The curious converted!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

I'm 48, 5' 11" and about 190 (a good 20 lbs over my ideal running weight). I run about 25 to 35 km per week and mix in a lot of mountain biking, skiing and kiking depending on the season. Given that I'm not a distance runner, I never really considered Hoka. Add to that the funky look of this shoe line and there really wasn't much reason for a second look.
A friend of mine then mentioned that he was running in them and liked them and that the company offered a 30 day guarantee trial period. So I checked out the shoes and did a bit of reading. Frankly I was a little surprised. I had been running primarily on very lightweight neutral shoes like the Asics Gel Lyte 33. Because of a lot of lingering joint problems/pain and the effects of age slowly wearing down my body, I had trained myself to run more as a mid-foot/forefoot striker and moved to a minimalist shoe. Seemed counterintuitive at first, but it really helped reduce the impact on my joints. Because of that I was really skeptical of the Hoka maximum padding concept, but my friend had mentioned that the biggest difference he felt with the change to Hokas was fresher legs and this was something that held great appeal to me as with every year my legs were turning slowly to cement on my runs!
Specific to the shoe, I have been really pleasently surprised. They're literally within tenths of an ounce of my minimalist shoes and have a 2mm drop. So far so good. I was also really concerned that the thick cusioning was going to feel really odd and awkward. This has probably been the most significant surprise and benefit--while very heavily cushioned, the cushioning is actually quite firm and very stable. I was thinking these might feel like running on platform shoes or memory foam. Neither is the case. The cushioning is actually firm and responsive. And the run feels very much like what I am used to. There was no adjustment period whatsoever. It felt natural right out of the gate.
Benefits: While I've only been running on these for about 3 weeks, I do have to admit, I'm a convert. You could look at these as shoes only for Ultra-marathoners, but that would be a mistake. Do I need all that cushioning? I don't know. But it sure feels good. It's not night and day from the minimalist shoes, but if I had to put a number to it, I would estimate that my legs feel 20% better. I'm not a 20-year old overnight, but I can really feel the difference. It's tangible.
Long story short: If you're curious, give them a go. Running shoes are very personal. Maybe these work for you, maybe they don't. But don't skip over them because they look odd or you think they'll feel odd. They won't. It's worth a 30-day test drive!

Wow! This shoe is amazing. I own the bondi 3 and the Stinson Tarmac and I love them, but the huaka is an a different league. All the cushioning you expect from Hoka, but this shoe is super light and super comfortable. The toe box must have been make a little bigger in this model and it makes a huge difference in comfort. I ran 16 miles, right out of the box and they are now my favorite shoe by a huge margin.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

I am 39yo 5'8" 175 (about 15 lbs over race weight) I have had two sets of Huakas and will continue to purchase them over and over again. I have dropped 30 lbs so far training for Ironman 70.3 events. My first pair of Huakas had about 60 miles on them before the upper clear banding strips started to come apart from the material. This was disappointing to me but didn't really affect the fit form or function of the shoe for me. I now have retired my first pair with well over 400 miles (pic #1) on them from both road and off road conditions.

I'm on my second pair of Huakas now and just finished my first 70.3 event and have to say I'm super happy I have them. I currently have 70.5 miles on these shoes and they seem to be holding up much better than my first pair (pic #2).

      Pros
Shoes are light airy and generally keep my feet cool in hot conditions.
The lightweight mess on the upper really allows for good ventilation and breathability.
The quick zip shoelace tightening system works well for me.
The soles of the shoe seem to hold up well to with both paved roads and gravel road running.

      Con
Shoe does not allow for drainage in wet conditions and thus will trap water in the shoe causing an increase chance of blisters. (suggest placing a few holes in the toe area allowing for drainage)
The toe box seems to be a bit narrow (a few mm for my foot) for the average person.
The extra tongue material inside the shoe tends to bunch or fold over if the shoe is not put on carefully causing some discomfort on the top of the foot (this is easily corrected while putting the shoe on).

All in all I give this shoe a 4 out of 5 stars. Hoka one one has a great shoe here but requires some tweaks to make it a 5 star shoe for me.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

Just picked up a pair of Huakas after falling in love with the Cliftons and they've now become my go-to trail shoe. Have run a good 60 miles in these on road, dry single track and muddy terrain, and have loved every minute of it. Will be running the 100 Mile Flagstaff to Grand Canyon on a relay team this month and am looking forward to lacing up with the Huaka.

      By RV

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

Took the Huaka out for a short run but liked them so much I just kept running. Although it doesn't have the same cushioning as my trusty Bondi, it's a fast shoe that really responds well to all types of terrain. The fabric is flexible and allows your toes to really spread out. Although I'm not sure it's going to be my go to shoe for 50milers, I expect to use these shoes a lot. Great job HOKA!

Kind of expensive, Hoka should make it more affordable to the Marathon/Ultra-runner community. Not everyone can afford a 150+ shoes. (Some discounts would be great, seriously...)

Fantastic shoe. I can run in them, walk in them, and can even race walk in them. Probably the top shoe that I've owned over 30 years of running. Light, VERY STABLE, soft (but not too soft), low drop, versatile. An innovation for Hoka shoes and for running shoes overall. My congratulations to the designers. They did a FANTASTIC job. Don't stop manufacturing this shoe!!

I'm a big fan of the Clifton and Clifton 2. I run 70-80 miles during marathon training and tend to stay in long distance training throughout the year-3 marathons and 4-5 half marathons. I just ran 13 miles in it the other day. Its got a lower to ground feeling and is very cushioned. I'm flat foot so it gives some stability as well. It is responsive and has good energy return. I am going to use it for Philly Marathon hoping to set a PR with them. I might get another pair its too bad that I heard it is being discontinued. Hopefully Hoka replaces it with another shoe!! 11-22-15 Philly Marathon with my Huakas=Time to Fly! Happy Running! : )

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

Recently using Hokas. Have a pair of Cliftons and most recently a pair of Huakas. Prefer the slightly firmer ride of the Huakas. 5 years of Newtons, which I continue to use, but believe that the cushioning of the Hokas will aid in long term running. At age 64, longevity is becoming more important. So far, as I adjust to the Hokas, I am quite pleased!

The only concern has to do with the slight slipping of the inner soles. Less so with the ortholite insoles.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

The Huaka replaces my Stinson Tarmac that Hoka in their infinite wisdom chose to change so that I couldn't wear the new models, Stinson Lite or 3. I really needed the cushioning of the Stinson originally to rehab a stress fracture, but now that I'm running comfortably the less cushioned Huaka is fine. Huaka returns energy from each stride where Stinson Tarmac pretty much absorbed it into the sole. Huaka is stable, light, comfortable, has entirely adequate space in the toe box and throughout the shoe with the blue insert alone, laces very nicely now that I have replaced the useless laces that came with the shoe, cut them off and use regular laces that Huaka generously provided when I asked. My foot is 9.5D, it's a wide D but not E, so I was concerned when I read that the Huaka might be narrower and have a smaller toe box, but the size 10 shoe fits as well as the Stinson Tarmac did, has a different feel but provides fully adequate space. I have had the shoe now for a month, like the shoe, I run four miles three days per week, on blacktop and concrete sidewalk, up and down hills and along flats, and the shoe works very well for me. The 2mm drop is as close to perfect as I could want, allowing forefoot, midfoot and heel strikes as the terrain or my legs choose for me, and the heel strike coming down a hill is well cushioned, not jarring. The sole appears to be wearing quickly, but that was the case with the Stinson, and they still cushioned well and had adequate traction even after they looked really used, so I'm optimistic that I'll get my miles from this shoe, as well. I'm 172cm, 69kg, 64 years old and have been running since 1993. Now that I've found the Huaka I hope Hoka continues to produce it into the future.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

Rehab of stress fracture was not progressing until I discovered Stinson Tarmacs for walking, and after that my tibia head healed quickly, so I started running in them. Great shoes, recommend them to anybody rehabbing a stress fracture, really stable, extremely comfortable, balanced, a shoe that really keeps the road from hurting...oh, wait, you can't buy them anymore because Hoka in their infinite wisdom decided to stop making them in favor of a couple of other shoes that simply do not measure up. How sad. After looking through the entire line I found Cliftons but their heel was too sloppy, and Huaka, which fits well and works well, so I guess things are back to good. The Stinson Tarmac had a lot more cushioning, but it also left me feeling like I was dragging, working too hard, not getting back what I was putting into the road in terms of collision and rebound from each stride, but especially on the downhill they were absolutely the best. Huaka have noticeably less cushioning, but they are lighter, more stable, in comparison provide a lot more energy return in each stride so I feel stronger throughout the run, and so far the cushioning has been adequate. They are described on the website as narrow, but I have a D+ width and Huaka works fine for me. Only had these for a week, four miles per run, so I have no idea about wear, durability, quality of workmanship. Out of the box they fit, were comfortable without break in, and, I hope, continue to be a source of pleasure for hundreds of miles. Service from Hoka has been very good, no complaints there at all, easy people to deal with so far.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

I got a gift certificate to a show store for the holidays last year and when I went into the store I told the sales person about my shin issues. he immediately showed me the HOKA shoe. My first reaction was a hesitant one as I saw a big, bulky shoe with huge soles. The sales rep talked me into the sale and I gave them a try. I was doing the Disney Goofy race in 3 weeks (39 miles in 2 days) and I needed to try something to help my shins. Well, it seemed to work. Although it didn't cure anything in such a short time, it definitely helped my shins from getting worse. I am currently training for a half ironman and I've been training in those shoes and bought a second pair online of the exact same kind. I love the feel and it definitely takes stress off my legs and shins. The only downside of the ones I just bought is that the tongue cuts into my ankle and on long runs it become rather bothersome.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

The Huaka is a great all around shoe. It is durable enough to take on aggressive trails, while still fast enough for me to use in speed work. The upper is much more flexible and comfortable than my previous pair of Hokas (Bondi 3) and seems a bit more responsive as well. My only complaint with Hoka shoes still remains to be their width. My feet are on the wider side and the Huaka still is a bit narrow for my feet, although Hoka seems to be progressing to shoes that better fit my foot shape. Overall, a great shoe that has helped my transition from heel-strike to forefoot-strike. This change in form helped me to overcome knee injuries that made even a half mile run painful; now I am training for my 3rd marathon! Hoka shoes are perfect for anyone looking to transition from heel-striking to forefoot-striking, since they are equipped with forgiving maximum cushioning as well as the signature meta-rocker technology. Once the upper becomes more comfortable, Hokas will definitely be my go-to brand for running shoes!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

I have a pair of Hokas that I love. I was running my first ever 10k and wanted a new pair. The brightness of the shoe really caught my eye and knew I would stand out on my night time run. ( down the Las Vegas strip at night). They were perfect, so far they are living up to my expectation.
1 con--the tongue of the shoe is very long and feels weird against my ankle area ( strange I know) I have to fold the tongue down but not a huge deal.
                      I recommend!!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

Just received my second pair of Huakas, after having also had a pair of Stinson Evos. The Huaka is extremely light for a shoe with this much cushioning - my first time running in them after the Stinson Evo felt almost like I was barefoot. In fact, I was worried I had bought the wrong shoe, and that because I have had foot problems in the past that these would not give me enough support. However, I can attest to the fact that for the first time in several years of running and marathon training, I've not suffered any injury this year. I attest it to how these shoes help my form, absorb the shock, and ease the glide. Looking forward to wearing Huakas once again as I cross the finish line at the NYC Marathon on November 1!

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

As an ex athlete still weighing 230 lbs, I have never been a strong runner. As I get older (42 years of age) I am seeing the benefits of running more and more vs. weight training and other exercises.

I bought the Hoka One One Hauka at the request of a friend and am absolutely in love with them. I have never ran so well, so far, and for such good times. I always have had issues with my hamstring, knees, and Achilles when running consistently. I have had no issues at all since switching to Hoka and just ordered my second pair today. I am running more than ever and plan to keep doing so for as long as I can. I will never switch from Hoka shoes. That is for sure.

If you are unsure about running due to your size, weight, or injuries don't give up! Get a pair of Hoka's and get out there. The difference cannot be described, you have to see for yourself.

Comments about Mens Hoka One One Huaka Running Shoe:

I'm not sure that the shoe is to blame for this, but the insert in my right shoe has begun to slide backward towards my heel several miles into each run. It's a bit annoying as it feels like I'm toeing a ledge for the latter half of a run. Again, this could be something I'm doing involuntarily because it's my dominant foot, or it could be the shoe, who knows. Other than that, the shoe is comfortable, very lightweight and as minimal as a Hoka can be, if that's what you're looking for. I've only put about 50 miles on them so far, so I can't really speak to durability at this point.
