By Bradley

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

As far as tracking where you're at, how fast your going, and how far you went, this thing is pretty awesome. You can even download a free tool called foreconv that will allow you to lay your route for free over GoogleEarth. Distance out in the open is spot on but I think it starts lagging a little in the trees. I was riding my bike and while in the open it stayed right on with my bike's computer but as soon as I hit some trees it started lagging slightly on the distance and speed. Therefore, I don't know if I would trust this in a heavily wooded area if that's where you like to run. I also don't like the heart rate monitor functionality much. It works great while you're out running or biking, but you can't just turn the GPS off and use the heart rate monitor to track time/calories burned. Therefore, I returned mine and am going back to a polar. I can live without the coolness of map overlays. The polar's are better at keeping track of altitude and the HRM is way better!

I've had the 305 for two years and couldn't be happier with it. Coupled with SportTracks, it has become an invaluable tool to me. Accuracy and reception are very good. Size is not bothersome. I had the Forerunner 201 and traded up to this one--no regrets here. Solid design and quality.

Love hate relationship..... Most of the time I have been very satisfied and it has aided my training. I have completed 4 marathons with it. At 9 months, the chest strap HRM died. It actually started getting very hot on my chest during runs. Garmin replaced it at no cost. Right now I am 1 week past the warranty and the main device will not boot up. I have tried all tips I have seen online. It is dead. Hopefully Garmin support will be so kind a week past warranty. I will find out soon. I've been on hold for about 25 minutes. :)

Awesome product. Performed flawlessly so far in marathons on three continents. I even took it on vacation drives and tours in Europe. Using "MotionBased" (free), I have been downloading google-map (KML) files to send to family members who can then follow my trips virtually. Worked even on a plane ride from Israel to Germany (altitude & speed was spot on with those on plane). Fun, functional, amazing gadget.

I LOVE this product. I have used it for more than three years now. It helped me train for and complete a marathon. I have used it in several different cities and it always finds the satellites within a few minutes and starts tracking just like when I'm at home. I also like how you can customize what is displayed on the different screens. Sometimes I want to track elevation , sometimes I want to see my heading, and you can set it up any way you. The computer download feature is great for storing and tracking your performance over time.

A must have for anyone training for long distance (halfs or marathons). I've used several combinations of HRM and GPS systems...none compare to the 305. Easy to use and all of the data in one package. It helps to combine pace and HRM in one easy display to guide you in guaging your PEL. I was overtraining too often...this helped me find the right balance. I can't recommend this enough for begining to intermediate runners!!!

By Stewart

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

The 305 is awesome. The GPS, Navigation, HRM, & training capabilities of the 305 surpasses all other GPS training units currently on the market. Combined with Motion Based GPS tracking on the web, and Google Earth (KML files), this little wrist watch is in a category of its own. It tracked my Mar 4th, Los Angeles marathon, April 15th, Turino, Italy marathon, and May 19th Great Wall of China marathon with ease. Just remember to let the 305 GPS find itself while you prepare for the run - which is no big deal to me as I leave the 305 while putting on the shoes, packing gels and fluids. While on the plane, it accurately tracked the speed, and altitude to what was being displayed to the passengers in the plane. The wrist watch is a bit clunky at first, if one is not used to wearing Rolex's. But there does not exist a smaller GPS/HRM wrist unit on the market with all the features that the 305 offers. It's the most precious "Toy" I have yet received (and training partner, of course).

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

Overall, a good product in terms of features and ease of use, but I'm not so sure about the knowledge of the folks over at customer support. I've had mine for about a year, and had to send it in for repair because it died in the middle of a triathlon and it won't power back on without being plugged into its power supply. One of the customer service people I talked to said it was probably because I swam in it. We had to have a little argument about that. Supposedly you can swim in it, but that's not what he claimed. I called back later and talked to someone else, and they were much more helpful. Told me it sounded like the battery failed and I'd be able to get it fixed under warranty. I'm still confused about its water-resistant aspects. Seeing as how I'm a triathlete, that's a big concern.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

This watch/HRM/GPS unit is incredible. I have used it extensively over the past 6 months, and don't know how I trained without it. It has so many capabilities, there are too many to list. However, I always know what my performance is before and after every run. I've also used the GPS to find my way back home during some extensive trail running. The only problem I have encountered is needing to order a new elastic band for my HRM. It was starting to smell really bad and the stitching was coming apart. Still $9.95 at Garmin.com had a new one at my doorstep within 3 days. I highly recommend this device.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

I am a casual runner (2 or more miles 3 to 4 days a week). I do not run long distances and I am not training for a specific event. However, I am interested in making sure that I do run at least two miles at least every other day. And, I hate doing the same path over and over again (what's the fun in that). For me, this devise is an outstanding solution. It allows me to go somewhere completely new and still make sure I get the amount of exercise I'm targeting for a particular day. The device dumps out a ton of information. My favorite is the heart rate and elevation information. This device looks (and is) big. However, it's very light. I hardly noticed in until it told me (via an alarm) that I had reached 2 miles. I travel a bit with my job, often internationally. I am very excited that I will be able to keep up my exercise routine on the road without having to map out a running paths in advance. Nothing but good things to say about this item. Very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

Terrible, especially if you're a traveller. The receiver needs to re-locate satellites every time you move over 100+ miles, and mine would take over 10 minutes to find satellites and often lose that signal. I finally returned mine after running a route I mapped out at 8 miles and had the 305 report that I'd run 5.3 miles.

Reasonably accurate on long hikes, runs; even in mountains of Japan; but useless in measuring ascent/descent.
Full utility is when connected to computer, but Garmin Training Center for Mac seems pre-Beta (downloaded in March). Other Mac sources "not quite ready yet" - so Mac users still need notepad, paper maps and pens to keep visual records.
Screens that display data in real time are nice, but wish I could replay data in same visual format on watch or computer. Replay display on watch is hard to see, & lacks full range of data. Computer display also lacks full range of data.
Haven`t tried accessories yet.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

I love my 305 and all its features. Best friend you can have in a race is the virtual training partner.

The unit has worked flawlessly so far. (about 500 miles)
Buttons easy to use, l upgraded from the 201 so the learning curve was mostly easy.
Prior to the Garmin I used the Polar 725, a very good unit ( I still prefer it on the bike because of its cadence capability, but the 305 also has that option, but not spent the money yet)
I've found the Garmin HR device to be much less sensitive power lines, then the Polar. At times my Polar was all over the map, and the resulting HR info for that training session was virtually useless. The Garmin has performed much better in this area.
The only weakspot is the Garmin software. No problems uploading, but the info is not presented all that well, but I am getting use to it. The Polar software is and training log is much better. I strongly suggest using MotionBase with the 305. The calorie info is way off however.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

This has got to be up there as the best training/monitoring tool around. I use it for multi-sport where the auto multi-sport function is excellent and simple to use. No problems with satellite reception in even in dense bush. Not too happy with Garmin's training center program, but Sporttracks (donationware) is superb. Only winge is that it cannot be used for swimming. Sort that out and it would be a 10 star device. BTW, works well with Mac and PC.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

In almost one year of use, I have had few problems. I switched from the Timex system, which worked well, but find the 305 is more accurate and far easier to use. It acquires satellites fast (usually) and almost never loses them. Freeware SportTrack gives awesome reports -- better than Garmin's free site.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

When it works it's the best sports monitor you can get - unfortunately this unit has significant quality problems - I have been through 2 in 4 months and am awaiting a second replacement. Same problem each time - the unit powers down on its own in mid event and will not restart properly. It is not a battery problem - I suspect the power supply. The customer service person told me it might be caused be my sweat - quite a surprise as the unit is supposed to be fully submersible in shallow water ! -
I am training for marathons and duathlons right now so not havng a reliable training aid is frustrating so if the next replacement fails it's back to dead reckoning and a stop watch.

Comments about Garmin Forerunner 305 Monitor:

Completed the Seattle Marathon this past weekend with the 305. It worked like a charm through the 38'F, wind, hail, & rain. (It started snowing an hour after I finished.) Never lost GPS reception when the sky was overhead. As expected, it did lose GPS reception in the freeway tunnels we traversed, but regained GPS reception within seconds after the sky appeared. Personalized, auto-scrolling 12 data screens was very informative during the run. Mapping pace to elevation change to heart rate to actual street location in Seattle for post race analysis was awesome. Very cool gadget.

Living in Los Angeles, I was impressed by how accurate and consistent the GPS was on my routes. I have only one complaint but its significant: the Forerunner 305 makes my wrist hurt. I have small wrists and the antenna part of the watch fit awkwardly over the bony part. Ok for a couple miles, painful after 4, and numb after 8. TEST IT OUT! Can't wait for the next generation Garmin... they get smaller every time.

I've had it almost a year now with very little probelms. I've only lost reception a couple of times (through tunnels). I used to use the polar 625 and had to re-calibrate it every time I changed shoes or batteries. No re-cal with this. Just waiting for the foot pod so I can track with it on the treadmill.

I love my 305 and all its features. Best friend you can have in a race is the virtual training partner. The unit has worked flawlessly so far. (about 500 miles) Buttons easy to use, l upgraded from the 201 so the learning curve was mostly easy. Prior to the Garmin I used the Polar 725, a very good unit ( I still prefer it on the bike because of its cadence capability, but the 305 also has that option, but not spent the money yet) I've found the Garmin HR device to be much less sensitive power lines, then the Polar.

In almost one year of use, I have had few problems. I switched from the Timex system, which worked well, but find the 305 is more accurate and far easier to use. It acquires satellites fast (usually) and almost never loses them. Freeware SportTrack gives awesome reports -- better than Garmin's free site.

Forgot to say that I've never once lost reception over the 700 miles I have logged on this device. Under freeway passes, in dense tree cover, or by semi-tall buildings, or running with packs of runners. Again I just wish it measured cadence/stride length.

Pretty good device. Overall I found it very accurate on ALL my runs. I like how you can view the accuracy during a run and it usually says its between 13 and 25 feet accurate. Which is pretty good I say. I wish it had cadence capabilities though.

- I am training for marathons and duathlons right now so not havng a reliable training aid is frustrating so if the next replacement fails it's back to dead reckoning and a stop watch.

I plugged the 305 into my computer and my computer froze. Upon restart, the USB bus was dead. I replaced the motherboard, added a powered usb hub into the chain and plugged the 305 in again, and it caused blue screens (crashes). Garmin support told me there were compatibility problems with many usb types, and were unapologetic about the problems I experienced. Search the net before you buy this! Major problems.

I Love MY 305...I can't think of a better running partner...I had nothing but trouble with Polar...the 305 has worked great the first time right out of the box...I wish I had it a month or two earlier before my race up Mt.washington...you we not go wrong

I received my Garmin 305 a few days before the OKC marathon. It was easy to learn how to use, worked perfectly, and was very accurate in the marathon. The only time it lost satellite reception was when I took a pit stop in the outhouse!
