Improvement Over the 405

4

I have only run with it a couple times now but found it to be a big improvement over the 405. No more dealing with the quirky bezel and getting frustrated trying to get to the screen I want with sweaty hands. I found the screen to be easier to read and I thought it picked up the satellites quickly. I paired it with a previous Garmin HRM so I was able to save a few bucks there. My only complaint is the charging dock. What a terrible design. The slightest touch and it is no longer charging because it is off the cradle. The charging systems for the 305 and 405 were both much better than this. I could imagine worrying about it charging the night before an early marathon.

Watch has charging issues

2

I ordered this model in May 2013 to replace a failing/failed 405. For the first month or so I had it, it was great, I loved everything. In early July I had my first charging failure, where it was at 0 power after a night on the charger. I thought it was my fault, recharged and went on. A couple weeks later the problems resurfaced. The watch failed to charge, went blank screen, would not take a charge, etc. It came back a couple of times and then the issues recurred. RR told me to call Garmin as I'd had it more than 30 days, so I did. They gave me a bunch of things to try to "fix" it, but again and again it would go dead. Yesterday Garmin agreed to replace it and I am sending it to the factory. I am hoping my replacement will cause me to upgrade my star rating. I am also puzzled because the Garmin info calls my watch "refurbished," but there is nothing on the RR website to indicate it was not a new watch. Don't know about that.

Poor quality on Garmin watches

1

This is my second garmin watch in two years I had the bezel design earlier and the watch kept malfunctioning so I received the 610 last year for Christmas. The charging dock design is poor and I think that's where my issues stem from. The watch will not keep a charge you charge it and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I"m training for a marthon and it begins to have these issues one week prior to the race unfortunately. The band on the watch also keeps coming undone so I had to order a new one. Between myself and my wife this is the fourth garmin we've owned and all, but the older clunky model we used to have have had a lot of issues, which is too bad because they are good watches when they do work. I've emailed and called customer support numerous times and they do what they can, but the problem is poor durability on these watches especially for the price tag. I will not buy Garmin again.

Was great... but not very durable.

I loved this watch. I thought it had a great receiver and picked up the satellites much faster than my older 210 (which my wife still uses). My only complaints are the durability of this watch. The strap only held up for about a year before the rubber tore. It was going to take 4 weeks for a new strap, so I had to modify an old watch band to make it work. Fine, I can live with that. Then this past weekend, it dropped off a ledge from a height of about 2' when I was having to change tops in the middle of a 20 mile run. It shut off and would not turn back on. It's been sitting on the charge for 24+ hours and still nothing. I still don't understand what happened since my old 210 has fallen from waist high when trying to put it on before. Great watch, but must have internal mechanisms made of glass.

Very Reliable

5

I had previously bought the 405 and had many issues with that one. Decided to upgrade and have been VERY happy with this unit. I have had the 610 for about 9 months now. I run roads and trails in the back country and have not had an issue at all. I love that i can check my elevation, mark a course, retrace my steps, or what ever i may need when out exploring a new area. I even wear it when we hit the trail on horses. Its a great little watch, seems fairly durable, and charges easily. I have not had any problems with that. Just make sure you get a conection with the magnets on the back and your good to go. I cant say enough good stuff about this one, Just love it!

Perfect blend of technology, style & use.

5

This is my first GPS watch and I am very happy with the product from Garmin. I think they have built the perfect blend of technology, comfort, style, ease of use, and overall excellence in the Garmin 610. I have used this for the past two month living in Germany. Takes about 15-90 seconds to link up with 8-10 satellites with an accuracy of around 8-15 feet while running. I use this through cities with tall buildings, through forest with tall trees, on air fields with plenty of interference from other types of GPS, radar...ect. Never seems to have a problem. I also use the Garmin Foot pad just in case I loose connection. The watch is not that heavy and fit nicely. Transferring data through the Ant+ USB is a breeze and keeping track on the Garmin website is a nice add-on. All in all I would give this watch the top rating, but as I have nothing to compare to besides the Nike+ shoe sensor, I still think this watch work very well!!

If you are thinking of upgrading from a 405 do it. I have been in a love hate relationship with the 405 because of various reasons that seem to be fixed on the 610. The 610 display is way easier to read especially at night. The touchscreen works great even with sweaty finges and never glitches like the bezel on the 405. The menu system is way easier to get around in. The battery charging clip is magnetic and works better for me than the squeeze clip. It has a vibrate similar to a cell phone and buzzes on your wrist at mile markers. I have run many races with the 405 and while waiting for the start after satelites are found I always worry it would timeout and go to power save. The 610 will buzz to alert you of power save 30 seconds before and every 10 secons following. Touching the screen during this time will reset the power save. Thanks Garmin for the 610, sorry I cursed you over the 405.

Good By Not Good buy !

1

I was using this watch for training and racing, uploading my runs to Garmin Connect and Strava. I used this watch with heart rate and cadence sensors. During my last race, the Phuket Laguna Ironman, the touch screen stopped working. I should point out that I never took this watch in the water, never dropped it or abused it in anyway. Why would I ? I loved this watch. I sent it to Garmin for repair and was told that I would have to pay over $200 ! I told them not to bother because I had since bought the Garmin 210 and found that it does everything that the 610 did except sync wirelessly with my laptop. And the 210 cost half of what I paid for the 610. When my 210 finally goes wrong I will bin it and buy another. I have binned my 610 and will not buy another.

Wonderful GPS watch

5

I've own my 610 for 1 year now and it has been my friend ever since. I can set the screens how I want, it's highly readable du to the size, I just added the bike sensor and it performs as well on the bike as my husbands' garmin Edge 500 - read giving out as much datas. very user friendly. Catch up the GPS signal in a few minutes. Acurate on pace and cool features as the virtual partner. If you wish to imporve your running and target specific workouts THIS IS THE WATCH TO GET. I don't use it however as my daily watch to increase it's life. I also LOVE the fact that it is rechargeable. a BIG 5 STARS.

Great addition to my training.

4

I have been working on improving my run times but the difference from treadmill to outdoors changed everything. My nike+ was not keeping up with my needs and I did not want to have to carry my phone with me all the time. Problem solved after I purchased the 610 and I get so much more information on my run that I have my goals in sight.

not for people with small wrists

4

Great for keeping track of distance/time/training. However, if you have small wrists the band pops out at the connection when taking it off because it is latched so close to it. The touch screen idea sounded great but it does not work real well and not at all if you have sweat on your finger.

Best Running Watch Ever!

5

What a great gadget! Small enough to wear, but loaded with info. Just touch the screen rather than swipe to scroll through screens. Battery charger also easy to hook up, and plenty of info on Garmin Connect.
