GEL-Kayano® XII: The #1 Shoe at RRS 10 Years in a Row! Runner's World “Editor's Choice Winner”

Runner's World Review: “This year's Kayano weighs two ounces less than last year's - no small feat in a shoe with so much great technology. How? Because of Asics's new lightweight Solyte midsole cushioning material. What's more, our Shoe Lab tests found the midsole to be softer and more resilient. The Kayano is built on a new last (foot form) for an improved fit, though women may need to go down a half-size. Recommended for average-size runners with normal to low arches looking for a well-cushioned, supportive shoe.”

Best for runners with a medium to large build and low to medium arches.

Just an amazing shoe for a runner that needs supports and suffers from shin and knee pain.

Like running on a cloud. On my 3rd pair and disappointed to hear that the Kayano 13 and 14 haven't lived up to the 12 reputation so I am going for the Trance next. Great durability. Does slip a little in the heel if you are planning on cross-training in these.

First time to try ASIC Kayanos. Pretty good shoe for cushioning and stability for 1st 500 miles though I agree with some of the other reviewers that forefoot area needs more cushioning. Knees starting to hurt between 500 to 600 miles - starting to get dead leg feeling so a bit suprised. I am not a big ASIC fan but Kayanos fit me well in the store. This model doesn't seem to be qualified for Stability plus so it is overpriced. Too bad I didn't get the 11s.

Ran in the kayano for years this is the worst one yet broke down fast no stabilty more like a cushion shoe with no cushion after 50 miles.

I've been using Kayano's for the past 8 years. I have to say this model is the worst they've come out with. My knees started hurting after 3 months of infrequent wear. I'm going to try Saucony Hurricanes again.

At 200lbs I absolutely shredded these in 150 miles. Not durable, but light and flexible. Cushioning in ASICS is thin and I prefer the Nike Air Vomero 2's and Mizuno Wave Rider 10, even though the latter is flawed. See my review.

knees ache to often. XII don't handle the shock as well as previous models, nor are they as durable.

good shoe overall, i hate the 13's cause they are stiff, but these are soft and well cushioned.

I ran my first marathon in these shoes. I developed a serious problem with both IT Bands, that I blame mostly to, too quickly adding miles and going to hard. The shoe is very comfortable, light, with great traction. The shoe made long runs more comfortable.

6’2”, 210lb. 75-100mi/month Came off of several incredibly good years (Thank you, ASICS), with 2 pairs of X, then 2 pairs of XI, both in size 14. So I considered XII a no-brainer. Bought two pairs XII in size 14 (and, yes, they did turn out to be larger than X/XII, maybe ¼ to ½ larger, but I always keep the heel laced tight in the pocket) and within 4 weeks (100 miles) I had such a focused case of shin splints in my lower left tibia that both I and my orthopedic MD thought I had developed a stress fracture. MRI proved otherwise. Had to take 5 weeks off to recover, restarted with XI’s, back to normal. I am so disappointed in ASICS. Please return the XI and make truly incremental improvement for the new 14. If you must get radical then give this(XII/XIII) a TOTALLY different name. Honestly, I really, really hate spending the money and time trying to find a new shoe. Keep it incremental and I will gladly shell out $1

Comfortable for the first few miles, until they gave me such bad blisters that I can't currently walk. I broke these shoes in correctly, I bought the right size and was fitted at a running store by people who have never failed me before. There was no way this should have happened with the precautions I always take, so I blame the shoe and the overall design.

I have tried numerous brands but keep coming back to Asics. Sprang for a more expensive model last season and bought the Gel Kayano XII. Not as much cushioning as I wanted, but a swap of the standard insoles for a gel insole made a huge difference. I have close to 500 miles on them now and am ready for a new pair. This has been a very good shoe, and I hope to replace it with something similar.

The Kayano XIIs are one of my all-time favorites. The lighter weight (2oz less) then the previous model makes all the difference. Lighter weight with all the stability and creature comforts of previous models. Nearly perfect for this runner, 5'9" 150. I trust these shoes for any distance. I have never got an injury running in any Kayano shoe!

A update to my post below, I found Kayano X in the outlet store, bought three pairs, and my foot pain went away allmost from the first run. Hope Asics reverses what they did in future releases. I'm on my second pair of the X's and will keep buying the X's until the outlet store runs out.

I have been running for a year, I use to own a pair of nikes but today I just received my Kayanos. Not only do they look sharp, they feel great and they really let my feet breath while im running. Asics shoes are the best and ill never buy another brand again. I just ordered some 2120 trainers. I am gonna wear these for the days I need that extra bit of speed :) GOOD JOB ASICS!

OK. Like the comfort and stability it provides. Could have a little more forefoot cushioning as many of the Asics shoes have been lacking.Bring back the '99 Asics Gel Cumulus as this shoe was about as perfect as you can get!

I'm 6' 208 lbs with a high arch. I broke these shoes in after about 20 mile and they have been flawless. High quality shoe with a high quality cushion. Lighter runners might not appreciate this shoe's ruggedness.

I normally buy only New Balance running shoes, these were my first Asics after recommendations from fellow runners. These turned out to be very fine for mid-distance running - I am 5'10'' and 175 lbs. Normally run 5-6 miles a day, with occasional 8-10 mile runs.

Big disappointment. I have worn Kayano IX's and X's and loved them. The XII's were not a good shoe for me. I found very little forefoot cushioning and got pain on my metatarsal heads after about 2 miles. Not a good update for the Kayanos in my opinion.

Went 4 miles in these today right out of the box. Didn't feel any different than my old 2100's, which in turn didn't feel any different than my old 1100's. Nice shoe but worth the extra cost? RRS suggests a full size up. I went a half size up and any more would have been way too much for me.

Second pair of Asics I have owned. I hated the first pair and swore never to wear this brand again. Well, life is full of second chances and I gave the Kayanos a shot after getting a free pair. They are the best running shoes I have ever owned. I'm on my second pair, and I'm still loving them. I tell people it's like running on pillows. Great heel and forefoot cushioning also relatively light.

I'm relatively new to running but these are my second pair of ASICS, first Kayanos. I'm a larger runner too (5'11, 215) but the shoes have worked out well for me, plenty of cushion yet they feel light on my feet.

Too bad Asics didn't leave well enough alone. I wore dozens of the old Kayano's (6+ pairs/year) with never a problem. Within two weeks in the XII I have significant foot pains. I guess I will try the MC+

I'm big, 6'4" 205lb, run 30+ mi/wk. I wear 14 shoes and bought these size 15. I have 200+ miles on them. Fairly comfortable over shorter, under 10 mi. distances. A bit too narrow in the toe box for longer distances. Eats the outside toes. Fairly soft ride and OK fit if you have a medium forefoot and narrow heel like me. IMHO, the Kayano XI's were better.

Mon, November 27,2006:
Because of the recommendations by RRS, I decided I would try these out. I have been running in Asics 2100s for almost a couple years and really like them but RRS says I should be in a Stability + shoe because of my weight(180# and 6'). I tried on a pair and did not like the uncomfortable feeling in my heels compared to the 2110 I was also thinking about and trying on at the time. The 2110 felt better on my foot, especially at the rear. The forefoot felt fine. I continued with my purchase of the Kayano XII (they were only $75 new, but not at RRS, sorry). Today I ran about 8 miles in them and they felt good, but again my heels are a little sore. I also don't think that they slow pronation at all (I have a very slight pronation issue but consider my self neutral). Overall, the shoes work great, except for a little narrowness in the heel, but I think this will be my last pair and stick with the 2000 series which cost a little less.

Perfect amount of stabilty and cushioning for me. They feel light and have some zip. They have been great on both road and trail. They seem to run a bit large and I had to go down 1/2 size from what I normally wear in Asics.

Last Kayano for me was IX, which was too harsh and tight. The XII is (much) lighter, softer, and roomier, with a less prominent arch and slightly narrower tread. Needed for marathon training, forefoot cushioning is great and a huge upgrade on my Adrenalines.

I'm a large frame runner (6'3", 230lbs) and I've run 30+ miles a week for 4 months with these shoes. I run on trails and road each workout and have no complaints whatsoever. Running on a track the instability people mention is a little more apparent, but nothing alarming.

I just purchased a set of these shoes and they feel great so far. The cushion felt so great I didn't want to take them off after running and walking in them all day. I can't wait to see how they feel a month from now. I highly recommend them.

I have run on Kayano VII - XII and this is the first one I don't like. It seems to have too little absorbtion and a lower arch. Stick with X or XI. The XII is not the Kayano we've come to love.

Fri, October 13,2006:
The Kayano XII's are a nice light shoe and feel fantastic when new. However, it feels as though the cushioning in the forefoot breaks down rather quickly after only 200 miles. The Kayano XI's felt more durable, seemed to have greater conditioning, and appeared more durable even after 400+ miles.

These are my first pair of Asics and I think they are great. They are a bit heavy, so I only use them for longer runs. When I'm done with my long runs, though, my feet feel great. My next pair of running shoes will definitely be a pair of Asics.

Sat, October 07,2006:
Great shoes. I started running a-la the Tarahumara method a few months ago, and pretty much land on the ball of my foot with very little heel contact at all at this point. It has changed nearly everything about my running - including what I look for in a shoe. The Tarahumaras wear those little sandal/thong things, and for runs up to an hour long a pair of Nike Frees work well for me, but beyond that I need something more substantial. I also have a wide foot (3E), weigh in at 170#, and look more like half-back than an endurance athlete. My needs for a long-distance trainer/racer are simple - forefoot cushioning and a wide toebox. The Kayano fills the bill very nicely. Cushy ride, great support, no blisters. My first run fresh out of the box was the last leg of a half-ironman, in which I got third and had a new PR for a half-marathon. No the shoes didn't make the race, but they certainly didn't slow me down. Bottom line - great shoe, espedcially if you land on your forefoot.

Awesome shoe. I didn't run in these previously because they were so heavy. Asics has really lightened up the midsole such that they are now lighter than my GT2110's. Great support and cushioning. Way to go ASICS!

I am a Clydesdale runner and these have been the best shoes that I have found. They may not work for you. They are light and provide enough stability. I have also found that they are durable. They look new after a couple of hundred miles. I did not buy a full size up and I think that they have plenty of room for a 5k or a 13 mile run.
