light shoe, light on cushioning

OK, first up I'm a true blue ASICS fan. I've run long distances in their Gel Nimbus since the Nimbus 7, they are great shoes for my feet! I bought these to see if they were any good, and for an alternative to the Nimbus. These are quite a different shoe, for a start they are lighter. The upper doesnt mould as well to my feet, and they move around a bit more while running. The big difference is the cushioning - it feels thinner and stiffer. It doesn't absorb foot-strike as well, and I can feel the stones under the shoe. My forefeet ache after about 10km. They feel more like a medium-distance shoe. Also the internal bracing is more flexible, they move more underfoot. This I like, but I suspect my feet will tire faster on long runs. Summary - better for fast medium distance runners than marathoners.

Not the 1080v2

2

I really liked the 1080v2. They felt pretty natural, w/ the cushioning needed to complete longer runs such as the marathon. I've always had trouble finding comfortable footwear being that I have wide feet (4e). I was excited when I saw that the 1080v3 was being released and that they had a sharp look to them as well. Well lets just say they are not the same shoe as the v2, and not for the better. The ankle area is way too snug, and feels like there is extra padding that is forcing my feet to strike off balance. The shoes are light and well cushioned, but after around 25 miles logged in them I now have sore calves, knees and shin splints. I'm not sure what all was tweaked since the 1080v2, but the 1080v3 has let me down and now I feel I am back to the drawing board to find something new.

Solid Shoe

I have literally thousands of miles in multiple pairs of 1080v1, the v1 was comfortable and wore like iron. The v2 and v3 are not to be confused with the v1. Even though they share the same name they are entirely different shoes, the v1 had a 12mm offset, and the v2 and v3 had 8mm offset with light weight materials. Overall the v2 was not quite right for me, they rode a little funny between the front and back of the shoe. Overall though I like the v3, super light shoe, and feels better cushioned than the v2 did. I have logged 384 miles in them so far. They are nearing the end unfortunately however. The v1 lasted a lot better. Overall the v3 is a good shoe, I suspect the tradeoff is weight vs wear and durability. I just really wish they lasted longer. I will check back in with a final milage when they get replaced.

NB1080 V3 & V4

3

I run 4 miles a day at and below 8 minute miles. I found the shoe to be a full size too small, poor arch support, a very narrow toe box that instead of accomodating my big toe that points straight out from my foot and instead the toe box acutely angles inward onto my toe causing it to be pushed against by the shoe, very uncomfortable if I bought the size I usually buy. I wear a 12 in my last NB 1225s and had to go up to a 13. Left shoe is now way too big since my right foot is larger than my left. I am having to over compensate and toe in as I run to avoid knee soreness in the inside of both knees.

Phenomenal

5

I have been using a version of the 1080s for years. If New Balance stops making this in a 13B I will no longer be able to run. I have narrow feet, high arch, neutral gait and 200 lbs. I've tried other brands and was injured in the first mile. These are perfect. My V2s were worn out and I just got my V3's today. Right out of the box they have that old shoe feel, like slippers. The V3s don't seem as stiff when new as the V2s, no break in needed. Did 4 miles and felt great. Best shoe ever IMHO. I might even wear them to bed. I guess I need to save up for a couple more pairs before NB makes then extinct like they do every 2 months.

Great shoe right out of the box!

5

I ran in New Balance for years then switched to Saucony for a few years. After purchasing a new pair of Saucony ProGrid Ride 4s, I had to return them to RRS after just two runs. They were not stable and my lower back ached after running in them. I went back to these NBs after trying them on at the store. They fit perfect and were much more stable than the Saucony. In fact, they were so comfortable I didn't even break them in prior to my first run. No back aches with these. New Balance still makes a great shoe!

New shoe model after 12 years

3

I ran in the NB 878 model for more than 10 years. When it was discontinued, I was very distraught. This is my second model after so many years of worry free comfort. While this model is very different, it is adequate. It is more light weight and I've had to buy a second pair after only a couple hundred miles. The fit feels more loose and free because of the mesh uppers, and there is not as much fore foot cushioning as the old trainers. But all in all, I'm adapting because I don't have another other choice.

Very Good Nuetral Cushion Shoe

4

Just ran 5 miles in these shoes. I would rate them as very good. They provide a soft ride and have a comfortable interior. They tend to make me run a little flat footed. Not a bad thing, just an observation. I definitely mid-foot strike with these. It feels like the shoes makes my weight shift toward the outside of the shoe a tick. I really like these shoes, but I think the Asics Gel Nimbus is a better all around shoe.

Meh.

2

Was at my local RRS store that just opened near me, did the shoe dog thing, and these were one of the shoes they had in my size. I'm a forefoot striker, and these just didn't have enough forefoot cushion. These are fine if you are a heel striker, but I think NB sacrificed cushioning for weight reduction. Then again, I'm 6'4" 260 and built like a linebacker, so for someone smaller the cushioning may be adequate.

Great ride!

5

I have been using the NB890V3 which is a great trainer, but needed more cushion on my 10+ mile runs so I purchased the NB1080V3 and so far love the shoe. I've put approx 25 miles on them and no knee issues after any of the runs. I will update again as I log more miles on the shoe. I do recommend as appears the shoe will be durable and sustain the cushioning.

Good shoe, but the sole wears down fast

3

I run 3-5 times a week, 10-20 miles/week. I need wide shoes, so am limited to a very few brands and models. For an extra wide, neutral road running shoe, this one is really good - except the sole wears down really quickly. Haven't noticed other reviewers with the same issue, so maybe just me. Otherwise, highly recommend these shoes.

Better Than v2

5

I had both of the earlier versions of this model. For me, the v3 is noticeably lighter, still has the great cushioning of the 1080 series, and laces up more comfortably than the v2. I do 5 miles on a treadmill at a variety of speeds and elevations and all are better on the v3 than the v2 of the 1080. Great neutral plus cushioned day to day shoe.

My fav shoe so far

4

This is my second pair of 1080v3 shoes and I love em. I run 4 miles every other day and long runs(8-13 miles for me) on the weekends. I was a dedicated Nimbus 12,13,14 fan until I tried these New Balance neutral plus 1080v3's. Light, very breathable, and sure footed and they really fit my running style.

Great Update!

5

I have never worn New Balance before the 1080v3 but now I think I found my new brand. This shoe is very comfortable and fits much better than my old (Asics) shoe. I never thought I'd like to run in New Balance shoes but this shoe totally changed my mind, I would recommend anyone that needs a Neutral Plus shoe try this shoe.

run or walk right out of the box

4

I walk 5 miles a day. Out of the Box ready. Wears out a little fast around little toe. Plenty of tread left. 8 months since new. 1200 miles in them, I guess that's good. I would buy them again. 4e width. Wish the nicer colors were available in 4e.

Good Cushion for Distance

3

Good cushioning for long road runs. Very comfortable. Didn't have any pinch spots. Nice and breathable. Outsole seems very durable. I ran a lot of trails in these too. For me this shoe ran a half size too big. The sides seemed to blow out pretty quickly.

This is the most comfortable shoe I have ever put on. My feet have multiple problems and this shoe seems to please them all.Did 10 miles right out of the box, could not have done that with the V2 or prior models.

Best shoe in years!

5

Since I am not able to run anymore, I use these shoes for walking. I have worn New Balance shoes for years, and this is the best shoe (light weight and extremely comfortable) since the 829 from over ten years ago!

Seems smaller than v2

4

Very comfortable shoe. I am a big runner (6'7", 210 lbs) and these provide great support. I have been wearing NB size 15 shoes for years, but these feel small. Not sure if my feet are growing or if the shoe is smaller.

I run 6 days a week, these shoes were great right out of the box. Very comfortable. I am more of a traditionalist, so I don't really care for the flashy colors.

As the other reviews said, these can be used in races the day you get them. I felt no issues in the first run with them; a PR 5k on a chilly Denver morning.
