Product Description:

It's true, less is more with the new Free 4.0. On a 1-to-10 scale the Free 5.0 was half-way to barefoot. But if you really want even more "down to earth" strength training for your feet, then try the 4.0 to get as close as possible to barefoot.

Features & Benefits:

  • Transpan inner upper: Hugs foot and keeps it in place
  • Screen mesh outer upper: Provides additional support, enhanced by a TPU weld along lateral side
  • Stretch synthetic strap: Allows you to get in and out of the shoe with ease, locks foot down for a secure ride
  • Phylite midsole: Cut into laterally and longitudinally flex grooves for the most flexible midsole ever made by Nike
  • Raised waffles in outsole: Provide additional traction and cushioning
  • BRS 1000 lugs: Added durability in high wear heel areas

  • Predecessor Product Type:  Free 5.0

Comments about Womens Nike Free 4.0 Running Shoe:

I'm not an athlete. I have foot pain from an injury & I'm most comfortable barefoot. So Frees were a relief--I wore them constantly.
The Velcro straps on my pair were poorly designed. There were two across the top of the shoe and one behind the heel. None of them did much to adjust the fit, & they all came loose a lot. When the Velcro got dirty it wouldn't fasten.
I also thought the Free design was uninspired; the clumsy Gumby-shaped fasteners don't help. Why not a streamlined look? Why not add a tabi-boot-like split toe for extra foot flexion?
Much of the shoe is made of stretchy mesh. The mesh behind the heel rent and tore w/in weeks. I tried to sew it, but it wasn't durable enough to hold stitches or Shoe Goo. To fix it, I would have had to sew a patch of cloth directly to the inside of the sole. More recently, the mesh on the top/side has torn. I think a more durable material would work better.
Very comfortable, but flimsy & hard to repair. Are the newer ones better?

Comments about Womens Nike Free 4.0 Running Shoe:

Love everything about this shoes except the very front where the toes hit the front. My toes often rub against where the meshing meets the rubber so have to choose socks carefully-however I'll never go back to regular runners after using the nike free-even did my personal best half marathon with them.

Comments about Womens Nike Free 4.0 Running Shoe:

This is the best running shoe I have ever tried. I have tried all of the Nike Free brand shoes over the past year or so and like them all, so I think this is just an improved version. I don't know how popular they are... I just hope Nike keeps making them.

Comments about Womens Nike Free 4.0 Running Shoe:

I did all my running in the 5.0s (35+ mpw) and they were great except the heel would rip, so I went through a few pairs. I've bought the 4.0's and have been running every other day for 3 weeks in them and they are much better. You cant tell by looking at the pictures but on the 4.0 the heel is has a cloth material in the same area where the 5s have a hard plastic. I think this change has made them less prone to rip at the base of the heel as they do on the 5s.
