Very Light & Amazing Cushioning

By Kevin

Pros

  • Top Notch Cushining

Cons

Best Uses

I am 6'2, 200 lbs. I need a max cushioning shoe to protect my legs. I have used Asics Nimbus, Hoka Bondi 3, and the Hoka Cliftons. The Bondi and Cliftons have a LOT more cushioning than the Nimbus. I just wish the Cliftons were more durable and had a more comfortable tongue. Advice to Hoka, even if it makes the shoe 1 oz heavier, improve the tongue & durability.

Like I am sure a lot of us around, been trying for years to find the holly grail of running shoes that would fit me best.
Just to put things in perspective: am male, 42, 6ft4, 185lbs, running 20-25miles/week, racing on everything from 5miles to half marathons (01:50), mainly roads, little trails.
Am always curious to try out new things, and have fairly sensitive joints and back, not getting any better with age, so always been looking for lightweight but good cushioning.
Below a quick summary of my quest to the perfect shoe for the past 2 years, starting from worse to best:
      - Nike Zoom Elite, Aasics Nimbus, Saucony Triumph: good cushioning, but heavy and the "slippers" feeling I do not like. Aasics and Saucony on the expensive side as well (cheap side for the Nike). Would give them 2 stars
      - Nike Free 5.0: best look around, extremely snug fit, super lightweight, ideal to run on trade mills, but too little cushioning for me to consider running on the road. Would give them 3 stars. Bought 2 pairs of those (as I said, great for training on trade mills). Very cheap after the discounts.
      - ON Clouds Surfers: interesting technology, great cushioning, a bit on the heavy side. Quite responsive (as opposed to first category above). Very durable as well. Would give them 4 stars. Bought 2 pairs of those. Would probably go for the Cloud Surfers model if I wanted something a bit lighter. a bit on the expensive side
      - Adidas Ultra Boost: one of my current running shoes. Was promised something revolutionary, ...but not really. Great cushioning, very snug fit and responsive, but on the heavy side. 4 stars. Super expensive.
      - Nike Lunar Flyknit: was my best running shoes before I discovered the Hooka Clifon. Still have a pair of those: super light, super snug (almost too much, top of one of my toes rubbing against the fabrics ending up in pain), responsive and great cushioning. Was a 5 stars to me until I discovered the below. Had 3 pairs of those. Very cheap after the discounts. Lasting average at best (the cushioning effect goes away too quick to my linking).
      - Clifton Hooka: bar none the best shoes I have ever run in: reasonably snug, super light, and a cushioning out of this World: the "walk on clouds" feeling. Cheap as well. I am on my 3rd pair of those.
      Hope that helps. Happy miles.

The shoes are awesome. Some people have posted that there is not a lot of room in the shoe, I say that's Ludacris. I run about 50-60 miles a week and to me the Hoka one one cliftons are perfect. The shoes look heavy, but looks are deceiving. I have convinced five other Soldiers into buying the same shoes and they love them as much as I do. I have written HOKA and asked if they can make a combat boot because of the comfort of the shoe. I highly recommend this shoe to any runner or non-runner alike.

I'm on 3rd/4th pair of Cliftons. Have about 300 miles on each. Love the shoes except he rubber near and under the heel gets loose and peels off.....or I have to cut it off. So I have almost no rubber in the back of the shoe...just the white/foamy stuff under the black hard rubber that has peeled off. The hard rubber in the front has stayed put luckily. I continue to run on them as the cushioning is great.

I've only run in the shoes a few times but already like them a lot. The cushioning is great and the shoe is surprising light. I expected the shoes to feel slow because of the cushioning and size but it's quite the opposite as they feel just as fast as my 10k racing shoes. I have narrower feet so the upper feels a little too roomy at first but it's not so noticeable during a run. Overall, pleasantly surprised with how much I like these shoes.

Training for Boston, long runs, recovery runs and almost temped to use them for the marathon. They are light enough and will get you to the end of super long runs, in much better shape than any other shoe I've ever worn. The next day, you feel like running again (after a super long run). My goto shoe for most of my training. I now own 5 pair, that's how much I like them!!

I've trained on many, many different shoes over the years, but the HOKA Clifton is truly remarkable. I might even call it a breakthrough. It's startlingly lightweight, extremely protective and stable, and its rocker sole has helped me to increase my turnover pace.
I plan to use this as a racing flat in my next marathon.
I literally have not put on a shoe from another brand after running in these. Highly recommended.

I've got a total of 200 miles on two pairs of these. These fit my slightly narrow 11.5 feet like a glove. The cushioning is perfect. I previously was wearing Ghost 6s for short runs and Bondi 3s for longer runs. Everything that didn't work for my feet in the Bondi 3s (fit, breathability) works perfectly in the Cliftons.

I can't say enough about the Hoka Cliftons. They are light, comfortable and most of all easy to run on. They eliminate almost all "impact pain" with their cushioning. They have all but eliminated a knee pain I have battled for a year. I ran a PR half marathon two weeks ago in these shoes. The best part is after the race most of the pain I use to feel is very limited and recovery time is definitely shortened.

Quick update: Fantastic show. Been running in them since mid November. Over 500 miles and the shoe still feels "new". I am impressed. Having run over 81,000 miles since 1976, I can't recall a shoe I have run in that works this well for me. Light weight and super cushioning. Minimal, if any, degradation in the support/ cushioning of the shoe. Amazing! I hope Hoka reps don't read this, they may want to change the formula so the she wears out quicker. Definitely 5+Stars, Who says you can't run 40-50 miles a week in your 70's?

I am a 59yo male, 150lbs, long-time runner. As I aged, my preferred lightweight trainers just didn't seem to provide enough padding, and I frequently had sore knees after a long run. I decided to try these Hokas upon the advice of a friend who runs ultras. So far I am very pleased. I've used them for several 4-6 mile runs and a 12-miler, and the ride is great--like running on air, and they are light-weight too. I also like the two-part insert that permits you to customize the footbed based on arch and foot volume. I tried a couple of different configurations before I settled on the best fit. My only concern, as with any shoe over a hundred bucks, is that they hold up. My ultra friend had significant wear at his strike points...but he runs a gazillion miles a week. I plan to use them for a half-marathon next month. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a more cushioned ride.

Fantastic for long runs. I hope this model remains unchanged until I can add a third and fourth pair to my stable.

Unbelievably light (much lighter than the Rapa Nui 2 that I started on).

Soles tend to pick up a fair amount of discoloration depending on the surface (I run red tracks, blue tracks and asphalt, and it picks up the color every time)

This is really good shoe with a major drawback though....it's too narrow. I've had to really loosen the laces to keep my foot from going numb. However, the cushioning is outstanding! Wish Hoka would make their shoes wider. Plus, it be nice if they'd add a more padded tongue.

                                                        Best Uses

I am a 72 yr. old male, medium build. I use the shoe for walking, treadmill, elliptical machines, etc. I no longer run.

I started with the Bondi S2 because of Hoka's rep for cushioning. I like them very much.

Recently I bought the Clifton and notice 2 differences: The Clifton is considerably lighter. I like that. The Bondi toe box is more roomy. I have a thumb width of space in front of my big toe in both shoes, but my toes are a little cramped in the Clifton.

The Clifton is more like a mainstream brand and remind me of my Nike Pegasus'. If you like the chunky, substantial feel of Hokas, you may want to avoid the Clifton.

I like both Hokas but the Clifton with the Bondi toe box would be a near-perfect shoe.

This shoe has an enormous amount of cushioning with minimal weight. I'm about to turn 50 and weigh 150 lbs. I run 2 - 3 marathons a year with shorter races mixed in during the year. These shoes have really made a difference in joint pain. I was running in Brooks PureFlow and PureConnect prior to running in the Hokas. I'm now on my second pair and rotate them between runs. Some of my fellow runners call them my "old man" shoes, but looks aren't everything!

I have a little plantar fascia problem but I think I caught it on the early side. Plenty of stretching and the Clifton's are helping. I run 5k, 8k and 10k. I run about 12 miles per week. I liked them so much I bought a pair for my daughter. She has some knee problems so I think this will help. They're comfortable right out of the box. We ran a 10k on Thanksgiving and we both agreed they were great. My legs felt fine the next day.

I am a heavy runner at roughly 6 feet tall and 200 pounds who has experienced some knee pain while training for and running a half marathon. I have several full and half marathons under my belt, but those all took place about 30 pounds ago, so running in less cushioned shoes ended in a good deal of pain. I took a few weeks off after the race and went back to RR to look for something more protective, but with the caveat of still wanting something light.

I tried several different shoes and ultimately landed on the Clifton for several reasons.

                                                                  1. The shoe is tremendously cushioned and has a great feel as you move through your stride. The foot sits down into the shoe a bit, so the very large outsole is a bit deceiving. Despite all the protection in the shoe I find myself actually being more encouraged to achieve a midfoot to forefoot strike as opposed to heel striking.

                                                                  2. The weight is otherworldly...in a good way. Given the level of cushioning and protection it mind blowing to pick them up. It seriously feels as though you are picking up a pair of socks.

                                                                  3. The fit takes a little getting used to, but ultimately is great. The toe box has the potential to be on the tight side, and I've found that putting my full weight on my foot when lacing them up is best to let my toes spread naturally without the shoe being too loose.

That said, there are a couple of notable negatives that keep this shoe from being a perfect 5 stars.

                                                                  1. The tongue of the shoe is very thin and stays out of the way, but this does come at the cost of some protection from the laces. Look out for hot spots if you tie your shoes up tightly. The top of the tongue also tends to bunch up quite a bit.

                                                                  2. I question the durability of the sole. After only a few runs I am already noticing wear marks. There is almost no rubber on the bottom of the shoe which does help a lot with the weight, but comes at a price.

                                                                  3. The styling is ugly. There is no way around it, the shoe looks terrible. Ultimately the tremendous feel and fit more than compensates, but better design would go a long way.

Ultimately this is a tremendous shoe, but there are a couple of minor things that need tweaking to be absolutely perfect. Regardless of the small tweaks needed, this is absolutely a shoe that should be considered for anybody who wants cushion without sacrificing speed.

                                                                  • Was this a gift?:

I have a need for increased cushioning as I am in my late 50's and have been running since 1973. This shoe is comfortable, stable, light, responsive and cushioned extremely well. I've only had them for about 2 weeks but they required zero 'getting used to days.'. I now run low mileages at about 25-35 miles per week.
