Newton runner from day one. The upgade with new low profile and closed mesh to keep rocks out will allow you to use this shoe on trail as well as pavement. I am a 58 year old triathlete and ultra runner and this product by far is the best I have had the please to run in.

Background: I have been doing the breast cancer walks for 10 years and this is at least my 15th different shoe. I have used several models of New Balance, Brooks, Nike, Reebok, Salomon and Saucony. I have tested the VIP return policy to the point of embarrassment. I have learned much about walking long distances. I'm 70 years of age so my body is more responsive to irritations. I use an orthotic in all of my shoes, and WrightSock II socks, the double layer thicker ones. I usually walk at least one 20 mile walk a month usually more.
About the shoe: I was impressed that I felt no cramping of the usual muscles in my legs and hips on any of the days I have used them. I have walked ovder 20 miles in 90degree weather and even the 'normal' place to get a blister didnt show up. I think because you are off of the pavement with the rails on the soles and the breath-ability of the shoe. I love the light weight, for long walks it is so beneficial.
I now have my new favorite walking shoe by far!
Oh, and I LOVE the color! I get plenty of compliments on the bright yellow, now I wear a lot of bright yellow to match my shoes.

The reason why I am giving these shoes only 3 stars is because I truly believe that Newtons are meant for transitioners only, and not for runners who are already into barefoot running. But to Newtons defense, I think their target audience generally is the transitioners however this review is based off of my own personal experience as a minimalist runner.

Now, with that in mind, I have been running barefoot "style" for the past year. My go-to shoes are the New Balance minimus zero and the Brooks pureconnect. I ran the Las Vegas half-marathon in the Brooks pureconnect and couldn't be happier with the results. I was however looking for a wider shoe with MORE cushioning which is why I bought the Newton Distance S. The problem is, Newtons in my opinion are designed to help heelstrikers transition to a more midfoot/forefoot strike. They do this by way of their lug system which extrudes from the bottom of the shoe forcing you to strike your forefoot first before the heel. For those who are already forefoot/midfoot strikers however the Newtons do not feel natural because of the lug system, and running with them gives you the sensation that you have a rock stuck in the bottom of your shoes or that you are constantly running on uneven pavement. I have experienced increased fatigue and minor aches and pains due to the lug system which i have never experienced before with my brooks pureconnect or my new balance minimus.

Bottom line is, after running for a month with the Newtons I have come to the conclusion that these shoes are probably great for those heel-strikers who have never run barefoot "style" before and would like to transition over. For those who are already adept at running with a forefoot/midfoot strike, stick with your favorite barefoot "style" shoes and keep looking. I also would recommend the Saucony Kinvara 2 for those minimalist runners looking for more cushioning and more width.
