Background: I've been getting back into athletics for a while and have been having quite a few issues with the running aspect of my workouts. I've a heavy guy at 247lb, but I'm also 15% body-fat: a little soft, but not obese. My RHR is in the lower 50's, total cholesterol is 112, and RBP is 112/68: healthy all the way around. I'd rate myself as an athlete, but as a destination... not a current location.

I've been having a hard time stepping up to full-price running shoes for my roadwork (component to my training in Krav) and have been relying on "my size" and "my width" at discount stores. After endless frustration at my inability to develop noticeable increases in neither speed nor endurance, I finally broke down and went to a running store. My lack of development was from pain, not lack of effort... but running has ALWAYS hurt me, so I figured that was just part of the game of growing muscle faster than Bush grew the deficit.

The store recommended the ASICS Nimbus 11, but I learned that the 12s were coming out at the end of this month and decided to wait to try those out before buying. My other option was the Brooks Glycerin 8, but I was hesitant that I was a bit too heavy for them. I like to research things, so I tried to find advanced news on the Nimbus 12. That's when I found RoadRunner and the Shoe Dog recommended the 1064. The application seemed to recommend appropriate shoes based on what I learned at the running store (3 of 3 they recommended were recommended by the Shoe Dog) and I really liked the idea of the inner floating liner that secures the arch. Then there was the fact that the guy on the Runner's World review said "smart choice for bigger runners" more than he actually reviewed the shoe.

My first visual reaction was "typical New Balance styling," but with a little more spaceman and a little less pocket protector than their older designs. I like the avant garde/raver thing these shoes have going on. When they showed up, I was still in my bathrobe. I laced them up and ran a quick lap on my treadmill without changing. I couldn't believe it! At first, with some walking, they felt stiff, clunky, and a mistake. I was throughly impressed with the fit and I had to stop to check them out because I thought my heel was slipping (wide forefoot, high arch, heavy, slight supinator, narrow heel... finding shoes has always been difficult). When I checked, the shoe was ANCHORED to my foot. The sensation I was getting was from two things: the sweat-wicking liner and the absolutely PERFECT fit. Road Runner recommends you order these a 1/2 size big and I recommend that, too: I followed their advice and these things fit better than my freak feet ever have.

Now for the run. Mind you, I had only walked for two minutes before taking them to speed and I hadn't installed my orthotics. For those that get irritated at the time it takes to break in their shoes, no worries: these things are cocked locked and ready to rock. When I took them to speed (7mph), the shoe came alive... they're like Dr. Jeckyll and Sasha Grey: these things MAKE LOVE to your feet so good it made me feel naughty and ask for more. The cushioning in the heel is remarkable, and I'm not much of a heel-striker, so this is incredible to me. The toe box is perfect for my freak feet, and the lateral fit I get with the 2E width is ridiculous.

Now here's the strange part: they made me feel like I was clomping along at 5-6mph. My gait was relaxed, my ankles and shins felt great (although a little banged up from my old Adidas punishers), and... I was happy. I HATE running... and these shoes put a smile on my face. I took the speed up and put it on cruise control for a mile... in a fleece bathrobe. I've never felt this good, even when I had a pair of running shoes fit to me in high school. Absolutely amazing. I took the pace down to a walk to cool down, and Dr. Jeckyll showed up to remind me that these things are built for speed.

I couldn't wait to get home and go running. I took them out on the street (again: without orthotics) to get a more rounded perspective on them... and it's the same glowing review: awesome. Not only did I finish my three mile run a little more than 3 minutes faster than usual, but I was also so relaxed that I had enough gas in the tank to go another mile doing 30sec sprint intervals. The faster you move, the happier these things are to reward you: like I said... Sasha Grey. The only gripe I have is because I'm a hybrid heel/forefoot striker, I would like just a little more of the squishy stuff up front.

These are the thing to buy if you're bigger than an underwear model with manorexia. I'm guessing the negative reviews came from smaller dudes trying to wear big boy shoes just because they're rated as cushion +. I'm still going to buy the ASICS when they come out to 1) support the store because their service is awesome and 2) see what all the hype is about. Whichever feels worse is going to become my new pair of outdoor cross-trainers.

The laces on these are so good, I went to the local running store and picked up a set for all my casual shoes. They're amazing on my work boots.

Just remember: buy a half-size larger and be a bigger person. The 1064 is amazing. Get your foot measured (or do it yourself) to determine your arch, width, and length (your feet grow as you get older). This isn't very difficult to do and totally worth the few minutes of effort. If you've got a hard time getting shoes to fit your freak feet and are heavily built, like me, get these.

I'm a neutral runner with high arches, 6'1 and 195 lbs. I was running in the NB 1063 and just got the 1064. I believe that the improvements have been made very wisely. Congrats, New Balance! The 1064 is an excellent shoe regarding cushioning, forefoot flexibility, responsiveness, stability, overall fit, and comfort. I should mention that I also tested the new highly praised Glycerin 8 from Brooks but felt that that the midfoot stability and heel-to-toe transition is not nearly as good as the 1064. This was particularly obvious in long runs. I'm very happy with the 1064 and considering to buy another pair for the 1/2 marathon that I'm training for. Conclusion: there is no perfect shoe for everyone, you simply need to try and find the perfect one for you. And that's why Road Runner Sports' 60 day perfect-fit-guarantee is so invaluable.

I'm 6'2 205 lbs, after years of pain, I had an operation on my left foot for a bone spur and had to have a pin inserted on the outside of my foot. I can't wear any shoe that has a narrow fore-foot, which almost all athletic shoes do. These shoes are perfect, I can wear them all day without any pain. True, the insole isn't that great; however, most factory insoles aren't the best. Its a simple fix; in fact, I do buy better insoles for these, as well as most other shoes I wear. "Blob of a shoe" and "feels heavy"??? To each his own, I used to wear combat boots for a living, these are light enough and feel just fine to me. I wouldn"t wear any other shoe to run or walk in.

Love the shoe they are orthotic friendly with a roomy fit. Lots of cushioning for a 230lb nuetral runner 10-15 miles a week. Their weight is an easy trade off for cushioning. Played professional sports and was mailed many free shoes over the years these are my favorite trainers.

This is the fiorst pair of running shoes I have ever had fitted by a professional. What a difference. These shoes have felt great from mile one. No more calf pain or toe blisters like the Nike predecessor. I can now actually concentrate on running, as I feel nothing but comfort from these shoes.

Ran about 80 miles in these babies and so far no problems. Fit is almost the same as the 1063, was hoping for that. 200lbs, neutral gait. Lighter runners might want to try the NB 758 or Asics Cumulus.

First off, I am not an avid runner yet. I am still only doing 3 miles at about 13 minutes a mile. I have a long way to go.
That said, I am a bigger runner, and one of the reasons I never ran before was because of my weight - it was just too much for continuous nonstop exercise. At 220 at 5'10'', and all the weight in the belly, lugging around an extra 50lbs on a small frame takes it's toll.

I have previously used Mizuno Wave Rider's, and LOVED them. I have a high arch and neutral gait and tend to push off on the outside of the forefoot, so the wave system was great at promoting a smooth heel to toe transition and thusly made my gait more efficient.

I switched to the NB1064s to gain more comfort in the heel strike while I am carrying around the extra weight. I was wary going from the Mizuno's to the NB's, but I'm completely satisfied in the switch. The heel to toe motion in the NB's is not as good as the Mizuno's, and I don't feel they are as efficient, but the heel strike is comfortable, and high speeds feel better as well.

I would not recommend these to a smaller runner who is avid, but for a bigger runner or those neutral gait high arch runners that love cushioned shoes, the NB's are perfect.

The Mizuno Wave Riders are still my favorite, but the NB1064's are a great great shoe, and I will be wearing them until I lose some lbs.

I have used this shoe for 5 weeks / 200km. The shoe is flexible with great toe box room. Great feeling through the heel. I previously ran with Kayano. I have now order 2nd pair 1064 for racing.

Actaully went back to a NB store to get refitted. The 1064 shoe is great. I am a larger runner 6', 250lbs + and this shoe has a great cushion and very comfortable to wear. Thinking about getting another pair. Love the 4E width that NB offers.

The shoes are great for someone with a high arch and wide foot. They were a little too roomy for me. The cushioning in the shoe is good could be better for a runner who runs a lot of miles. However, still pretty comfortable shoes for your average runner. What I loved most about the shoes is the snug heal fit that NB has that was a really good feature of this shoe!

I think these are as good as the 1063's but with a little more cushioning. I'm about 185 lbs and these have worked great on two long training runs. I like the roomy feeling in the toe box.

I use the 1064's for distance (half marathon) training and racing. I'm 51 years old and log 20-25 miles per week. I'm on my 5th pair of shoes in this series, and just bought an extra pair of 1064's to have available when these wear out. I'm getting about 250 miles per pair before my legs tell me it's time for a new pair.

Even after they wear out for training, they still look and feel great for casual wear with jeans, shorts, or sweats. Check them out - I've been very pleased.

I am 5'9", 165 lbs. I am an avid runner. For the past few years the perfect shoe for me has been the NB1062 & NB1063, so I only assumed the NB1064 would be great too. I still love the shoe but I do not like that they narrowed the toe box area. My outside 3 toes are soar after running and I am now returning them to find something else. I hate this but I don't know why they changed it.

Been running in the Nimbus and have had some issues. Haven't tried from New Balance I've tried in a while. Tried the 1064 and have had them for about a week. Room enough for my toes with my Thorlo socks. Great smooth cushioning. Not too soft.

I run 30-40 miles a week and really like these shoes a lot. Very comfortable with very good support and cushioning. Same model I'll be using in the NYC marathon this year. (in 4 days!)

I have worn this line of NB shoes for several years. They are very good shoes for someone like me who has a fairly high arch and needs a neutral shoe. I tend to hit straighter and don't wear out the outside of the heels as badly. I just wish New Balance didn't feel compelled to change the style/trim/number what seems like at least every 6 months. Recommendation to buy 1/2 size up is on the money. I was hesitant about buying a 9 when I wear an 8 or 8-1/2 street shoe, but a 9 fits perfectly.

Although designed for a a runner with high arches, like me, the 1064 displayed two clashing personalities. Running with a longer stride length leading to a more angled heel strike, I found that my forefoot clumped down heavily, and my right arch ached slightly after a 2.5-mile run. (I'm 5'10" and 160 lbs.) On the other hand, with a shorter stride length and shallower heel-strike angle, the shoe felt comfortable and delightfully cushioned, and I had no complaints after the same 2.5-mile run. My overall impression is that the geometry of the shoe is designed for average stride lengths, but may not work well for the runner who likes to stretch it out for more speed or a more aggressive work-out.

I run twice per week. The shoes feel great out of the box. Follow instructions and order 1/2 size up from your usual size. The shoes provide a great deal of stability and support without the loss of comfort.

I probably overpaid for thie 1064 because I am using it as an everyday casual shoe rather than for running. It is very comfortable. There is irony in my purchase. I was looking for a casual shoe to do daily activities. I wanted the shoe to be current. So I visited a New Balance retail store. [...] I instantly liked the shoe. But the price of over $140 was too high for me. I asked for a discoun. [...] I visited Roadrunner site and found the same shoe for $20 less. In closing I am very happy with the 1064 bought 2 pair initially, then order a 3rd pair recently.

This is a very comfortable shoe for running but not for other activities like walking. Why? It has a very tall/high heel which is great for landing on your heels when running. But when standing and walking, you feel like you are wearing heels and so your weight shifts to the balls of your feet. I do not like that at all. Now, I have replaced the insoles that came with this shoe with better ones (more cushioning) so that does add to the problem. I will most likely not buy another pair once these wear out.
