I finally got around to trying out Hoka's after I got this model on sale. I completely agree with may others who have rated Hoka's. Outstanding cushioning, better-than-expected stability, good fit. I am already seeing a decrease in foot pain in my right foot after a little over a weeks' wear. I like this shoe enough that I immediately bought the Tor Summit WP to wear at work (it is just casual enough for the office).

These shoes aren't as heavy as some reviewers make them sound. I've always worn shoes on the heaver side (Asics Gel Kayano and Nimbus, primarily), so I guess I just don't mind too much. Bottom line: I see myself wearing Hoka's for a long time to come.

Cushioning only slightly less than Stinson, but more stable in technical terrain. Sheds mud well and gets good traction. A tad wide for my narrow foot, but thick socks helped. I noticed wear at the big toe joint area on the medial side halfway through the summer on both shoes, however it didn't affect performance.

A good shoe overall but a few things to work on

      By Frank

      Pros

      • Comfortable ride
      • Great cushioning

      Cons

      • Lousy Traction On Mud
      • Mesh Wore Out Pretty Fast
      • Narrow in the Toe Box

      Best Uses

      • Great On Downhills
      • Long runs
      • Recovery Runs

I have used the Hokas Mafate speed for 3 months and a half now on all my long runs. (20 to 30 miles one a week) Also used them for my recovery runs and in a couple of trail races. I love the cushioning they provide, above all in the downhills. However, they feel quite narrow in the toebox. I don't have wide feet but I had to remove the insole to give myself a bit more space. The mesh on the inside of my foot also started tearing after 200 miles. For the price paid, it was a bit of a disappointment. I expected these shoes to be a bit more durable.

      Another Winner from HOKA

      By RTKactive

I chose the Mafate Speed as my trail running complement to the HOKA Clifton (which is the best road running shoe I've ever worn).
While the Mafate Speed has many of the attributes that I love about HOKA (e.g., lightweight, very protective, rocker sole, etc.), there was one thing that bothered me: it's built very high under the ankle bone and rubs a bit too much. I'll definitely have to be careful with my sock selection.
Otherwise it's a very durable & capable trail shoe. In fact, I'll probably use these in the mountains instead of hiking boots this summer. I love the tread (just enough; not too much), and the durable reinforcements on the uppers.
HOKA is definitely doing things right!

I am a 4 miler most days. Plan on a half marathon this coming year. This shoe is different. Has a higher cuff causing me to get ankle rub with very low socks. Need to wear above ankle socks. As stated before the heel drop is hard to get used to but is starting to grow on me. My heel sits lower in the shoe than my other shoes. Also has a non flat sole so standing still you tend to rock. Of all the Hokas I think these look the least odd. The colors are pretty much a dead match to Seattle Seahawks colors. Love the shoe so far after five runs and five elliptical workouts.

Four years ago, I suffered from a torn achilles tendon and plantar fasciitis. While recovering, I have tried multiple different shoes to find the one that will keep me running. This shoe has done it. I am back to running without pain and believe this shoe is the reason.

Gave the Hoka Mafate Speed a shot more out of the novelty of running in peewee herman looking shoes. Freakin Love 'em. They are lighter than some of my more traditional trail shoes and are ultra cush on rough terrain. I tend to stay away from heavy cushioned shoes, however these shoes are more responsive than bouncy if that makes any sense. My only criticisms are the metal lace grommets at the top of the tongue- blisters first time out- duct tape solved the prob but for the price I shouldn't have to do anything. Gripy blue sole seems to be wearing quickly. I prob have 80-90 miles on 'em and feel I might only have another 100 before im buying another pair.
