I run 4-5 days per week and have run in everything from the big, clunky Nimbus to the Kinvara and all sorts of things in between. The Nimbus is just too much shoe for me. I wanted less shoe with great cushion and feel for running between 10 - 20 mile runs . I love the Kinvara for speed work and racing 10k and 5k's. However I needed an everyday trainer for marathon training that I just loved like the Kinvara. Like I said, I've been through all sorts of brands and shoes looking for that "love" relationship. I found it the day I bought these and hit the road. I can't say enough good things about them. I have about 80 miles on them right now and all 80 have been awesome. If you want a more "minimal/natural" shoe that is still wonderful for long mileage days, then look no further than these. I hope Asics just keeps producing these for years and doesn't mess with them for the sake of making a new model. There is nothing that they could do to make them better. If I could afford it, I would stock up on 6-8 pair right now just in case.
Great shoes...while they lasted!
Loved everything about these shoes...but the outsoles are significantly worn down after only 166 miles. At the point where my heal first contacts the ground, I have completely worn through the black outsole material. (These shoes would likely work better for someone with more of a midfoot strike.) I have found these shoes to be excellent for me (50 years old, 60+ mpw, 5'11", 150 lbs.) on my long tempo and marathon pace runs. Great cushioning for the weight. My feet feel fresh even after very long efforts. Oh well, I'll be shopping for a replacement that has similar qualities and doesn't wear out so quickly. I find that most "performance trainers" last me at least 300 miles, while I usually put 400 to 500 miles on heavier training shoes including the ASICS Cumulus and Nike Moto. I race in the Mizuno Sayonara and I'm finding that they are not wearing down as quickly as the Excel33 3 either.
I use this shoe for training and racing. I am 180lbs and have a hard time finding a lightweight racing type flat that has some good heel support. This shoe also has a nice size toe back for the toes to move in unrestricted. I will be wearing this model until they discontinue it which I hope is never.
The best shoe I've had
Just about the time I had given up on ever finding just the right shoe, I found this pair. They pull off the perfect balance of being lightweight, durable, and super comfortable. I highly recommend them for any endurance runner, from 3 miles to 30 miles.
Michael slightly shoe obsessed
I marathon train in the Nimbus and Cumulus for cushion and support. I have been searching for the right shoe to race in for the past few years and have finally found it. Awesome light weight shoe with the same heal to toe drop as the cushion trainer.
Lite and right for the run.
This is my race day shoe. I train in a heavier Ascis shoe, but the Excel33 3 weighs 2 1/2 ounces less and still cushions adequately on race day. I have no idea how durable it will be, but purchased a second pair to use when they wear out.
