Product GAR170 Review

Essential training tool

5

This watch is perfect, for me. It is accurate, easy to use, the display is large and very readable, and the price is right. For my (marathon) training purposes, I've found this watch to be essential. I used to wear my phone on my arm for GPS tracking, but once I switched to a gps watch, I never looked back. It's so much easier to check pace by glancing at your wrist, not to mention less cumbersome. The watch won't win any fashion awards (I only wear it to run), but it's lightweight and and comfortable. I like that the display is limited to just two lines. That's the maximum information I can process on a glance. To see more info, all you need to do is tap a button. The feature I most appreciate it the tie in to Garmin's Connect website. The phone's charger cord can be used to upload your run data to Garmin's site. The website privately stores all of your runs, stats, and courses. You can also use the tools to plan courses for long runs. If you are a data junkie, you'll love having all of your stats in one place. All in all, this is a very well thought out product, totally geared for runners. I use it on every run and it works flawlessly.

Almost perfect!

4

I run with my Garmin and love it for a few reasons: 1. It looks good! It's sporty and reasonably small and I don't look like I have a sun dial on my wrist. 2. It locates me quickly! The wait time for the GPS to kick in is very short. That is soooo much better than the GPS on my phone. 3. It's accurate. 4. It's easy to use. Even I could figure it out! The only con is that the beeps are way too quiet. I use the interval timer and if there is traffic noise or if someone is running with me and talking, I can't hear it. I like to run with music, so I keep one earbud in and then wear the GPS on the wrist that is on the side that I'm not using an earbud, but it's still difficult to hear. I think the sound comes from the back of the unit, so I've loosened it on my arm and that seems to have helped, but it really is aggravating. There is no way to increase the volume, so if you like being notified when you reach a mile or at intervals, then you may find it a bit frustrating. I almost returned it because of this, but decided to suck it up.

Great entry level GPS

5

I didn't want to carry my phone with me when I run, but I needed a GPS to monitor my distance and time/pace (I was using Runkeeper app). So I did some research and decided to get a GPS watch. Since the Forerunner 10 had been recently introduced, and the price point was reasonable, I decided to get it. I'm not a hardcore runner, but I wanted the basic information just so I could start to track my runs and compare them. This watch is easy to use, small (female wrist) and extremely adequate for my needs. Granted you can't track heart rate, but that's not something I wanted (you'll need to go up to another Forerunner for that capability). But having the ability via e Garmin site to compare my stats is great. Uploading data is quick and seamless. And my data can still by uploaded to Runkeeper (via Fit2app) which is linked to Gympact (so I can earn money on my daily runs). Basically this is a great entry level watch and perfect for my needs. Since I'm not a hardcore runner, this watch should last me a while for what I need. And the price (via VIP) was the lowest I found anywhere. I actually was able to use my 20% off coupon. Love Roadrunner Sports!

Good Item for recreational athlete

3

I consider myself an avid athlete as I do at least 3 marathons, some half marathons and a triathlon in a 4-5 month period. I bought this Garmin to replace my Forerunner 201. I have been using the Garmin 10GPS since late June for my daily runs and walks. I like the size and the fact that I have one product for a watch and a GPS, however I have not been able to get over 4 hours of combined training before the Low Battery screen pops on. Will the last during a 3-4 hour run? When that screen is on, all other stats are unavailable for viewing. The screen will only show two stats (pace, distance, time, calories) at a time, so the user needs to decide what they want to see. When the time gets over 60 minutes, the "1" for the hour, goes into a small font and the minutes and seconds stay large. For some users, it may be hard to see which "hour" they are in for running. I think this product would be beneficial for beginner or recreational athletes, but someone more competetive, might want more features.

Great for small wrists

4

Took the F10 out for it's first run today. Replaced a F410. I have a thin wrist with a somewhat prominent wrist bone and the F410 never fit right. Over three years, it rubbed my wrist bone and I now have a permanent small red scar. After enduring multiple marathon training seasons and races, I could not face another season with the F410 and decided to "downgrade" to the F10. I'm glad I did. The F10 fit comfortably and had enough sizing options on the band for my taste. I was sure that I would miss seeing my pace with distance and elapsed time on the display, but I did not miss it at all. In fact, I felt a little bit of freedom from not looking at my wrist every so often to check pace. Set auto-pace for every 1 mile and it seemed right on the money. The F10 picked up the satellite within seconds and seemed to keep perfect mileage compared to the course I set in Garmin Connect. Only early drawback seems to be that there is no option to check remaining battery power other than the battery icon. Have not used long enough to test reliability of the icon and the advertised 5-hour charge.

Very happy!

5

I had previously used applications on smartphones to track my runs, and while they worked well i wanted something i didn't have to carry. Although this is a basic model i am very pleased with it, especially for the price. It actually has more features than i realized. It's easy to use (i did so without reading the manual, although when i did read it i found out about the extra features) My only suggestion would be that the band should be somewhat larger. My wrist measures as a medium for women in body size charts, but there is not much band left. Someone who has a large frame or wants to wear it outside bulky clothes may find the strap too small. It's very easy to upload on the site also. I have uploaded it to garmin and endomondos sites, and it's very straightforward. I've been very happy with the battery life, and having worked in tech support i also have to compliment the design of the charger, which is very sturdy.

Perfect for my needs

5

just received it yesterday and used it right out of the box for a 7 mile track workout. Accuracy very good, not perfect, but likely related to difficulty of GPS tracking on a closed loop. After seven miles it was off by less than 1/16 of a mile by my estimate. Use on my well measured road coarses will be the real test. I like the simplicity, large easy to read display, 1 mile autolap feature (particularly helpful on the track last night), and the fact that you can modify what is displayed on the two displays. I've been using a Polar CS300x with a foot pod, but I like having one unit to work with (plus the GPS accuracy). Seems overall to hit the sweet spot of price, useful features, and simplicity. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon and trying to be disciplined about how I structure my runs, and knowing my pace is critical. Great purchase!

Everything you need

5

So, this is my first GPS monitor. I had been tracking my runs with my phone, which is practical, but not very accurate. First impressions: It is smaller than expected, just a tad bigger than my G-Shock watch. It will pass for a watch and the charge lasts a good while if not tracking. It has been pretty accurate and it acquires the location in under 30 secs, which I think is great compared with my phone. THE BEST THING about the FR10 is that it took me about 10 minutes to figure it out (without a manual). I literally was able to take a short test run within 30 minutes of it hitting my door. AWESOME! Can't speak for reliability, but since it didn't break the bank, I could get another one in a year and not cry about it. Bottom line, you get all you need in a GPS monitor for a steal.

AWESOME!!

5

I am sooo excited about this watch! This is my first GPS watch. I hadn't bought one before, because I have miniscule wrists, and no other watch has been small enough (I have a hard time even buying bracelets because my wrists are so small). Anyway, I had read that this was a good watch for small wrists, and it is! It actually fits me comfortably. And of course it's super accurate. Takes a while to find the signal (longer than my running buddy's Garmin 610), but it's really easy to use, the buttons are self-explanatory, the face is still big enough to quickly view data while running, and you get a lot of great features via Garmin Connect. I HIGHLY recommend this watch if you have small wrists & want a GPS watch (and also if you don't want to spring for the more expensive models).

Great GPS!!

5

I bought this to help train for my next marathon. I needed something to keep me on pace for training, or at least let me know what my pace was when I finished. This thing is awesome! It gives me a good general idea of my pace, and when I'm done, I download onto Garmin Connect and it gives me all the details of overall average pace, and average pace per each mile. My eyes aren't too good anymore so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to read it without glasses, but no worries, it has a really big display and is easily read wile running. Now I don't leave home without it. The virtual pacer is kind of funky. I beeps randomly and I really don't get it. I just periodically look at my pace and adjust accordingly. Love this thing!!

Love this watch.

5

I use this on both long and short runs to track pace and distance. So far it has worked flawlessly and up to 5 hours. It has a large display without being too large a watch. It displays two items at a time and can formatted to show many different combinations to suite your needs/wants. It has an intuitive interface, I was able to pretty much figure out everything without a manual. Auto Stop was responsive and same with Auto Start. The ability to upload your runs to the Garmin web app is great, especially since it is one of the only watches in this price range that does it. Charges quickly. I find it to be a fantastic basic GPS watch. If you want something light, small by most standards, and easy to use look no further.

The Black & Red one

5

I wasnt sure if the black one wud be too big lookn, like most GPS watches, therefore ive never bought one b/c they look too manly! I testd it today in Honolulu area, came in mail 2 days ago. First,it had a problem pickn up satellite, so i took off watch, lifted above head a lil' bit & whoa-la, solid pick-up! Followed instructions, easy as pie, i love it! And b/c the watch is light, size didnt become an issue. I'm not sure why Garmin cant make the black one, the same size like pink & green one. I'm tempted to get the green one, but black is less conspicous than the large white face. I saw the pink & black one in the store & size wasnt that much of difference, so chose black, shows less dirt in the long run. It's also easy to download ur runs, the only drawback w/ watch is the battery, 5hrs max when using GPS feature. Why cant Garmin make their watches partly solar powered?!? What's so cool too is when u make an account online for ur Garmin runs, it shows other routes around ur location that u may want to try.

Super cute and functional!

I am a high school student and run track and cross country. I am going to continue running both in college and wanted a watch that would give me pace splits and distance but didn't look dorky. I've had the watch for a week and have used it for track workouts and 2 track meets. The most I have had to wait for a signal is a 1 minute (in a small Texas town) and the battery lasts longer than I expected. It is a little thick, but it's reliable and super comfortable and I feel like it's very durable, I have hit it against a few doors and walls on accident and there is no damage. I love the color and my running friends have given it tons of compliments, I even wear it to class. I'm excited to see how it does on trail runs!

Amazing Tool for Runners

5

I started building my run distances and was using a GPS app on my iPhone. But as I began running more I wanted to have easy access to my distance and pace and found this awesome watch. It's simple- i didn't want a heart rate watch, all I wanted was distance, time, and pace and it gives just that and is easy to use! If you register the watch online then you can upload your runs and it shows the map as well as the other info. Another feature I like is when you finish a run and save it, the watch will tell you your records, 5k time and 10k time! Pretty cool! Plus it's a nice size for women and guys who don't need a huge watch. I'm sooooo grateful that I made this investment :)

Love this device

5

I bought this watch to replace a Fitbit. i love the Garmin watch because I run everyday wherever I can and it allows me to track my distance and speed/time. I also love how easy it is to change your form of workout. It is much easier to use than the Fitbit, as well as more durable and accurate. There are many devices out there for athletes that cover a variety of readings from heart rate to caloric burning to distance and time. Before you purchase anything figure out what you will use your tracker for, how much money you want to spend, whether or not you want your workout information shared through a social network, and most importantly read the reviews concerning product quality and durability.

Good concept, but 30-day warranty

3

This watch is easy to use, and has all the basic features other than current pace (the description is somewhat deceptive, you do not get "real time" pace, although you can see the time at end of each mile). Even in metropolitan location, has difficulty getting signal in some areas. Also not highly accurate in calculating distance with elevation, but for the price, it would be an excellent value with respect to function of the watch. Unfortunately like other Garmins, the watch band breaks easily and is not user replaceable. To make matters worse the warranty is only 30 days, so I got only very limited use before the band broke; now I'm stuck with returning to Garmin for a costly repair, or trying super glue.

Great Introduction to Quantifying Your Runs

5

I just started getting into 5K races and outdoor running. While I've used digital wrist watches before on high school tracks or stretches of road I've measured with my car's odometer to gauge my results before, spending the money on this was the best investment I've made since buying a good pair of running shoes. The Forerunner 10 is what you should consider if you are a novice to the sport, and want a means to gauge your performance without a lot of bulk or pairing to your expensive, fragile smartphone. This is something I can recharge, strap on, and not worry about it. For more money you can get more features, but for those on a budget or not entirely invested in the notion of running, give this a try.

Excellent GPS watch

5

This watch goes wherever I go. Whether walking or running, I love the accuracy of this watch. Few thing negative, but really minor. The beep could be louder. I've noticed that if the watch is lifted off the wrist slightly, it will be pretty loud, but when right on the skin, it is muted. The band is a little short, even for the large model. It could use a few more holes for adjustment. The display fields need to have available a page that is pace/time. These things are only minor and by no means a deal breaker for me. Excellent watch for the money. I bought one for my wife and she enjoys the use too.

Perfect keeping you on program

4

I have an old Garmin from 10 years ago...very bulky so I was looking for something that was light, easy to use, affordable and I could take on travel. This meets all my requirements. My only "ding" on the product is that I can't get pace and mileage on the same screen and although there are 3 screens you can flip through to get the information (screen 1 has total time and mileage, screen 2 has calories and pace, and screen 3 has actual time) it's just a nuisance on the interval runs. I wish you could get mileage and pace on the same screen. Anyway. Great affordable product. Recommended.

Money Well Spent

4

I just started training for a race and need to track my mileage as well as minutes for a run/walk ratio. I had been using an app on my phone instead of buying one more "gadget". That proved difficult and cumbersome, and I researched and found out that it's not terribly accurate either. I bought this watch, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It was definitely money well spent. It's seamlessly easy, and accurate. The only drawback is that it's sometimes hard to hear the alerts - it's quite often too noisy outside, and it's just not loud enough. If there was a volume control this watch would be perfect!

So Happy with my new Garmin!

5

I love this new garmin! The price, look, and features of this Garmin made it impossible for me to resist. I am so glad that I ordered this (in pink). It is lightweight, stylish, and really easy to use. I have no problems syncing with the satellite and use this on all of my runs. Being able to connect it to my computer to view my running stats, info on elevation, distance traveled, time, etc. are all great features. But, my favorite tool is the pacer- I set the watch to my half marathon race pace and love that it beeps at me when I am slower or faster than my pace (shown in writing on the watch) and then again when I get back on pace. The perfect tool for training for races.

Great watch- has all the basics

4

My son is using this for cross country summer camp. It's his first running watch and he doesn't have a point of comparison. It's simple to use, good GPS connection and great at providing basic information previously not available with no watch. The only cautions are that it needs to be charged nightly and while running he isn't able to see his current total distance. We'll double check the setting options just in case it's set incorrectly. We went with Garmin paying a slightly higher price than some competitors to get the GPS option and the reliability of Garmin.

Overall a very good watch

4

I bought this for my wife, who has recently gotten into running. She had been borrowing my Garmin 305, so I thought a new GPS watch would make a great Mother's Day gift. It's a lot smaller than my 305, which is perfect for her. The colour selection was a nice feature as well. It works great out of the box, and measures distance and pace exactly as my 305 does. The only real complaint I have is that the run/walk feature is limited to 10 minute intervals, which defeats the purpose of the feature when the training group is running 18&2's. All in all, a great watch, though.

Great!

5

I purchased this as a first time Garmin watch user. I liked the size since it wasn't much larger than regular sports Timex watch I have been using to keep track of my time. (I have a 6 1/2' wrist.) It was fairly easy to follow directions and I really enjoy downloading my exercise to the Garmin Connect website. It has been really helpful as my friends and I are training for a half marathon. Seeing the mileage add up is great incentive to keep going especially on familiar routes (walking dog, jogging) that I was just guessing at the mileage. Calorie count at the end is an added bonus! :)

Broken wristband renders watch useless

1

I was quite happy with the watch's functionality. As others note, the GPS connection isn't the fastest one available, but it got and help a connection for me 99% of the time including in very remote areas. I found distance accuracy to be quite good, in agreement with other devices I used. But the wristband broke off from the watchhead - immediately after the warranty expired. It can't be fixed, so it's now useless. It's too expensive a piece to have this short a shelf life. I've seen that this is a common problem from other reviews here and on other sites. I'm very disappointed in Garmin and won't be buying another.

Good but only displays 2 features @ once

4

I have been using an old Garmin watch to run in (the Forerunner 110) for many years and just switched to the Forerunner 10. The main disadvantage to this new watch is that it only displays time and distance on the screen at a given moment. To see your pace, you have to click a button on the watch to switch to a new screen. The old Garmin showed time, distance and pace all at once. Because I am training for a marathon, it is bothersome having to reach over with my other hand to while I'm running and switch screens in order to check my pace. Otherwise, the watch seems to be working well.

Slow to Connect

3

The compact size and features are nice. However, it takes a long time for mine to find a signal and I live in the suburbs. I leave from my house every morning and sometimes it takes 3 or 4 minutes to find a signal! Seems inordinately long. In the 2 months I've been using it, it's found a signal quickly maybe 2 or 3 times. I didn't count on having to stand in the cold for minutes waiting for it to find a signal...I also wish there was a simple chrono option for the times it cannot find a signal; at least I could time my run in those cases. I was very excited to finally purchase this and am a little disappointed.

Best Watch I've Ever Used

5

I run, like at least 5-6 days a week if its a good week for me. I used to run with the Garmin Forerunner 205 (bulky!!!) but my parents finally bought me the FR 10 and it changed everything! I love the accuracy, the pace it gives me, and just how simple it is. I do interval work and speed work, and this does great for that. I also do a lot of distance running, and this watch has great battery for it. I just highly recommend this watch to runner.

Great first-time GPS watch

4

I had been borrowing my husband's Garmin Forerunner 405 once in a while just to gauge my distance on my longer runs. However, it was very large and heavy on my 6-inch wrist and would bounce around. The Forerunner 10 is a perfect fit for me and does everything I want in a GPS. This GPS is just as accurate on the distance as my husbands 405. The only downside I see is that you must connect by USB to a computer to charge the battery, and can't charge by plugging into a wall outlet.

Great watch!

4

Was a great choice for me. Was using an older bulky version. Didn't need fancy features. It is very accurate. The only thing I don't like is I wish pace & distance were displayed on the same screen. It is easy to toggle through though. Also, if I have my pace range set, I can keep the display on distance & the watch beeps if I'm not on pace. I can even hear it over my music. Meets my needs perfectly. The display is the ONLY reason I gave 4 stars. Otherwise, another great garmin product
