When it comes to road shoes, I'm an Asics fan. I've tried different ones over the years from the Kayano (which I hated) to the old standard 1150 (great shoe) and more recently the DS Trainer which had been up until now my favorite. Now comes the Speedstar! Nice and light, hugs the foot, just enough support... Ok, as others reviewed, a little hot but not blisteringly so in my case. The shoe actually forces me to go even more mid- to fore- strike than the DS which I love. If you're looking for a minimalist road shoe... excellent choice.

They are studly; every time I wear them, people compliment me on them. I use them for speed work and they give great traction, but not for long distances. They are very comfortable, but when I wear them for a long time, I start to feel hot spots that precede blisters. The fact that they are seamless makes them cradle and support my foot.

I have used this shoe for a variety of different terrain types in a deployed military setting. Overall, it has help up well compared to the average non trail designed shoes I have used before, but I can not hold that too much against it. Breath-ability is great, but the design of the tongue could be improved to help increase comfort and fit. This is a great lightweight shoe for gym use or running on pavement, otherwise rocks/gravel will eat away at the plastic style arch support on the instep of the shoe.

After 25 years running as a heel striker, as part of my conscious evolution to mid/forefoot striker, I have begun doing my shorter (4-8 mile)runs in Speedstars. I love them! Now my stability shoes feel like there's a chunk under my heel as I land more midfoot with knee slightly flexed versus locked out into extension. I'm transitioning gradually to minimize injury chances, but so far these shoes feel light, fast, and comfy. Road shoes, they're not really set up for trails, as there's no rand between sole and soft fabric.

Just ran 6 miles in these shoes, and I was simply amazed. I'm training for my first marathon and was having a very hard time with heavier shoes like Kayano 17s. I was skeptical about the support these shoes would provide, but I was simply amazed at how responsive and comfortable the shoe was. It felt like the shoes were propelling me with every stride. I run about 35-40 miles each week and looking to increase my mileage in preparation for the Marine Corps Marathon in DC. I was tired of aching from wearing heavy shoes in long runs. I think I have found my shoe. This shoe may not last as long as the Kayano; however I would pay for this shoe over and over again. I will use it for my daily training and races. I personally can't put a price on comfort. The easiest 6 mile run of my life. And this came a day after I ran 11 painful/aching miles in the Kayanos! Great shoe!

This shoe is light as they come and fit like a glove. The lack of weight doesn't effect the shock absorbtion these shoe have. SOOOO comfortable. Great for speed work and the gym/cross training. I love wearing them while doing strength and edurance drills I perform for boxing. I ordered the red and black pair and a week later ordered the Lime and black. Just got them today. Thats how much I love this shoe.

I moved to this shoe from the Speedstar 3 and this is a completely different shoe.
This is the first shoe in a long time that has caused me to blister and it's happening across the top of my right middle toe (and the one next to it). It's because the shoe essentially fits like a mitten more than a shoe so when it flexes across the top of your foot the fabric creases in a weird manner--rubbing my foot. I've never had this happen in any other shoe. I can wear it for shorter runs but there's no way I'd do more than 5-6 miles at a time in these.
I'm giving it a "recommend" because the shoe works at what it's supposed to do but I don't think this is a shoe style/design that is going to be repeated by Asics.

I used this shoe for my 3rd marathon. When you take them out of the box you just feel the urge to run fast. They feel great and as natural as can be. Only did two workouts (11 miler and 7 miler) in these prior to the race ,which I was afraid I'd regret. This was because I've always used wave precisions (mizunos) for marathons and asics cumulus for training, so almost 4 ounces lighter than my usual training shoe and a couple lighter than my race shoe. I had no foot pain which lets me know these shoes have enough support even for those not used to "minimalist" running but at the same time they will make your feet stronger. 10 minute pr, can't just thank the shoes but they held up great and kept my feet warm in the 30 degree temps but stink-free!

I have been running in high school and now college for 5 years, my first pair of running shoes was an earlier version of the speedstar and ive been using them ever sense. Great shoe design, runs very well and i love the colors. I like these shoes so much i order them in bulk so i have extra pairs to throw on as others wear down, so i always have at least 4 or 5 new pairs just laying around.

This is an excellent lite weight (semi-minimalist) show. I was looking for something inbetween my 2110's and Merrell Trail Runners... this shoe hit the mark perfectly. The first time I ran with them I took 30 sec off of my pace, due to lite weight and "inspirational feel". I use these whenever I want to convince myself that I can run faster... I'm hooked.

One thing I did find with this shoe is that I need to tie it differently than my 2110's. Initially it was way too tight, but with a little trial and error I found a way to make them quite comfortable.

I've owned several generations of the Speedstar, upwards of ten pairs. They're a good pair, though I did have an issue where the natural bend in the toe box happened to dig right into the top of my toes. I wore them for an easy 8-miler for my inaugural run with no issues. The problem arose during my first hard track workout. By the end of the run, the two toes next to my big toe on each foot was bloody with significant rubbing. I've endured, but I think it has to do with the integrated lacing system. Still think it's a good shoe.

I am not the typical runner (6'2" - 240lbs) and run in minimal-type shoes. When my last pair of Saucony A2s bit the dust, I reluctantly bought these. LOVE THEM. I run everything but trails in them, including a 1/2 marathon. Mid-foot strikes are gently cushioned w/o there being too much shoe there. Haven't worn them in a triathlon yet, but think they'd be a terrible shoe in transition really tricky to get on in a hurry.

Love this shoe for tempos, intervals, and faster runs. It's my first pair of the Gel Speedstar but they are great. Light and fast but good cushioning. Could be used as a half marathon and marathon race shoe too. I love the bright, lime green color too! The color just makes you wanna go faster too.

Have only run a few short times to get used to these, but plan on using them for races. Like the snug fit, but the material doesn't feel breathable so they may get hot on longer runs.
