10 years later after numerous brands and styles I returned to the 998. The shoe has a very soft ride but provides the stability and support I need for my 200lb frame. Even the laces are great. I added some over the counter insoles for some added arch support and am very happy. I will be sticking with the 998 from here on out!

i just bought 2 pair again of new balance 998. i am 55 years old and in my 40th year of running and suffer from achilles tendon injuries, like most multi year runners. the soft wide heel counter of the NB 998 is perfect for me. i put some neoprene inserts in and my feet like they did in my 20's! i have tried various other new balance shoes,but for my money, this is the one.

The Two pairs of 998's that I purchased in Oct 2007 were much lower quality than 998's that I had purchased in the past. Fit was different for the same size, 10D. Caused cuts on outer feet. Too tight at the top of the foot. This is the first bad experience that I have had with NB shoes in 20+ years.

I have had 2 left knee scopes, 1 right knee...I have tried other brands, more sportier looking shoes, promising the same benefits, but I keep coming back to these/New Balance. I've tried Asics, Nike (the worst), Brooks, Adidas, I weigh 210, 5'9'', log 20 miles a week (slowly), over-pronate. Hope this helps.

I'm 5'10", 180. Have found the 998's to be the best shoe for cushion and stability. I jog 30-40 miles per week. I'm 67 and they are great on aging legs.

I have always worn a D width shoe but the 998 was way too tight across the top of my foot and doesn't fit like a D width.

I veered away from my typical Gel Kayano's due to mixed reviews. These had great reviews. For me, they are too narrow (I bought D's, which I have always bought), and I felt my feet were overhanging (on the arch-side) the cushioning of the shoe, which caused foot pain and over-pronation. The laces hit a spot on the top of my foot that caused pain. Tongue seemed a bit thinner than it should be, especially where the upper laces cross. The cushioning didn't seem great either, as my knees hurt more than normal - this may have been a result of the over-pronation. I'm 6'1", 210lbs, 32y.o., have been running for a very long time...

These shoes were recommended to my husband by a podiatrist the year they came out and he has worn them ever since. He will not wear any other casual shoe. PLEASE! Get them back in stock. Are they going to be back? If so, when?

I use these shoes to run 3-5 miles per week. I'm just getting started running again after a couple years and some knee troubles. I've worn many brands and models of running shoes in the past, but have always found New Balance shoes to be the right mix of stability, durability, price, and least important aesthetics. I have narrow feet, but due to large toes require a roomy toe box. I also over pronate. I ordered these shoes in a narrow. The length, ankle area, and toe box are just the right size, but they do feel a little tight over the tops of my feet. Next time I'll ordered the medium width, which hopefully will mitigate that tightness. I'm happy to recommend these shoes. They feel solid, not too heavy, and provide good support and cushioning.

My husband ordered these shoes because they were on clearance and he'd heard good things about them. They're listed on the site as being good shoes for his size and stride. He said, after running in them a couple times, that one foot fit and the other didn't. Also, they made his legs hurt. He decided to keep them as casual shoes and will continue to run in his Mizuno Nirvanas!

My husband has worn the NB 998 for many, many years now. He had polio & places all his weight on the heel of his right foot. He needs stability that does not hamper his movement. This shoe has enabled him to work in a construction related field where he is on his feet for 10 or more hours per day, 6 days per week, carrying heavy materials. (A "perk" of owning your own business.) We were so happy to learn that RRS carried the 998 when years ago we could no longer find it locally. He wears these shoes in rotation, with one pair for "casual" wear and the others rotating for work. [...] Please keep providing them, they are a real necessity in our family.

The Shoe was great and stylish. I love the color. Quality was near perfect, just wish it wouldbe be real leather where pleather was used. But I love the quality of the suede and mesh and the overall feel of the shoe. It feels real well around the foot, and there is lots of padding within the shoe to make it feel nice on the foot when wearing no show socks.
