If you are over 40, you absolutely must try these shoes. Note that the Mafate is the widest of the Hoka line, so if your foot is more narrow, you'd do better with the Bondi model. These do run wide, but I like a roomy toe box, and the Mafates fit the bill.
There's a reason that so many ultra marathoners swear by these shoes--it's because they work. Concerns about fashion became irrelevant the first time I ran in them. No shin splints. No calf pain. No knee or lower back pain. No pain at all. I feel like I am running on air.
Though the shoe looks like it would be heavy, it's shockingly light. I like strong arch support, so I put a pair of Superfeet insoles in mine, but most people won't need it. If you do require orthotics, the stock insole slips right out.
These buck current fads, but they are wonderful shoes. If they fit properly, they are not remotely sloppy or unsupportive--just the opposite. I am so glad I took the risk and tried them. They've changed my whole attitude about training.
Famous, but not for me
These shoes are so popular among my friends. We are avid trail runners. They do cushion your impact but at too high a price for me. I felt like I was running in clown shoes. I understand the technology is designed to encourage a mid-foot strike, but it just felt like a solid slap down to me. While the shoe did not slip on the rocky terrain, it wasn't deft enough due to the thick layer of cushion. I like to be able to specifically land on my toe, or heel, or even mid-foot sometimes based on the terrain that lays before me. I felt I could not do that with this shoe, it was clumsy for me. I also found my ankle rolling more than I could tolerate. Glad I tried them but happy to be back in my Brooks Cascadia.

You can't tighten the shoe laces that come with the shoes very tight. You included a spare set of laces with the shoes, but i had to use a pair of pliers to get the bigger laces through the very small holes in the shoes. The ends of the new laces are now distroyed.
Sloppy and unsupportive
The idea of these shoes is awesome and maybe if they fit me better I would've loved them. I bought my usual size (bigger than street shoes) but these were sloppy. I have some PF -- one of the reasons I chose them -- and these are cushy but the arch support was inadequate. I returned them.
Hokas run wider than traditional runners
All Hoka shoes run wide, and this is no exception. Max Cushioning though!
