Some Improvements But a Step Back

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

The original Challenger ATR was a really good max trail shoe but needed some improvements. The tongue was too thin and the padding in the heel bed was too thin. Hoka listened to reviewers and fixed these deficiencies. The ATR 2 version has much more padding in the tongue and heel cup; however, it's obvious that to limit the weight gain, Hoka made the shoe more narrow. I put my ATR 1 against the ATR 2 and the ATR 2 is easily 3-4mm more narrow in the forefoot. I originally picked the Challenger because of the larger forefoot. Now it's too narrow and I'll have to switch long distance trail shoe brands. Come on Hoka, if you're going to make a popular shoe MORE narrow, then come out with a wide version like you did with the Bondi. I only check "recommend" for those with narrower feet.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

Thick sole is very cushioning. One surprise was how much sharp little rocks fatigue the foot. With these running on well maintained trails very nice.

However on wilderness trails with large roots and rocks high profile leverages ankle with poor grip.

I've rim to rim at Grand Canyon great. High altitude peak trails a mistake.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

I have gone through many shoes in my life time. I just counted I have 22 pair of running footwear in closet.

The Challenger ATR 2's rank among the most comfortable shoes right out of the box that I have ever put on. The are also one of the most expensive feeling and most well built shoes I have elver felt. They feel like expensive sports car shoes. Or in the case of the ATR if Lamborghini and Humvee had a mutant child.

The soles are magical. Soft and firm at the same time? How is this possible?

The uppers are breathable, but padded, which again is very hard to pull off.

They are equally at home on pavement, bike trails, grass, and off road.

These shoes truly function for All Terrain Running.

I am a huge fan of the "Door to Trail" category of shoes and these are with out a doubt the best pair I have ever worn. Most DtT shoes are either road shoes with a little bit deeper tread, or trail shoes with a little more cushioning. The ATR pulls off DtT by being purpose built for both it seems.

So if you run on any kind of surface these shoes are a no-brainer.

Tried them out because I wanted a trail runner that fit and felt like the Clifton, and I was not disappointed. They fit like a glove right out of the box, and on my first hilly, rocky, rooty, single-track trail run, they felt fine. Looking forward to a 25k trail race with them this weekend.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

I fell in love with Hoka's when I bought the Stinson ATR's. I still love that shoe but I found that on long runs, the EVA foam was just too soft and that foam tends to compact somewhat quickly. I have a bad sesamoid bone on the bottom of the foot and the Challenger still provides enough cushioning for that injury but without causing fatigue on a longer run. I never thought I would be a runner but now I am and I give Hoka full credit for facilitating my resistance to getting old!

Thrilled the padded tongue finally arrived in the update. Was surprised that it was a bit of a firmer ride than ATR 1 which I loved. Still need to rack up some trail miles on it before I decide it's better than the ride of ATR 1.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

I ran a few average trails around Provo, Utah and they held up fine. Then I went hiking with them for a mile in loose terrain and the shoes shredded like paper. I think these are great shoes when used on the road, single track(non-technical) and for long distances. Don't take them on any kind of traverse, because even though they will perform well, they will deteriorate VERY quickly and you will start losing lugs. All that being said, I see a use for these shoes and that's why I am buying them again. They are also definitely narrower than I'm used to(I'm a frequent Altra user).

This is my fourth Hoka (had three pairs of Mafata Speed) and first Challenger ATR. The Challenger fits my feet like a glove. Very comfortable.I have narrow feet, so it is vital the shoes fit snugly. The tread is excellent for me since I do both trail and road running. Love the shoes!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

These shoes are VERY comfortable. They make running MUCH more fun. I only have 2 real problems, outside of their flimsy tongue. 1.) They are a good 1/2 inch too big. I run 13 solid in all shoes, and these have a good half inch extra on the toe. However this has not impeded my running or comfort. 2.) The biggest problem I've had is the tread literally falling off. I run a measly 1/2 mile a day about 5 days a week. I've run about 30-50 miles in these shoes on either a paved parking lot, or surfaced track. Within a short time, the tread was falling away from the sole. I used Gorilla glue to hold it on, and continue to patch as needed. I love the shoe, but the tread falling off so quickly is very very disappointing. I recommend the shoe, outside of this area of very poor quality. I would hope to buy more, but I need assured this will not happen in the future.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

I train on the trails of the Pacific Northwest. Lots of up and down on varied surfaces. Often wet. This is my second pair of ATRs and I really like them. I love the Hoka cushion and the soles seems to last a decent number of miles. The tread is adequate for all the conditions in which I run and the minimal drop is great. (The flash colors are pretty fun too. I have blue and yellow.) My only concerns are some early wear on the softer materials in the forefoot area and the laces are a bit to "slippery", requiring I lace the shoes fairly tight. I'm thinking of switching to the laces that came on my Valors or Bondis - thicker, softer, with more grip. Overall though, these shoes are making the many miles in the woods more enjoyable than ever. Thanks Hoka! Big fan.

Overall, I have purchased several HOKA rides over the past two years that I started seriously walking. The cushioning is perfect, you do not feel the impact on the ground at all, it is like floating. They are unbelievably light, I am 6'3 and around 230 lbs, so I am putting them through the paces, I do about 30 miles a week. They look great, I am surprised that when ever I wear HOKA, they always receive compliments from others...what are those...who makes those.... I tell them, and a few times I have seen those people out and about and guess what...they are now wearing them as well....way to go HOKA

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

After knee meniscus surgery, I tried the Bondis. Knee felt good but the wear is fast and I found it pretty stiff(the rocker)
ATR is more flexible, has same cushion benefits and for a mid foot, forward runner this is much better than the traditional Hokas which(for me at least) rely a little too much on changing your running form to get used to rocker. ATR flexes well at forefoot, which is not a dramatic changed from a normal shoe.
The knee doesn't even know I am running anymore! It's great

Very good protection and shock absorption. On the other hand, mobility is awesome too. Most impressive is the excellent GRIP. I can describe "1 sq inch" is enough for my foot to climb up hill. U have no need to worry when take a quick turn on the rock. Awesome trailrunning shoes.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

The Challenger 2's were my first pair of Hokas. I was sold on them thanks to Sage Canaday. I usually ran my long runs on trails up on a mountain. Well my feet were hurting during the long run, and after - obviously I needed more cushioning. These, and other Hokas, give all the cushioning one needs, while still being featherweight, fast running shoes. I absolutely love these shoes. They are perfect for any distance of trail running, as well as hiking. I have ran about 39.4 miles in them so far. After I bought them, I decided I loved them so much, I needed to make the full transition to Hokas; so I went bought the Clifton 2's - in the awesome ninja turtle green color. I am a better runner now, and a much happier runner. *Special Note* While I love all the colors that are offered for the Challenger 2, I bought the grey ones. The reason for this is that if I wear them in casual clothing situations, or hiking, they really go with everything. This is best because I can't always look like a hipster, with super colorful shoes. So thanks for making the wonderful grey color, that goes with everything! These shoes are a little narrow inside, say, compared to the Clifton 2's. However, I have not had any problems with that. I wear a men's US size 10 in the Challenger 2's as well as the Clifton 2's (which are much more roomier), and I don't have any problems with it. I heard about people ordering half sizes up; I personally did not need to do that. I highly recommend these shoes. I'll be out flying on the trails!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Challenger ATR 2 Trail Running Shoe:

Bought my Challenger ATR's from REI on sale. First day I had already ran in the morning, but wanted to try them out. I started running and felt so good that I ran another 5 miles. I am faster in these shoes, have more endurance, and feel better after a long run. I have had no injuries since I bought them. It might be psychological, but after 700+ miles on this pair I'm sold. I just got a tear on the upper from where my feet occasionally rub, I get the same spot on every shoe I've ever owned with the same mileage on them. I would recommend that you immediately remove the insole and replace it with a good one, the thin insoles it comes with will ride up your heel. I put some old insoles from a pair of Asics in mine and never looked back. I would buy these over and over. They are worth a try for anyone, everyone is different though. This is just my experience. Happy running!

Used this shoe for the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim run. These were not only excellent trail shoes but had no foot pain or aches that I experienced previously on my long training runs. These are my first pair of Hoka shoes and these made all the difference. I was initially resistant to Hokas but I'm now drinking the Kool Aid.

I ran these shoes 4x a week for an average of 25-30 miles. They tend to break down quickly. And for a runner over 180, these shoes don't last. Move to the Bondi 4.

These shoes have a great color scheme! (I hate running in oddly colored shoes.)

Run 3-4x/week. Great mixed road/trail shoe. Not as cushiony on pavement as other Hokas, but it's a trail shoe. 1/2 marathon on pavement just fine. After 4 knee surgeries, I think Hoka is one of the big reasons I'm able to run again. BIG THANKS TO HOKA!!

EVA was flaking away and outsole pieces fell off within 50 miles. Returned and got a second pair and the same thing happened only quicker. OK for groomed horse trail but nothing serious. I have the previous version with 400 miles including two 50 mile ultras and they're still in one piece. New version made in Vietnam previous made in China.. hmmm

Lugs ripped after one 10 mile day on Sierra decomposed granite trail. Add a Vibram sole or similar to these shoes and they'll be trail machines.
