics...someone had a brilliant idea...lets cut a corner save some material use a different "last"...and they made it the last shoe I will get from Them...so disappointed...sa·yo·na·ra

Small Toe Pocket

By jnsotte

from Tega Cay, SC

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • Great Heel Cushion

Cons

  • Cheaper Build Quality
  • Significant Design Change
  • Very Small Toe Pocket

Best Uses

I have been a loyal customer for this line of shoes for many years. This newer version has a significantly smaller toe pocket putting pressure on my big toes. Upsizing is not an option as the remainder of the shoe fits well. Larger shoe will present other issues. There is a lot less structural material on the shoes. Mostly mesh now.

At this point i will have to go into a brick and mortar store to find a different brand that understands humans still have big toes.

Good Cushion but toebox feels flatter/smaller

    By Old man

    from Washington DC

I have run in kayanos for years. The cushioning is great in this iteration. My only complaint is that the toe box feel flatter so that the top of the shoe noticeably presses on my big toe. Only an issue while sitting around or walking. Once I start running, not noticed. No blisters or other related issues.
I ordered the same up sizing I have for all past versions. I am 6'1", 175 lbs run 20+ miles/week.

    Tight fit on toes

    By Kevin

    from Medfield, MA

    Verified Reviewer

I've been running in Kayanos for 10+ years and have always gotten the same size. These however are too tight around the toes. There isn't much flexibility in the material on top of the toe box. I ran in them twice, and after each, I had soreness in my big toe on both feet. Lots of pressure on the toe nail. I decided to buy 2 pair of the Kayano 21s instead.

Best Asics yet, not as bad as others have suggested.

        By Running Dude

        from California

        Verified Reviewer

I received my Kayano 22s recently and I love them they are the best Asics I have run in so fay and these are my 3rd pair. Everyone seems to think the shoe fits smaller but I think they may be mistaken, the upper is much more stretchy than the 21s and even though the top of the upper touches your toes your toes are still free the wiggle and splay naturally because they are not restricted by the material. I have been running in Asics' GT-1000 4 for months now, these shoes have the same upper and I can tell you the material stretches as they break in and they don't cause chafing, but I always run in socks.
The toe box is a little cramped but it hasn't impeded my running at all. That said, my longest run in them was only just over 6 miles. Unless the 21s were barely big enough on you I would buy your normal size.
I love that Asics makes all black shoes, no one else does! I hate white soles because I'm weird.

        wears out too quickly

        By Robert the walker

        from Riverside, CA

I use these shoes to walk about 25 miles a week. I have had them of less than 6 weeks and the top of the heal fabric and foam wore a hole to the back of the shoe. The sole was holding up better than the Kayano 21's. These shoes were a replacement for my Kayano 21's which were an even bigger disappointment. I have worn Asics since 1986 and will continue to buy their products...just not the Kayano line!

        • Daily training

I was worried based on what I heard that my usual size 9.5 might be too small. Turns out the size was fine but these seem a tighter fit than the 21's. Probably b/c of the redesigned heel. I like that about this update. Although the 21's were great, they felt a bit bulky and mushy. These seem just the opposite. These hug your feet and seem a bit firmer, both of which I see as positive in my opinion. Some may need to size up. Overall a great update!

        Size Difference

I ordered the newest Kayno as I have for the last several generations. Have always ordered 1 size larger than my street shoe size. I did same with the 22s. Would up sending them back for 1 1/2 sizes larger. Also the toe area felt smaller. If this is the case with the larger size think I'll go back to the 21s while I still have a chance.
When ordering be aware of size difference.

I have worn Kayanos for YEARS. Each new installation has been pleasantly better, until the 22. The amazing cushioning and heel hug is there but the toe box has been made narrower. No longer can I wear these shoes. I am very sad to return my Kayanos and be cast out to find new shoe after >5yrs in my loyal, amazing shoes. Perhaps the 23s will go back to the successful slightly wider toe box.

          How do they do this?

          By Letzrunn

How does this shoe keep getting better, because they took the 19 to zero. Whatever, it keeps me coming back. First off have to say dig this new flash color scheme I got it last year in the Lite-Show, great for night time fun. The most noticeable improvement is the mid-foot which was my biggest dislike of the 21. Now it blends with the rest of the shoe. The 22 is incredible. I can't feel a single pressure point with the shoe on, this is the best attempt of the Fluid Fit or any brand to pull off this type of fit. It's like a mesh you pull on to your foot with solid heel support and the rest of the shoe somehow welded to the bottom. I like the way Asics gives plenty of real rubber for lots of wear and miles. Cushioning and stability, as always the industry standard. They have a luxurious slipper-like feel, total luxury ride. Have to give much love to Road Runner Sports for always being the first to offer this industry monster every season. I want to fill a foam pit with Kayano 22s and jump in it!

Improved over 21, but Kayano 22 heavier

          Pros

          Cons

          • Heavier Than 21
          • Too Tight In Forefoot

          Best Uses

A good shoe, but appears to me that Asics must be targeting to heavier runners. I run 40+miles/week, and have done most of my training miles in Kayano's the last two years (but do speedwork and race in Electro 33). I am 5'9" and 150 lbs, and am feeling that Kayano's are necessarily heavy, and with each update, become more overbuilt and heavier.. Weighed on a food grade scale, my size 11.5 is 12.4 oz for the 19's, 12.9 for the 20 and 21, and the new 22 are 13.1. I'm hoping to find a 33 series to replace the Kayano as my main training shoe. I do appreciate the improvement in the heel counter in the 22-heel slippage was my major complaint about the 21's.

Very Happy with the new Gel-Kayano 22's. Like the 21's, these are very comfortably cushioned at the heel and fore foot. The toe-box is snug and the heel counter provides great support. I am a mid-foot runner and these allow and guide you to stay in line and I don't notice the high 12 mm toe drop, it actually feels lower that that, which is a good thing for me. At 10.9 ounces the shoe feels light and great for my tempo runs. I'm training for a marathon in November '15 and I'm happy these came out for me to train in and use for the race.

I've already logged 100+ miles on these Kayano 22's and so far it's been very durable. I've also ran in the rain in them and they have pretty good traction. I'm definitely going to buy 2 or more pairs as I love these shoes! Everything I expected in the shoes from Asics!

Only did about 5 runs so far, but has the usual kayano cushion so feels great. I have had the last at least 8 kayano models. I had trouble with the 19s and the 21s with irritation in the heel - to the point where I used those as only walking/around town sneakers and bought a new pair of the old model for running. so I'm watching closely on the 22s but so far so good. Seamless feel is nice.

One warning - I'm a size 12.5-13. I have had 13 kayanos for a long time and the model 22 13s were so tight on me they hurt just wearing them sitting down after a few mins when I first put them on. I exchanged for 14s (no 13.5!) - I was hesitant at first because a massive shoe is almost as bad as too tight but i have to say the 14 fits fine and is borderline too small (and I have NEVER worn a size 14 in any other shoe of any type ever) so I'm curious how others do.

So size up and then so far they are great!

Nice redesign, very comfortable upper with just the right amount of support and cushioning. The last few versions of this shoe have refined an already great product and this is no exception. First five mile run and no issues with fit.
