These shoes helped me come back from a 6-month break from running due to plantar fasciitis. I'm training for a half marathon and have had absolutely no issues with blisters. As others have noted, they work well with orthotics. I also have very wide feet and had previously run in Saucony. Maybe the blisters are an issue for those with narrower feet.

I just trained for and completed my first marathon in these shoes, and I sure wish I'd seen these reviews first! Like others, I ended up with blisters on the outside of my big toes (never a problem in any other shoes), plus little blisters in some odd places on other toes. The tongue is way too short and always slips down during the run. I've also struggled with ankle and hip pain in these in ways that I haven't before. I attributed it to the increase in mileage, but now I wonder if the shoes didn't contribute to the problems...

I was on a quest for a better shoe - I tried several sizes and brands - used to wear Sauconys - now am big NB fan!

I've been using the 850 series since 583 and usually these shoes are consisently great for me. However, the last time I've loved the shoe was 856. The 857s were alittle less good - but I really hate the 858 version. I, like other reviewers, have received blisters and my feet now have aches and pains on longer runs (6+ miles). The earlier versions NEVER gave me blisters - they were miracle shoes - but New Balance keeps changing this series for the worse. That being said, I'm still giving it 3 stars because I will prefer this series over any Asics or other running shoe I've ever tried (other than the former New Balance 850 series). I am wondering if I need to switch to the more expensive 1011 because that has the "rollbar" technology the 853-856 versions had but that the 857 and 858 no longer have.

compared to the 857 I see a big difference...part of right shoe side rubs next to tongue..had to soak the tongue and then bend it back for a couple of days..still creeps up.
Got a blister and black/blue toenailss at LA marathon 3/2 ...NEVER had blister on big toe before...NEVER had black/ble tonails EVEN with 22 mile runs

Buying my second pair. Big toe box enhances stability. No rubs ever - but I (like another reviewer) have big (10.5) feet with high arches and my weight is probably high compared to others. Also my first runner that didn't need a different insert.

Liked them at first, but later they became too heavy during long runs. Never had blisters before, but do with these. Nice wide toe box for orthotics. Tongue too short so knot rubs on top of foot. Top sides too high and rub blisters on top.

I guess it all depends on your foot. I LOVE these (and I read all the bad reviews.) Prior to this I had Saucony Hurricane 8s and Asics 1220's. Liked the Sauconys, HATE the Asics, but these fit way better than both. I have large (size 10.5) hard to fit, wide feet and I pronate. I'm also quite heavy for a woman (5'9, 200 pounds, with dubious knees). These are snug in the heel, just wide enough but not too wide in the forefoot, and feel great. My feet are happy, my knees are happy, and I don't mind the high cut - they don't rub against my ankle bones. It actually makes them feel more secure. First shoes that haven't required insert or insoles, nor given me blisters.

I have been a fan of the 850's series starting with the 851. I thought the 856 was a great shoe. However, the 858 has given me nothing but alot of blisters. I had them for 3 months and they are still giving me blisters. Hopefully, the Asic that I just ordered will work better.

I've worn the 850 series for years and was was shocked at the change in the 858. It's given me blisters on every run and my ankles and arches hurt. I'm returning them.

I wore the 856 and 857 with no problems. Bought the 858's since they stopped making the 857's and within 3 short runs my feet were killing me. It got so bad that if I even took one step in them I would get a sharp pain in my ankle. If I put on any other shoe the pain was instantly gone. Too bad they stopped making the 857. I had no choice but to switch to another brand after years of New Balance.

Thu, December 13,2007:
Wore 856 and 857 with no conflict with my bunions because the mesh went over that part, but in the 858 there is a strip of hard material that cuts across the bunions at the widest part, resulting in cuts and blisters. I can wear them for 5 to 10 miles with only mild blisters, but have to switch out with old shoes beyond that. Since the shoe is for over-pronators and folks with bunions are generally over-pronators, this change was really dumb and creates major problems. It is extremely hard to find running shoes that accommodate bunions, and New Balance just messed up what had been a good series.

I've worn the 857s for the longest time, and was pretty disappointed when they stopped making them. I got these as the next step up, and what a disappointment! My feet burn & blister on the bottom when I wear them, and I've had them for months & they're still don't have that broken in feel. New Balance, go back to the 857!

Very disappointing--the sides are cut very high and after about 4 miles I looked down and both of my ankles were bleeding. Other than the fact I can't wear them they felt pretty comfortable. Bummer.

seemed ok in 2 5Ks but gave me horrible blistering in the forefoot during 10 mi & trail marathon (never a blister before ever), it is narrower in toebox & less forefoot cushioning than your 857s of same size, sending mine back & getting 5th pr of 857s which i love. i'm mostly a trail runner, 20% street, i am 112 lb mild overpronater w/low arch.

I have been running in Kayano's for years and never thought about running in another shoe!! Well, I am ditching the Asics and New Balance is my new Best friend!!! They maintain the bounce through the whole run..The longest I have ran in them as been 12 miles, but I felt like I had only ran 5!! Try them, you will love them!!!
