FantomFit: A skeletally engineered upper that provides ultralight support and fit
I went into the NB store to purchase 1080's, and they were getting a new model and were out as they had already shipped back their old make. I ended up with a pair of these Revlites instead . I used them on a chat trail for their first 15 miles or so and thought they seemed okay. When I made my first road run with them on pavement (which was a 12 miler) I realized how much I was going to hate them and how quickly they were going to wear out. Of course I expected less use out of the revlite, but It became uncomfortable to run in after the first 100 miles was in in it. It just seemed like the cushioning properties of the rubber weren't holding up in the midfoot on the road runs. It was a much faster feeling shoe; I will give it that. The shoe runs true to width; however, the toe cage is cut closer to the toes purposefully. If you're used to the feel of other NB shoes like the 1080 and their trail shoe makes, you might not like this. I really hated it as I occasionally am missing some toe nails. This would be an ideal shoe for the gym and for smaller runs or 10ks. I think it's a horrible choice for a higher miliage runner. It's probably designed to be more of a race day shoe, but I found with the smaller toe cage I would not care to use it for a marathon either but would opt for the 1080 instead even though this shoe is much lighter.
Not really a D width
I consistently wear a D width in my running shoes because I have a wide forefoot and a narrow heel. I have several pairs of New Balance shoes and particularly wear the 1080 on a consistent basis. This was my first time trying an 890, even though I was assured by both New Balance and Road Runner Sports that the 890 was in the same line as a 1080 (neutral) and appropriate for me. When I received the 890, I was very happy with the look, and the shoe was lightweight. The cushion was less than my 1080s but still adequate. It took me a few runs to realize that my feet felt sore and crampy after running in the 890s and that it was the shoes as opposed to the difficulty of the workout or length of the run. I compared my 1080s to the 890s and was shocked to find that the 890s were probably 3/4 inch more narrow than my 1080s. The length of the shoe was fine. I chatted with a Road Runner Sports rep, and we both agreed that going up a full size or even a half size would make them too long. If you a truly a wide width, I would not go with these shoes. These are more for people with normal width feet. The regular width might be more appropriate for narrow feet. I was disappointed in New Balance!
The only negative I have is the sizing. I wear a sz 8 regular shoe and always wear a 8.5 in my running shoe. When the website recommends 1/2 size up, I never know if that is recommended from your regular shoe size? I ordered 8.5 and they were very small. I sent back and ordered a 9. They were still snug, but I decided to keep. I would probably go with a 9.5 if I had to do it over again.
The shoe itself is wonderful. I run in minimal type shoes, but needed more cushion for roads. It is super flexible in the fore and mid-foot, allowing me to still have a natural stride. There is plenty of cushion in the heel, but does not get in the way like bulkier shoes. These are light weight, but still a high mileage workhorse. I also noticed that I am running 20-30 sec faster per mile with these shoes. It has been years since I've tried New Balance, they used to be heavy and stiff. I am very pleased with these shoes.
Great feeling on day 1 with 10 miler
My NB WR1400v2 wore out way too quickly but I loved that feeling NB gave me after spending so many shoes from other brands. I wanted to give this pair a try. Day 1, I logged in 10 miles with them and no blister, no uncomfortableness, just right feeling. Today, Day 2 of using them, I ran 13.1. I don't have a definite answer to my PR, but these shoes run faster than WR1400v2, I think. Compared to that pair, this pair has less cushioning. I believe it is also the way I run, these didn't give me 'dragging on the ground' feeling at all. I was a little worried since NB tends to wear out quicker than other brands, but I must say, these didn't need a break-in period at all. Which was a plus deal when I didn't have much time before the race day. It is very light and this pair are very breathable thus a little cold in the colder climate. I will definitely go for another pair.
Solid, stable lightweight shoe
This is a good solid shoe that is very lightweight, yet is surprisingly stable. The cushioning is distributed well, although I personally prefer more in the forefoot. The tongue is way overstuffed although it didn't bother me. The biggest negative was the very shallow toe box, which tended to beat my toes up too much. If you don't mind a shallow toe box and want something light, but with decent cushion, this is a good shoe to consider. The flexibility was very good as well.

This shoe is by far my favorite shoe
This shoe is extremely light weight and super cushiony. I bought this shoe for the gym but ended taking it with me to Chicago where I walked 5+ miles a day.
Within having the shoe 60 days, the sole peeled off in the corner. I returned it and bought another pair because I am *hoping* it was a minor defect and won't happen again. I contemplate buying MORE of this pair because I'm worried they will be discontinued and the next version won't be this great!

Some shoes of this model run small
I've had 3-4 pairs of the 890v4. One pair seemed to run about 1/2 size smaller than the others; the rest have been true to size. For some reason, the grey/yellow ones seem to run smaller than the blue/pink.
Otherwise, I love these shoes. They do wear out faster than normal (outer rubber sole peels off), but for me this is a plus since it helps me not run in worn out shoes. Only downside is you can't reuse them as casual shoes for long.

I went back and forth a few times with the sizing on these. I am usually a 9.5-10 regular width. I finally wound up with the perfect fit with these shoes in a 10.5 and wide. I alternate between Nike Vomeros and Vibrams, and I was looking for something in between--lightweight but with a bit of cushioning. These are AMAZING. I wore them for a quick 4 miles right out of the box and they were super comfortable.
They messed this one up
I've been through several pairs of 890 v2 & v3. This is a completely different fit; they should have renamed the shoe. Why did they mess with the performance fit of the first three versions? This is a crinkly, noisy mess of a shoe. Gone is the slipper feel! Gone is the full ground contact. If the first 3 versions fit you, don't waste your time. This is another sloppy shoe for fat feet. Lets hope the nb1400 isn't a disaster too. I'm so mad at you, New Balance!
Runner for life
Awesome running sneakers!!
I run about five times a week, averaging 5-7 miles each run. I used to wear Nike, but the last three sneakers I bought for running have been New Balance and I am hooked.
Order these shoes as they suggest, a half size up. Overall they are super comfortable and although they're lightweight, they provide great support.
Would highly recommend!
Great Improvements to the 890 v4
This is a perfect shoe to accommodate my high arches. It provides plenty of flexibility for neutral runners. The v4 is a little wider at the front of the foot than the v3, thus more comfortable for most feet, including mine. Great cushioning! Be sure to try this shoe 1/2 size larger than most others.
MJ the Cross-Trainer
great for faster runs and MLRs!
Love this shoe! I have high arches, but pronate in one foot, so I use a 3/4 insert with this shoe. With that said, this shoe lets my foot land naturally, and helps with keeping good form. Its lights and runs well on fast runs, and runs up to 14 miles. I haven't tried to take it longer but I am tempted!
Love this shoe!
Bought these the other day and have run in them twice. I am in love with them. I used to run in "barefoot" type shoes but had to switch to something with more cushioning. Love these because they are just as light as my "barefoot" type shoes but cushion the impact!
I run 30 miles a week both on the treadmill and on the road the durablity is great (I have 200 miles on the first pair) and the light weight makes them a good long run shoe and a good race shoe.
Love this shoe from the first step
I loved this shoe from my first mile in them .I was looking for a light trainer that I could wear on long runs up to 24 miles to track workouts .This shoes fits . I run 80 to 100 miles a week.
Unbeatable neutral cushion shoe
890v4 has wider toe box than previous versions, which is a welcome change for me. I sized up a full size from my normal, non running shoe size and these fit perfectly.
True to size, lightweight some cushioning but not too much. I run about 10 -15 miles a week and so far I have found these to be comfortable.
Like walking on air !
I bought these for my daily walking exercise. They are very comfortable and light weight. Like walking on air.
A good pair of shoes so far!!!!
Used for walking and at the gym
They are light weight and convertible
