disclaimer: I hate running, but I do it anyways because it's good cardio outside of mt. biking, swimming, skiing, etc.
I bought these shoes because standard shoes used to give me shinsplints, and the promise of barefoot running is less impact, less pain (note: NOT less strain, less pain). these and the true gloves from Merrell were my first barefoot shoes since they come in 15. the true gloves went back right away- absolute sweat factories, not breathable enough, and no way to do a runner lace. the trail gloves I kept.
these shoes are uber-breathable which I love since I run in them sockless and tend to sweat profusely. these handle it pretty well and clean up in the washing machine nicely.
as expected, there's no real "support", but the arch wraps nicely around your foot, so it's an odd feeling if you're not used to it. I actually like it much more than a regular shoe, the feedback is incredible.
The Vibram outsole is durable with decent traction outside of just slightly wet surfaces. since they're a relatively hard rubber, they tip-tap on the road, and are slick as snot on slightly wet painted surfaces (road-lines, painted concrete, etc.) and some natural surfaces. overall good off road and on the road.
I have a low-volume foot, with just about normal width. These shoes are taxed on how tight I can get them. I have them at the tightest they'll go. I wish they put more adjustability into the shoes instead of the funky lace straps that they use (you can see them in the pictures). The laces are a bit long for the shoe, which means they'll come undone unless you wrap the first loop of your laces twice when tying them, then they're good.
I'd buy another pair when these wear out, but would love to see them go to a slightly lower volume overall.
Also! buy them bigger than you think. I measure at 14.5, but when I run with my 15's, I wish they were even a bit longer as my feet splay and stretch out.
Good shoes, kudos to Merrell for building 15's. shame on New Balance for stopping at 14 with their minimus (and inov8 and Vibram fivefingers outside one model).
