I made the transition to barefoot & minimalist shoes about 2 1/2 years ago. I had ankle surgery last Oct 31 to (hopefully) repair an 8 yr old injury and was cleared to start a prescribed running rehab at the end of March. I've been reluctant to head back to my Merrell Trail Gloves, wanting a little cushion. So, I've been running in a pair of Brooks PureGrits to get that cushion, but I don't find them comfortable and the traction is about as bad as you can imagine. After a very rainy spring, I reluctantly put on the Trail Gloves to get better traction - wow, love those shoes, but still I wanted a little cushion. Enter the Evo Ferus - awesome! As comfortable as the trail gloves, actually much better traction, toe guards work, and that little bit of cushion I was looking for. Just about perfect. I've only got one comment & one sorta complaint - comment: as expected, the natural feel of the trail gloves isn't there; complaint: they let in a bit too much sand. I'll live with it. I'll still bust out the trail gloves when I'm feeling stronger, but these are great. So much better than what I consider the junk of the Pure Grit and I'm seriously considering the Evo Levitas as my next non-trail shoe to replace the Brooks PureConnects (LOVE them even though they led me to the junky Grits). Long time Mizuno runner that got away from the brand after the Mavericks went away and the shoes seemed to get stiffer & stiffer. I'm happily coming back.
Comfortable On- road and Off
I've had this shoe about three weeks and it was perfect right out of the box. I have this in a day-on-day-off rotation with a pair of Nike Free 3.0 V5. I use it for a combination of paved and trail runs. This is far better than the Nikes on the trail and about the same on paved surfaces. Neither are extra cushiony but that is the point of a minimalist shoe. I run in the 25-40 miles a week range and bike between 50 and 60 miles. The total mileage is split between the two shoes, but I prefer the Mizunos right now.
Ordered this shoe from local running store after seeing it here. After I got 'em, I immediately took to the trails. As usual, Mizuno performs! For me, the arch and lift- off is right where I need it as I forefoot striker. It is like a slipper, but don't let it fool ya. It is a workout workhorse. It seemed to handle anything I threw at it, but I think I would leave the mud to something with cleats.
