Comments about Mens Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe:

Purchased for Fall and Winter trails. Only gave 4 stars due to limited miles, expect my rating could go to 5 after testing durability. Love the laces, a great improvement, they are thin and easy to pull tight, and strong. I also really like the padded heel counter, very comfortable. Can't wait for snow to test traction. Traction was great on wet earth path.

Comments about Mens Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe:

I am a big Hoka fan but don't like the narrow toe box of the Hoka's (and the hefty price!). I am trying these out and feel they are equal to Hoka's in cushioning and they are less expensive. They are also lighter than they look. I LOVE the wide toe box of these shoes! They make a huge difference from the cramped toe box of my Hokas. I am recovering from foot surgery so I haven't run in them yet, but have been wearing them to work out and walk... they are incredibly comfortable and I'm impatiently waiting to start running in them.

Comments about Mens Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe:

I have run 30 trail miles so far with my Olympus, and all I can say is: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THEM!!! Lots of toe room (I was worried that my foot might slip in the shoe when running downhill with the large toe box, but that was NOT the case). I have a neuroma, so I need a lot of forefoot padding, and this shoe delivers! It protects my feet like a hiking boot (but softer to the sole of feet), yet runs like a trail shoe. No foot pain at all! Now, if Altra has a lighter version of this, without sacrificing the forefoot cushion, I'd buy those too (use the Olympus for trail training, and a lighter version for trail races).

Comments about Mens Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe:

I am a very experienced trail runner - I have been doing very technical running for over 30 years. I weigh 150 lbs and am 5'10" and my average training pace is between 5 and 6 minute miles and average between 20-30 miles per week.

I have developed slight arthritis in my knees and began looking for solutions to help with the problem. I found Hoka One One's last year and began running in the Stinson Trail which was absolutely fantastic, hands down the best shoe I have ever run in, which I suppose, is why Hoka One One discontinued the model. I replaced the Stinson Trails with the new Stinson ATRs and was disappointed, the ATRs were severely lacking in upper support which placed a lot of undue strain on my joints. So, I decided to look for alternatives that would give me Hoka-like cushioning but more stability.

A friend recommended the Altra Olympus, so I began doing my research. There is a ton of information on the Altra Olympus all over the Internet. The reviews are pretty unanimous as to the quality of the shoes, the leve of cushioning, room in the toe box, etc. There were some mild criticisms of the sole being somewhat slippery, but those were not unanimous. After extensive reading I felt comfortable with taking the plunge on the Olympus.

When the shoes arrived I unboxed them and tried them on in the house, as I do with all new shoes. One thing I never read about and was unprepared for was the "rocker" effect of the sole under the forefoot - it's sort of like a ramp - the sole rises off the forefoot and therefore the foot rocks forward as it transitions from back to front. I hadn't read about this anywhere and was not sure what to expect but figured "what the heck?". I was intrigued by the shoe and liked the wide toe box (I have hobbit-like feet, minus the hair).

I eagerly took my Altra Olympus's on their first (and last run) and for the first time in my memory, contemplated not finishing a run. I ended up putting about 3 horrible miles on the shoe in what I can only describe as a very uncomfortable run. I will say that the Altras are very stable - they have a relatively low CG and a wide stance. I didn't notice any traction slip either. They also fit pretty true to size i I wear a 9.5D running shoe and these were perfect.

That's about where the positive ended.

            My major criticisms are:

            a. Cushioning. If you're looking for cushioning like the Hokas, this isn't the shoe for you. Hokas have a very responsive and dynamic energy return mechanism which actually "gives back". I can only describe the Altras as "energy sponges" - I don't know how else to describe the sensation of fatigue and drain that my legs felt. I think some of it was from the strange sole design. I would equate the cushioning to any other quality industry standard trail shoe, but the energy dampening action of these was horrible.

            b. Lacing System. The laces hold but the pattern of lacing, the lace material, and the lacing supports leave the shoe feeling sloppy. There is too much movement of the foot in the shoe - literature on the Altras discusses this and recommends "getting used to it" - but I'm not sure how you'd do that. As I stated before, I liked the roomy toe box, but this was sort of like running in a bag cinched around my ankles - the shoes fit nicely around the base of my ankes and in the heel, but my feet ended up swimming it he rest of the shoe and I couldn't get the lacing system to take up enough of that slack to make my feet feel secure.

            c. Toe Drop. I mentioned the "rocker motion" of the toe box, this was incredibly distracting and required some modification to my form (I have very good form) which was uncomfortable. I think if I was running up a very steep slope continuously (I did try these on a steep slope) these would be great, but on open surfaces with gentle inclines this feature was a show stopper.

So, I finished my run early at 3 miles (felt like I had run 5) and boxed the Altras right back up and sent them packing. I have been a competitive runner for well over 30 years, and a serious trail runner since the early 1990s. This shoe provided me with the single most uncomfortable running shoe experience of my career, and I say that with zero animosity, drama, or exaggeration. These shoes are simply not what I expected based on my research, or on the advertising. They are most certainly NOT a peer competitor to Hokas. I am going to try the new Hoka Mafate Speed, I am hoping they can get me back in gear.

I suppose these shoes have a niche somewhere and would be very interested to hear from other runners who have used these shoes - specifically, if they like the shoes, and if the shoes met their expectations. Who knows, maybe I got a defective pair with some kind of a sole malfunction?

Comments about Mens Altra Olympus Trail Running Shoe:

My feet kept having issues, when attempting to increase my weekly distance, from anything over 20 miles. I had tried the Brooks Pure Connect (600+ miles), Newton Gravity (300+ miles), and Mizuno Wave Evo Cursoris (150+ miles), all good shoes, and I have liked each one for different reasons.

The Altra Olympus was recommended to me, by a friend, who runs ultra's. In a very short period of time, I finally have my milage averaging 40+ miles a week. They are heavier than I would prefer, but the cushion seams to be doing the trick, allowing me to crank out the miles...

One major plus, these shoes have a large toe box, something that I find is a must have for any distance shoe...(the Brooks and Mizuno, also have larger toe boxes as well).

My only major complaint, is that the foam is painted, and so it shows wear very quickly. Structurally/Functionally this shoe ROCKS!
