I'm writing this in the hope that someone in RRS and NB is listening!!!! The 1220s remains THE ONLY shoe that has ever worked for me, period. I've had almost 20 pairs over the years, Mens 10.5D. approx 450miles training and many marathons without injury, blister, worry. I bought a stash of them 5 years ago but it got depleted eventually and now I can't find them for any money on [@] etc. 1220s gotta be one of the best all time runners shoe EVER!! So NB, please please tell us WHY you aren't making these anymore? I would pay $150.00USD a pair no problem and why? Because I KNOW THEY WORK - Simple. For a distance runner that's what counts, not style/looks!!! I have now been thru the NB1224, NB993, Brooks, Asics and various "similar" shoes all nowhere close to this baby. SO frustrating! Please please please bring it back and listen to your customers!!!!

This shoe used to be great. Then they started making them in China and my mileage drop from 400 miles per pair to 170 miles per pair. I believe New Balance doesn't even make these anymore? They have sold the rights to another company? Its disappointing when a shoe company ruins a good thing. Some stats on me - I weigh 225 lbs and run mostly marathons. Right now I'm looking for my next shoe, but have had no luck on a replacement.

I have run just over 10,500 miles and 22 marathons in the past 5 years, and have gone through 22 pairs of 1220s, and have another 10 new pairs in the closet. I number and track the mileage on every pair of shoes and I average 300-325 miles before I retire a pair. I also run on multiple Asics, Adidas, Brooks, and Mizuno shoes, but these are consistently the best shoe for me and only shoe I wear for marathons. Six feet, 175 lbs.

To the reviewer complaining of the 'cat pee smell'. I've heard of that problem. It was isolated to a shipment of glue that they got. Once the glue got wet, a terrible 'cat pee' smell resulted. You're right, nothing makes it go away. The issue has been fixed. It had effected a few different models, not just this one. Every model that used that shipment of glue was effected. But no more problems now. Different glue. It was just used around late 2005 early 2006.

I did a lot of reviewing of shoes before I purchased the 1220's on this website. The 1220's rated fairly well. I cannot say that I'm totally impressed with them though. I had a pair of NB 643 before the 1220's. The 1220's have a narrower toes box than the 643's and consequently had to return my first pair as they were too small. Even after I have sized up, I still think the toe box is giving me problems as I am developing terrible blisters on my second toe to the right of my big toe. The toe box on the 1220's is not manufactured from a breathable mesh -- like the 643's -- so if you sweat a lot like me you may have problems with your toes developing blisters. My feet get very hot as well because they aren't breathable. I may return these shoes.

I own three pairs of this rare shoe. It is the best all around shoe and cannot be improved because of a perfect, yet simple fit. No bells and whistles needed to make this a great running shoe.

I have very flat feet and pronate, so substantial orthotics and no other shoe will handle them, without breaking. They were the first running shoe that I bought in Widths and they have been the best value. The other 1220-line shoes last only a few training sessions! What a waste they've been. I don't know what I'll use when my stock of 1220's is all gone...

Excellent trainer. I'm 6'0 and weight 155. I found these shoes great for marathon training, when you don't really care about the extra weight, and want the extra stability and cushion. I normally have fit problems, but these were among the very few pairs where I had no hot spots, and no blistering. (Of course, that means they'll redesign them). They lasted about 350 miles, and looked good, but I never take shoes farther than that. I love these shoes.

I have been running in this shoe for about eight years and have used about five pairs per year and have never had a problem. I run anywhere from 50 to 70 miles per week during this time. The only drawback is their weight which can turn to an advantage when you put on flats for racing. When I change to another shoe that is lighter I run into problems. I am 5'5" and 145 and slightly pronated and the shoes last for about 550 mi. I hope they never stop making this shoe.The anonymous rater above must work for asics!

These shoes hurt my feet. They have Hardly any Cushioning so my feet ache even after a 2 mile walk! I just bought the asics 2140 and they are so much better than these.

these running shoes are specially built for runners 180 lbs and over. Combine these with 3/4 graphite inserts and running becomes an actual joy !!! I ran my police agility exam in these and dropped two minutes off my time because of how well my feet felt !! Go NEW BALANCE !!!!!!!!!!!

5'11", 215lbs, 12-15 mi/wk.....What happened to this shoe since last year? The pair of 1220s I bought last year was great (approx 300 miles), but the recent pair I just bought is completely shot at around 160 miles......no cushioning, soles worn out, and shin splints.....AT 160 MILES!! Time to try something new.

I have been wearing NB for a long time, and this is by far the best shoe I've ever had. I am a heavy heel striker, over pronator and have a slsight rolling action in my nknees, so cushioning and stability is a must for me. The 1220 delivers better than anything else...991s, 998s, 1300s, M2000s. I hope NB has the sense to leave this shoe alone and keep making it, as the later versions are not nearly as comfortable.

My brother just bought a pair of these shoes (Jan 2008). The first time they got wet, the terrible cat pee smelled occurred. Nothing makes it go away. I strongly recommend that people not purchase these shoes.

The shoes are great, but they start to stink. I have been a NewBalance wearer (wide feet) for 20+ years. They used to last 18mths, hen I was running. Up to 3yrs when I was just using them for casual. Now after 6mths the sole, not the shoe, the plastics/rubber in the sole starts to stink like cat pee. Nothing will remove the smell.

This is my 4th pair of 1220, The rollerball in the shoe keeps me walking and runnig in a straight line. Because of my pronation ankles and knees don't hurt as much. Something to get use to, and they are very good
