I run 40 to 60 miles per week (year-round) and compete in everything from 5K to 50K races. I train and compete in these shoes. I have worn Asics Gel Kayanos, NB991s, NB992s, NB2001s, and I currently alternate between the NB993s and the NB2002s. Of all the shoes mentioned above, the NB993s are the best. They provide great cushioning, they are very durable, they look great, and they are reliable. I never get any surprises when I'm running in these shoes. They perform the best on pavement, but are fine on firm gravel surfaces or dry trails. If you need more traction, the NB2002s are better. On the whole, this is the best shoe on the market. You get better durability, reliability, and appearance than the similarly-priced Gel Kayanos, and they have better durability in the heel, and are a better overall value than the NB2002s[...]Additionally, when these shoes inevitably outlive their life span for running, they are great for the gym, casual wear, or yard work.

The New Balance 993 is the perfect running shoe. While not light weight and intended for racing, it does provide the cushion, comfort, and stability for harsh training conditions. If a racing shoe would be compared to a Porsche, the New Balance 993 is a BMW M5 (high performance luxury sedan).

The New Balance 993 is a trustworthy shoe, it is going to take you hundreds of miles without concern. The durable soles and well designed uppers have never failed me over the years. The Abzorb technology in the heel and forefoot reduce your impact energy from being sent back up to your body.

I once went to a runners clinic where a representative had a ball made of the Abzorb technology. Even though it felt similar to rubber, no matter how hard you threw this ball to the ground, it would not bounce. It transferred all downward energy outward and not back up. This demo alone sold me on New Balance and got me out of a brand I had been loyal to for years. No regrets.

Styling? Well, it has been said these shoes are a bit old fashioned looking, a little retro. While they don't have glitz, glare, and wild colors, this runner could care less. New Balance designed a great shoe many years ago and only made slight tweaks of improvement. It must be tough for New Balance to redesign perfection!

I ran as a collegiate athlete to many accolades. My body as acquired many aches and pains over the years but I still run because I love it. My New Balance 993 allow me this opportunity 75 miles a week, where so many other shoes have failed.

Heard lots of good things about this shoe, but it is not for me. For those with inserts/orthotics, this may be a good shoe, but alone it is not cushioned enough for me.

I have used the 990 series for many years and have had multiple pairs of each one. This is the only one I will NOT be getting another pair of.

The problem is the sole. It falls apart. Instead of a solid one piece rubber sole it is made of a few different pieces and those pieces come unglued from the midsole. It is a stupid design and should be discontinued ASAP. I loved the previous incarnations of this shoes due to their fit and durability but this one is VERY disappointing.

I have been running in New Balance, 900 model shoes since they first came out in the 1980'S ,the shoe has continued to improve, while the price has stayed pretty close to its original 90 bucks.Furthermore, I now run 20 miles a week on four running days ,about 1000 miles per year.I have found I can do this on one pair of shoes and not get hurt. This shoe is very durable ,supportive, stable,and comfortable.What it is not is fast ,but neither am I anymore. I WANT TO RUN INJURY FREE AS LONG AS I CAN.With this shoe I am able to do just that.I have tried other shoes over the years often because someone at a running shoe store told me no real runner uses those things . So I tried something lighter,faster made with the lastest technology only to have shin splints, knee pain,calf pulls,and even a stress fracture in my ankle. I will continue to run in these shoes, because despite what all the running shoe experts say I Have found nothing that compares,I love them!

Best running shoe I've ever owned. Have worn this style (when I can find it) for years. I'm a big guy (6'6", 250lbs) with long, narrow feet (14B). It's amazing to be a tall, 'fat guy' with long, skinny feet - NB is the only shoe I've found that provides shoes that cater to the heavy runner with narrow feet AND the shoes run true to size. Just wish they were a bit less pricey, but my Club discount injected some reality into what I paid. I will never buy another style running shoe as long as I can get these or ones like them from NB & RRS.

I was elated to learn though that the company had again upgraded to 993s which includes a combination of foam and gel. I think they're lighter than 992s too and the feel on first putting on a pair of 993s is very similar to putting on a pair of 991s. They did keep the multiple color options of the 992 line so you can get these in black, grey, white.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this product.

These are the worst shoes I've worn in 37 years of running. Feel cheap, look cheap, fit cheap--the only thing not cheap is the price. heavy runner, 35 miles a week, i've run over 100 marathons and ultra incl. 8 iron man distance tris. lots of good and bad shoes--never one this bad.

I've tried two different Asics before settling on this shoes. I've always worn New Balance and should have stuck with it. Roadrunnersports replaced both shoes without any problem.

If you're a casual runner and on the edge -- just spend the money and get this shoe. I'm 6'5" 190 lbs and run a few times a week. I feel like the support and comfort provided by these shoes encourages me to run more and leaves my knees/ankles feeling good.

I walk/jog about 15 miles a week, and workout for about 10 hours a week. Shoes are just great. I have four pairs - one gray and black (for office wear); one black for walk and exercisel and the last black for indoor workout at home.

Let me start by saying that I lift weights 5 days a week and do cardio 3 days a week. I got these shoes, although they are running shoes, to wear to work. I work in a hospital and am on my feet all day long. I have plantar fasciitis and these shoes seem to really help with heel pain.
Since wearing these to work, I don't have any heel pain. I have great arch support and the shoes are very cushion-y and comfortable to wear. They are stylish and very breathable. I wore a pair of Sketcher Shape Ups to help with low back pain, but was not getting relief of my heel pain. With the NB 993s, I can have both and don't feel like I am wearing moon boots.
I have owned some really good shoes, NB, Adidas, Reebok, etc. and must say that these do the trick. I just want another pair so I can wear them to the gym. :)

I've been wearing these shoes or their predecessor (the 992) for 10 years. I run 4-6 road miles in them 5 days a week. They're great - comfortable & supportive. However, I'm a bigger guy (~190lb) & the cushion blows out after 3 or 4 months. The shoes are still good for a wearing-around town then, but it would be nice if they lasted for 6 months, since they're not cheap.

I first got these for my dad, and then after hearing how much he liked them, I decided to get a pair for myself. My dad had used the 991, but after being disappointed by the 992, I switched him over to the kayano series. after hearing how the 993 was more of a return to the 991 (his favorite shoe), he decided to give the 993 a try.
After wearing them myself, all I have to say is I am very impressed with this shoe. The fit really is great right out of the box, and the cushioning in the shoe is better than anything I've ever worn (previously ran in the nike air max 2009). I am 185 lbs and my dad is 210, and we both love the cushioning this shoe provides. It is both soft and supportive at the same time. Another plus is that the shoe wears extremely well. The upper is very well constructed, and since I was used to seeing my dad's kayanos' uppers begin ripping after a few months, i was quite surprised to see the 993s still looking more or less new after 3+ months of wear.

having said that, there are 2 areas where I think this shoe can be improved. the first is with the breathability. the mesh on the shoe is not the same open mesh most modern running shoes, and while this helps the appearance, it does make the shoe a little hot. obviously, this is not a problem on winter runs. also the lining of the shoe is not a moisture wicking material. the second and more important issue I have with the 993 is the outsole durability. surprisingly, it is the forefoot, not the heel, that is the area of concern. New Balance used a lot less rubber in the forefoot because they added more flex grooves for added flexibility than in previous models, but this comes at the expense of the forefoot outsole durability. also the somewhat aggressively designed outsole, which helps with traction, only causes the already limited amount of rubber to wear down even faster.

Still, the comfort this shoe provides is unbelievable, and in my opinion, the positives of the shoe far outweigh the negatives. Don't let the retro look fool you; this shoe is loaded with modern tech and it feels great. I would definitely get this shoe again.

I have been using this model shoe and all of its previous incarnations since 1979. I typically get two-pair and rotate each daily.

Normal life expectancy is approximately 1000 miles: Sometimes 200-300 miles more. Never had a pair fail to reach 1K.

They run out of tread before they run out of cushion, and as a bonus, they are Illuminated Well for Evening/Night/Early AM/Runners/Joggers/Walkers.

No other brand, or other New Balance model, I have experimented with has managed to compete with this shoe in comfort, fit, finish, durability and style. It has been an exceptionally dependable product for many, many moons.

That's the facts Jack. Don't know where I will turn if the quality of this shoe goes south.

I started buying the 993's when they were still 992's, and have kept right on replacing the ones I've wore out. Great shoes for just about any occasion. Running, walking, Nautilus,or business casual. The combination of gray suede leather and nylon fabric construction wears like iron. But, a friend told me that he had a problem with the toe stitching coming loose in several of his 993's. I've not had that problem, but New Balance might consider cutting the suede toe cap slightly larger to avoid the problem. All in all, its a great shoe and at 71 years of age, I'm still kicking, running and walking in my 993's...
