Best of the 12XX series-good support for the big guy, great fit and comfort and the transition and cushioning is on par with some of the better nike shoes I've loved in the past. Plastic asic poopies in the midfoot are kept at a mimimum as well. I hope RRS keeps ordering this model with no decrease in quality.

5'10, 180lbs. 5k pace @ 7:30, 32yo. Prior to re-finding this shoe, I had to wear the Brooks Beast or the NB 12xx series. Both are very good shoes, but also very heavy. Both are "motion control plus" which was obvious by the total lack of shin splints I experienced.
This shoe was re-released and is categorized as a "stability" shoe. I have given it the distance test, the speed test, the first day test. So far, about 30 miles on these shoes and not a hint of knee or shin splint pain. New Balance, please keep making this shoe--call it an Antique Series if you like. All I know is I can finally run in a shoe that is flexible AND light with no pain at all.
Five stars, and mine came with a Made In USA tag so no China worries...
Thanks to RRS (can't find these anywhere else) and NB!

I don't think you can say a shoe is bad except for the way it's made. Most reviews are poor for this shoe but I love mine. The toe box is wide and perfect for a wide foot. I am a woman and it is great for me since all of the womens wides are never really wide enough.

the big toebox pretty much eliminates NB for me. I lost my big toenail in the 1223's my first marathon because my foot slid too much in these shoes. If you have a thin foot, then Brooks are a good option. I've always liked the styling of NB shoes, but they dont fit my foot right. You really need a thick foot to fit these well. Still, they got me through my first marathon, so I can't dog them to much.

After NB "upgraded" the 991 to th 992, I had serious knee and shin issues. RRS and NB both recommended the 1223. Big mistake!! These absolutely KILL me. I have even worse issues with my knees, my IT band, and with my plantar fascia. And they make me run flat-footed. I'm eagerly awaiting the 993 to see if it's an improvement over the 992.

It's a well-made shoe with a lot of cushioning si I'll give it 2 stars, but it just wasn't for me. The toebox is huge, it's very wide and gave me blisters in the 1st metatarsal and the inside of the heel as well as shin splints. Felt heavy and clunky too. I'll be exchanging them after only 75 miles.

Excellent shoe! I started with this shoe November of 2007 in which I was 6'0 and was 215lbs. By May of 2008 I was a solid 188lbs. and was running 3-5 miles a day compared to trying to walk a mile in a half. Now I'm looking forward to the 1224's to hurry up in the mail.

I'm 5'8" 150#, run 5-6 miles/day at a fast pace and do a few full marathons a year. These shoes were recommended for my running type. First observation was the heal show significant wear within the first few months but the worst issue is I develop a blister on the outside ball behind my right toe. When I run my finger inside the right shoe I feel a bulge so possibly a manufacturing defect. The cushioning could be better since I usually feel discomfort on my lower leg from impact. For a pricey pair of shoes I expected better. Looking at another brand for my next pair.

This is a follow-up to my July review. Been training in this shoe for a year now and can find absolutely nothing negative about it. People tell me they look great and I know they perform superbly for someone my size (5'-10", 170 lb. race wt.) with slight over-pronation. Being an older runner, I've tried a bunch of shoes but always come back to New Balance. Have 3 pair of 1223's, with 2 pair in rotation as I train for the Virginia Beach marathon. With at least 150 miles on these shoes, the cushioning still feels great. Why NB is dropping this model is beyond me. It's predecessor will have to be a "crown jewel"!!

I started with the 1221s and moved on to the 1222s. The 21s were awesome, the 22s never felt right, and the 23s are the best shoe I've ever run in. I bought another pair immediately after my first running session to alternate with. I hope they're replacing it with something as good, because these will be hard to beat... perfect balance of cushion and stability and low weight for a med mileage, 180lb 6' runner.

Have no idea why NB would discontinue this shoe because it's awesome. For my build (5'-10" & 175-180 lbs) and training routine (15-20 miles/wk), I haven't found anything in the Brooks or Asics lines that works as well. Very light with great cushioning. Have two pair in rotation; planning to order a 3rd pair before they're gone.

I pronate a bit with medium arches, and haven't had any issues with the shoe. Great shoe for 10K or longer distances. Would look at new 903 for speedwork or 5K's. NB way to go! I'm a medium built runner (5'-9", 180), med. arch, and over pronate with one foot more than the other. Just bought a 2nd pair to put into my running routine (15-20 mile/wk); thinking about purchasing a 3rd pair since NB is discontinuing this model. Don't understand why NB is taking this action since these shoes are fantastic! The toe box fit in D width is perfect & the mesh upper helps to keep the feet cool. Ran a 5 miler right out-of-the-box, on asphalt, and the cushioning felt excellent for my weight. Also tried some speed work; they felt slightly "bulky" but not bad. My plans are to use this shoe for training runs (asphalt & rubberized track), 10K's, and 1/2 marathons. Had been using NB 991's & 992's for years before settling on this model. Tried other brands like Asics Kayano 11 & 14 and they didn't match up with the NB 1223 for me. A solid 5 stars- can't find anything wrong with this shoe.

This is my first serious pair of New Balance running shoes as I have been a Mizuno Wave Renegade guy for a while now. I got these and put about 25 miles on them before running the Costa del Luz Half Marathon here in Spain. Decent. Not great, but decent. The cushioning seems to fade just a bit at the end and I had to stop twice to readjust the laces as the upper stretched quite a bit and began feeling sloppy- I'm thinking I should have sized normal instead of half up. Once these are done, I'm going to give the 1062 a try and see if the cushioning holds up better. But, I'd still rate these a pretty decent 4 our of 5 stars.

At 6'1, 210 lbs, multiple hamstring pulls since third run; comfortable, good-looking shoe for cardio machine and weight training, but sub-par stability and cushioning for 15+ miles/week road work. I've used numerous pairs of 1220s - great to sometimes excessive stability, but rarely ever injured. Hoped that 1223s could replace 1220s, but again using 1220s for road work.

I have worn these shows through numerous 10k, half-marathon, and marathons since back with the NB 1220. The shoe is a little on the heavy side, but I like the cushioning with a Spenco Cross Trainer insert. At 6'1" and 225, this is a good shoe for heavy runners. I had tried other but this is the best.

I'm 215 pound runner upgrading from the 1221 to the 1223 and they are great. Overall cushion is better than the 1221 especially in the forefoot but its not too soft either. The fit is better and the shoe feels much lighter with the same stability. The toe box is slightly higher but after 10 miles that's a good thing and not a detractor at all.

Guys if you "toe off", roll off the front or whatever you call it don't buy this shoe, I'm 5'9", 210, after a 1/2 mile my achilles and shin just above the ankle begins to hurt and it only gets worse. The 1223 has a very flat ride and the cushioning is firm. To add insult to injury some designer decided to put hard plastic in the arch. Very dissapointed, I've been running in New Balance shoes for well over 10 yrs (usually 700 series) and wore multiple pairs of 761, 763, and 765 (awesome shoe!). Tried 767 and it had a hard ride, first time a 700 shoe didn't fit in memory. Sorry New Balance you lost my money and too the online "expert" who advised me to buy a Stability + shoe, when someone tells you they toe off don't recommend this shoe.

I've already put on about 70 miles on my 1223's and it looks like New Balance is back on track with a decent 1200 series shoe. I was getting to the point where I was wearing out the 1220's in less than 150 miles ever since they started making them in China. And I've heard such bad reviews on the 1221 and 1222 from friends, that I never even went there. The 1223's have the good old made in the USA sticker on them and the rubber seems to be more dense in the heels and toes. I'm barely showing any wear on them. They have however changed the widths. I used to be a 13 2E, which is too wide now and I have dropped back to a D width. I'm still debating going up to the size 14, because the 13 D is borderline of being too short. Anyway, I'm just happy to have found what looks to be a decent shoe again. I'm a heavy runner weighing in the 220 lbs range and wear out shoes pretty quick. I'm heavy into marathons right now. So I'm doing alot of long slow training.

I just got a pair of the 1223's today to replace my 1222's which I've had for over a year. Let me tell you, they are great shoes. I never thought I would find a shoe that would be as comfortable as my 1222's but I was definitely wrong; These shoes are very light yet have the support a heavier shoe offers. Another thing to note is how well they breathe and keep your feet cool. I highly recommend these shoes to anybody looking for all-around good shoes.
