I have run for 28 years and completed 14 internationial marathons. I ran vertually all those years in the 998 and found it to be the best although somewhat soft as a marathon shoe it did very well by my standards. I also tried the 1300 but found it too hard in the late going. I always kept three pairs going and never ran in the same shoe two days in a row. Thanx NB

This shoe is the worst newbalance shoe i ever worn.I should have ordered half size larger. Not a true "D" width and they are too tight an uncomfortabole shoes and not much cusion at all.

This my 33rd year of running and I've tried a lot of shoes: Some good and some not so good. The 998 is a great all around shoe. I have to lace them a little tight so my heel doesn't slide around but other than that I love them. I ran a 14 mile today on varied terrain and I feel great afterward even at 50. I plan to wear a pair during my next Ironman Triathlon. Please keep size 14 in stock. Thank you!

i just bought 2 pair again of new balance 998. i am 55 years old and in my 40th year of running and suffer from achilles tendon injuries, like most multi year runners. the soft wide heel counter of the NB 998 is perfect for me. i put some neoprene inserts in and my feet like they did in my 20's! i have tried various other new balance shoes, but for my money, this is the one.

The shoe was much too tight, especially in the instep. Not a true "D" width. The shoe was very stiff and didn't have very much cushioning. Maybe I just got a pair that slipped through the QC inspectors.

I have tried all of the New Balance style type #996 for 17 or 18 years. It seems as if I keep going back to the #998 for overall comfort, style, etc. White color for treadmill running and gray for the road. Thankfully, RRS still markets them from New Balance.

In the stability category, these are the least favorite shoe I've ever worn. I didn't like the lacing system, and the shoe is too loose in the heel. I had a hard time getting these shoes to feel comfortable. I bought these since the claim is they were a high-mileage shoe, but I found myself dreading wearing them when it came time these shoes' time in the rotation. Originally, I got a good deal and thought I'd buy more than one pair - but decided to try them out on a run before ordering a second. Turned out to be a good call, since I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I put 400 miles on these before tossing them out, and should have just returned them after 20. I was happy to throw these out.

Great shoe! As a 55+ year old ex-jock carrying 270+lbs with weak knees; the NB998 is the answer. The excellent combination of stability and cushioning have cut down on the post work out pains and strains. Presently, power walking. Hopefully, when the weight gets down, I'll be jogging and running in these. Plod on!!!

I agree that this is the best shoe I have worn for both running and casual wear. I have worn out about a half dozen pair and have one in reserve. I'd buy two or three more tomorrow if I could; went on the website to order and found my size out. Another loss. I see quite a few other guys wearing this shoe, so it is not such a rarity. Please restart it. Lots of us would like it to go on.

This is one of the best running shoes I've ever used. I've been running for a long time and have tried many different shoes, and they've all been good, but the 998 is my favorite. The shoe is very liteweight, responsive, and very durable. The outsole rubber in the heel is very thick, which helps for long wear. I'm a competitive marathon runner and am training for and will be running the Big Sur International Marathon in the 998s. Highly recommended.

Grey M998! what can i say? "excellent" could be the right word. I bought M998 and M580 from RRS to China. Both are great shoes, well, some may select ST33 998, but i tell you, never fight against original 998. Also, RRS, a great service provider!

I notice many reviewers are older runner/walkers sticking to a great old favorite. This shoe is very good with one tip: Buy one a half size larger and put the old foot pad on top of the new one. Any one over 50 should have extra padding.

The advertising sold me as a high mileage trainer. Yes, the shoes are comfortable, but found some slippage, and just don't feel they live up to their billing. Much better prefer Brooks Adrenaline GTS (best shoes I've had). At 5'11", 183, I was looking for another great stability shoe and wanted to experiment. I'll be looking elsewhere, maybe within NB and Saucony.

The Two pairs of 998's that I purchased in Oct 2007 were much lower quality than 998's that I had purchased in the past. Fit was different for the same size, 10D. Caused cuts on outer feet. Too tight at the top of the foot. This is the first bad experience that I have had with NB shoes in 20+ years.

Although not very pleasing to the eye and represents more of what my grandfather would wear the 998 has proved to be the best shoe I've ever owned. I’m 6'0, 200 lbs and in the military. I run 3-5 miles, five day a week. This shoe is the only thing that keeps my legs alive. Great shoe, but not one I would show off to my friends.

Do not buy these shoes if you need wide shoes. I wear an 11 2E. The toe box is narrow and gave me blisters after just 4 miles of walking. I wanted to buy the New Balance 580 but it was not available. That was a great shoe and it even cost less!

It had been 12 years after I worn my first pair of New Balance 998. When I retired it because of its wear and tear, I couldn't find it elsewhere for a new one, due to the discontinuation and replacement of this model. I then embarked on what new balance has at the time to salvage for 998. Let me tell you, nothing can compare to the good, old 998: the look, the comfort, the durability, the feel and the trust it gave me to put on running every step of the way! I'm disappointed in the newer, upgraded models New Balance is producing today. They look nothing like the heritage shoes. They become modernized with all the "mumble-jumble" designs that cause all sorts of negative feedback from NB users, myself included. Many of the New Balance running shoes these days are considered "commercial productions." In my opinion, New Balance has lost its touch in creating greate running shoes to date, and I wish I can see new balance put its philosophy and effort to really make good shoes again. Afte

I have to revisit what I said below. When the shoe contributes to a shin splint something's wrong on MY foot. I walked into the NB store in central Jersey look for an orthotic and the guy took one look at the 998 and said "You're not running in those, are you?" He gave me arch-supporters to line the shoe and it helps somewhat, but first chance I get I'm going back for the 992. I tried to economize before and it was a false economy.

New runner that I am, I've got two pairs: the 998 and newer 891 both work for me. The former recommended by someone at RR Sports; the 891 by the owner of an NB store in Jersey. Nobody has steered me wrong.

I have had 2 left knee scopes, 1 right knee...I have tried other brands, more sportier looking shoes, promising the same benefits, but I keep coming back to these/New Balance. I've tried Asics, Nike (the worst), Brooks, Adidas, I weigh 210, 5'9'', log 20 miles a week (slowly), over-pronate. Hope this helps.

Since I bought the original put on the market in 1993, I have used this NB 998GR regularly. NB 998GR purchased from RRS in February, 2003 has already been tired. Therefore, I thought that I would buy it again at the end of April, 2005. However, RRS did not have stock of my size then. However, RRS answered that they will arrive in May. I placed an order for 998GR to RRS today. It is only RRS that we can purchase 998GR. I wish that RRS deals with 998GR manufactured in the United States forever.

The 998 was the workhorse for my marathon training last year, and worked great. Tremendous comfort, very durable, also good for casual wear. I made the mistake of briefly switching to the 991 and quickly developed problems in my toes (I think they had a seam right by my big toes). Went back to the 998 and the problem disappeared.

I am on my second pair of 998's. I am a Clydesdale triathlete (6.3., 215, 13-2E), running 20-25 miles/wk. These shoes are bedroom-slipper-comfortable, however, I pounded my first pair into oblivion in less than 3 months. Seeking something more solidly built, and with updated materials and better cushioning, I got a pair of the new Asics Gel Kayano IX's. They are gorgeous and very well-made, but after 3 miles on the treadmill (hey, it was raining really hard outside, OK?), the narrowness of the 2E model began to hurt. I switched back to my NB's, and the relief was incredible. Since my size doesn.t come in =-widths, I LOVE the fact that the 998.s are true to size. What is up with every other shoe, why can.t the size be the size???
