10 years later after numerous brands and styles I returned to the 998. The shoe has a very soft ride but provides the stability and support I need for my 200lb frame. Even the laces are great. I added some over the counter insoles for some added arch support and am very happy. I will be sticking with the 998 from here on out!

i just bought 2 pair again of new balance 998. i am 55 years old and in my 40th year of running and suffer from achilles tendon injuries, like most multi year runners. the soft wide heel counter of the NB 998 is perfect for me. i put some neoprene inserts in and my feet like they did in my 20's! i have tried various other new balance shoes,but for my money, this is the one.

The Two pairs of 998's that I purchased in Oct 2007 were much lower quality than 998's that I had purchased in the past. Fit was different for the same size, 10D. Caused cuts on outer feet. Too tight at the top of the foot. This is the first bad experience that I have had with NB shoes in 20+ years.

I have had 2 left knee scopes, 1 right knee...I have tried other brands, more sportier looking shoes, promising the same benefits, but I keep coming back to these/New Balance. I've tried Asics, Nike (the worst), Brooks, Adidas, I weigh 210, 5'9'', log 20 miles a week (slowly), over-pronate. Hope this helps.

I'm 5'10", 180. Have found the 998's to be the best shoe for cushion and stability. I jog 30-40 miles per week. I'm 67 and they are great on aging legs.

There is nothing this shoe can't do. Wear it to work; on your feet all day; go for a run; backpack 60 miles; play tennis; off to dinner - it won't quit. Stable gentle heel strikes for running. I climbed Kilimanjaro on it.

There is not another shoe that you can wear to work (business dress), run on pavement, backpack on uneven terrain, play tennis, trail run, wear on wet days in grass.

I run several times per week. Although it's not a light shoe compared to many others, this shoe provides excellent cushioning for runners like me, 6' 3", 220 lb. Too bad it is going to be discontinued, but hopefully NB will replace it with some other gray pigskin shoe with cushioning like they have done for the past 20 years!

I have been wearing the 99x series in a 10-1/2 D for over 20 years except never tried the 998. I tried the 998 since it was less expensive than the 990. The toe box on the 998 is narrower than on the 992, 993, 990. The 998 10-1/2 D feels tight in the toes and after wearing for a few hours tighter. I wrote to New Balance (via the form on their web site) and New Balance replied that the 998 was designed with a narrower toe box and that it was not meant as a running shoe, but as an everyday shoe. I will be returning the shoes and getting a the new 990 which I have tried on in the store.

My husband has worn the NB 998 for many, many years now. He had polio & places all his weight on the heel of his right foot. He needs stability that does not hamper his movement. This shoe has enabled him to work in a construction related field where he is on his feet for 10 or more hours per day, 6 days per week, carrying heavy materials.

I used to run in the New Balance 999s, 998s, and 990s until NB added so much cushioning to the forefoot that this series turned into train tracks stacked on top of pillows.

I decided to try the 998s after a long while of other support NBs and ASICS...for old time's sake. Unfortunately these are not the shoes I remember. If the current NBs have too much cushion in the forefoot, then these are the other extreme: stiff and cushioned mostly in the heel.

I am not surprised that many happy reviewers report using inserts; these shoes feel virtually empty from the midfoot/arch forward. Maybe these are good for hard heel strikers. But as your gate shifts forward from the heel impact, your shins, forefeet, and toes take the hit.

Really dissapointing beucause I loved this series of NB shoes.
