Men's MONTRAIL® MOUNTAIN MASOCHIST® :: As you can tell by the name, the men's Montrail® Mountain Masochist is not for wusses. That doesn't mean it's not comfortable. It just means that what you can do in this trail running shoe will leave most other runners in a puddle of blood, mud and tears. Enjoy exceptional fit, super-lightweight performance, plenty of breathability, and a tread design a mountain goat would envy. Winner of an Outside magazine 2009 Gear of the Year award. 10.8 ounces
I'm an avid trail runner, running about 30 miles a week, all on trails, and racing at least once per month. I run rocky technical trails, muddy trails, wet trails and snow. I used this shoe most of last year. It's held up very well, great rock protection, good traction, drains well. This shoe has what I would call light pronation control. It does not have much cushioning but I have found it just about right between cushioning and rock protection for trails. This is definitely a good trail runner. I just ordered my second pair to start this years racing season.

Nice Trail Shoe
Interesting combination from Montrail. I've run in a number of their models over the years and prefer the wide and tall toe box for ultras and long, rocky training runs. This shoe has a medium thickness midsole and low profile, is quite flexible, and has moderate cushioning. The full foot rock plate seems to dull the impact of sharp rocks, but for trails with miles of rock gardens, I'd want something with a bit stiffer shank. Excellent outsole with, IMHO, the best grip and traction available. A very breathable shoe with what should prove to be good drainage. Like others, I use a SOLE insole with more cushion and arch than the stock. I always buy Montrails a full size larger than my true size. I'll definitely buy another pair or two of this one.
Great Trail Show
These shoes are very good on the trails. They seem rugged, they protect my feet from rocks and roots, and they dry out quickly. I am just getting started with my second pair, but my first pair has delivered over 600 miles and I am still getting occasional running use before I demote them to yard work shoes. I do not recommend these for the use on roads, as they do not offer much road cushioning. I use these exclusively on trails, and have been very happy with them. They are a step up from the Montrail Streak which I wore previously and got much lower mileage before they felt uncomfortable.
Awesome trail shoe
I have used these shoes for everything from long marathon training runs, to a half marathon race through about the toughest terrain imaginable. These shoes are simply amazing! They provide great cushioning, drain well, and are tough as nails. I still don't know how Montrail was able to keep them so lightweight. When my current pair wears out, I will certainly buy another. Give these a try. You won't be disappointed.

Excellent grippy trail shoe
Love these shoes. Most comfortable and best performing trail shoes I've had. I have slightly wide feet,so I have been buying NB's to get the wide size. Wasn't sure if these would fit, but the wide toe box is fine.
After wearing these the NB's feel like they're made of concrete. The Montrails are light and flexible, great feel for the trail, but still with enough rock protection in the soles. Good sticky rubber treads that work well on rock and dirt. Remains to be seen how they wear, but even if they wear out fast, I would probably just buy another pair.
Best Trail Shoe EVER!
I used these right out of the box for my first 50 Mile Ultra, the Twin Peaks 50/50 [@] in the Santa Ana Mtns. It was a tough course with lots of climbing, stream crossings, snow, and mud. These shoes provided great traction and dried very quickly after going through the numerous rushing streams. I replaced the stock insert with a RRS Cush Runner and it worked great. Best of both worlds, stability from the shoe and cushioning from the insole. These shoes fit my foot like a glove, there was no slippage whatsoever. They held up very well and helped me to a time of 12:38:57 and a 9th place finish!
great light weight trail shoe
Montrail has hit a home run with this shoe. Lightweight, comfortable and rugged. I run almost exclusively on trails in New Mexico. Whether in the Bosque(Woods) or on mountain trails these shoes have been my best purchase, I plan on getting another pair soon.
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Bought a pair of these 2 years ago at an outdoor store in Utah. Loved them, very comfortable and fantastic grip on the trail. Wanted to get another pair, and was delighted to find the EXACT same shoe here. Ordered a pair to check size, and was blown away by the comfort. Now I'm ordering a third pair and putting them on the shelf for the day when my current set gets worn out. As advised, they DO need to be ordered a half size larger than chart indicates.
This Shoe Can Take It!
I have been looking for a trail shoe that can take the rigors of the technical trail and this is it! I love running in my Montrail Masochists. They can take the sharp rocks and the miles too. They are flexible, provide great support, great traction, have a great fit and are comfortable. Make sure to buy a full size up.
