Tracer Vs. Clayton: Better Material but a Toe Cruncher

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

I alternate racing 5K-10K barefoot and in shoes. While I prefer barefoot, I need to run in shoes when the pavement is too harsh. Additionally, I am recovering from slight achilles tendonitis in the left ankle, which requires a lot of healing time, rebuilding and caution. For that reason, I tried the Clayton. These are very stable shoes, and moderately lightweight. Very good and secure on the achilles during a hectic race. BUT the material of the Clayton absorbs a huge amount of moisture from sweat and rain/puddles. Even on a dry day, by the end of a 5K, the extra moisture absorbed by the Clayton and its inserts makes it feel like I am lugging around over a 1/2 pound on each foot. I even get a squeegee-squeegy sound from the shoes at the end of the course. On top of that, I run without socks when I wear shoes. The tongue of the Clayton digs into the top of my foot, leaving a raw area. So, I tried the Tracer. The new material of the Tracer does NOT absorb water -- a huge difference. The tongue is newly designed and completely smooth on a sockless foot. The problem with the Tracer, however, is that it has a built-in toe ridge that forces me to run forward on my foot -- on my toes -- rather than striking mid-sole, as I prefer to do. This toe ridge seems to be a fad in racing shoes these days, and it does not match my running style. I want to choose when to run mid-sole and when on my toes, not be forced into it by the shoe. Consequently, the Tracers force my hips forward and out of line with comfortable running. Hip pain is the result. Beyond that, the toe box of the Tracers is small, and even though I ordered one full size above what I usually run in, the toe ridge and resultant concentration on the toes during running results in big-toe pinching and bumping up against the front and top of the toe box. A week ago, I won the RRCA Senior Grand Masters 5K Maine State championship for 2016 in the Clayton (20:27). I won my age class (60-64) in today's Portland Sea Dogs 5K in the Tracers (20:30). My impression is that the Clayton are more comfortable, but slower, though you have to work for what you get in both shoes by way of speed. (The second time was on a more difficult course). I believe that if the new breathable material were to be used in the future Clayton, and the tongue improved, and perhaps the ounces reduced a bit more, the Clayton would equal or surpass the Tracer.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

took about 3-4 short workout runs for the shoe to finally fit perfectly....since that time though, I've run 2 marathons, and a few shorter halfs, along with training runs ( I have 2 pair) and I wouldn't dream of another shoe... I did replace the insoles with some good thin ones after awhile but it's a great shoe..(5'10 180lbs)..

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

I was really excited to hear this shoe was being made. I had been given my first pair of Hoka's earlier this year(Vanquish 2) and quickly fell in love with the brand. I admit I discovered my sizing had to go up but that was among all brands. I had purchased the Tracers with full intent on racing half and full marathons this year and the tracer delivered! I ran my best half, 1:22:43(which was a 7 minute pr) and best full, 3:24:37( a 48 minute pr), all in the tracers! Now after having switched to mostly 12's I still feel the tracer is too narrow, I'm hesitant to try the next size up since racing flats are suppose to be a little more snug. I've already taken the lacing up an eyelet and wear pretty thin socks. I love these shoes and am even considering no socks if that's what it takes to get them to fit. If anyone's listening, pleaseeee widen the toebox(particularly the hallux area) it just a smidge!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

Great for everything up to the marathon distance. Best for speed and tempo but enough cushioning for everyday runs.

I have wide feet and I initially thought the Tracers would be too narrow but my first run told a different story. The upper wraps around your feet like a well fitting glove and distributes pressure evenly. They are are first pair of shoes that hasn't caused me blisters, even after a fast marathon! I've gone through the range of Hokas including the Bondi's, Cliftons and the Claytons and have had one issue or another with fit (blisters on the inside of my feet on the bondi 3, Clifton 2, Claytons; cut circulation on the Clifton 1, Bondi 1, Huaka.) The Tracers are great even approaching 300+ miles. Another noticeable benefit is the lack of water retention (a problem with the Claytons.)

I would recommend this shoe for anyone looking for a fast, comfortable lightweight show for racing. I will continue to use the Clifton/Infinite for my daily training and for marathon distance racing but the Tracer will be on my feet for racing half marathon or less. Great shoe.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

This is a REALLY good shoe for runs under 14 miles. It is very light and isn't overly cushioned.

My complaint is that the shoe is narrow and has a very tight toe box. It is not a problem for short runs, but makes longer runs (14+ miles) uncomfortable.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

Tried these out for the first time at the track last night for some tempo intervals. Overall I love them. Very light, cushioned yet responsive. My only issue is they are pretty narrow up front. My one foot had no issues but the middle toe on the other foot is bruised from hitting the side of the toe box. First few miles felt great but as the miles racked up it became very painful. To the point where I was concentrating on keeping my toe held back more then I was running. I am going to play with a few different lacing options to see if I can wiggle a bit of room out of them. I really hope I can get it sorted out because they felt great. If not I will try a half size up before moving on completely.

If it helps anyone my go to shoe for the last 5 years was the Newton Distance. This is the first of several shoes I've tried that I like just as much (except for the narrow toe-box).

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

Best for fast pace training and racing thru marathon distance. Good for speed workouts. Very light weight with racing flat feel compared to other Hokas such as Bondi, Clifton, etc. I'm a light runner (120-125 lbs) and the forefoot seems a little too firm for me. I'm sure it feels soft for heavier runners in the 130+ lbs range. I wish the forefoot density would be softer for lighter runners or runners with a smaller shoe size.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

I wasn't sure how I'd respond to the Tracers. I was a minimalist shoe guy-- never had much cusion in my running shoes. Had a stress fracture in my right foot this summer and have turned to the Tracers for my training runs now: needed more cushion in my shoes, but didn't want to give up the having the feel of the road under my feet. I was afraid running in Hokas would be like running in quicksand-- boy was I wrong! These shoes feel light, responsive, and not at all like they're "too much shoe." I always size up on my shoes and did so on these and that worked fine.

These shoes have helped eliminate the pain I was having we're my toes connected to my foot. I had been wearing either nano for crossfit and /or Nike frees. My foot pain started from all the jumping of boxes and ropes as well as runs. These shoes have been a foot saver.

I always loved Hoka's for a training shoe, but for my shorter races that I need to be faster I used to fall back to other brands. These shoes however combine everything with what I love about Hoka mixed with the speed I need to get to the podium.

Bought these as my race shoes and have worn them for track intervals. Very fast shoe and breathe very well in hot weather.
As others have reviewed, this replacement for Huaka is a little roomier in the forefoot, and feels great for a normal width foot.
I assume these will be like all my Hoka's have been--wear out in 150 miles, but I will still buy them. Comfortable shoes are great for old runners like me.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

First, and what I should have realized before I bought it, it's a Hoka. Squishy, narrow, and not super flexible. If you like Hokas, then you will like this. I bought it expecting something more race-y, which to me means very firm (less squish), relatively flexible, and a tight but foot-shaped last and upper. When I try to sprint in these, I still feel the *squish* that prevents me from keeping a high cadence as the compression increases ground contact time (for me at least). Also, I experienced some bruising on my second toes -- should have gotten a 10.5 instead of the 10 that I wear across most shoes. Actually, I typically get a EU 43 as that is more consistent in my experience -- these are labeled as a EU 44 but are way smaller than other shoes labeled as EU 43... not sure what happened there.

In any case, these shoes don't work for me. I also have a pair of Huakas that work well for slow, long recovery runs, but 99% of the time prefer a firm, responsive ride like that provided from Newton, Salomon, and even earlier Altras. I would really like to see Hoka figure out how to shape their last and upper, and make a shoe that has minimal squish.

These would be great for a person who doesn't mind the squish and narrowness (definitely size up though). The weight is top notch, and the technology is solid. I hope my review helps someone who would buy this expecting a real racing flat feel as it really feels more like a slightly lower-profile Hoka. If that sounds good to you, then this will be hard to beat.

I've put in about 50 miles or so in the Tracer and I have been very happy with the shoe. I've seen many reviews saying how narrow it is. While this may be true if you use it as a daily trainer, it fits perfectly as a racing flat. I use this shoe specifically for speed workouts (mile/k repeats, tempos, etc.) and it performs very well. The fit is more glove like than the Clifton 3 (which I train in) but that's what you want in a racing flat. So I would suggest getting your true running shoe size. There's no need to size up. With that being said, I would not recommend using this shoe as a daily trainer. Yes it is very cushioned (for a flat) and light weight, but probably will not hold up as well as a traditional trainer. If you use this shoe for what it is intended for (speed workouts and racing) it will last a long time and save your legs in the process because of its phenomenal cushioning. For reference, I am 21 years old and run collegiate cross country and track. I run anywhere from 60-80 miles a week. And my foot type is average (not a narrow foot but not wide either).

Bought these to go with a new pair of Hoka Clayton's. These are my first Hoka's. I liked the Clayton's so much after a few runs I thought I would try these, described as being more like a conventional trainer. I would use Clayton's for long runs and Tracer's for shorter tempo and speed. I've only run twice in them but so far I am liking them a lot. Incredibly light weight with a plush but not soft ride. You can also feel the "rocker" design that seems to propel you forward. My only regret is that I bought the more subdued color combination; grey/yellow! Maybe my next pair will be the blue/white.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Tracer Running Shoe:

Extremely light, good looking shoe with great potential. However, the fit was so narrow that it felt like a woman's shoe. Hoping Hoka will realize how limited their shoes are. None of their models have an adequate toe box and no option for a wider fit. Disappointed at the missed opportunity!
