Five low-profile forefoot lugs: Provide superior impact-zone cushioning and a smooth, stable ride
I bought these after wearing Saucony Kinvaras for my last ten or so distance races. While I love the Kinvaras for 1/2 marathons, I found that I had a really difficult time recovering after I ran a full in them. I had knee and IT band issues that I had never had before. While I don't know if it was a byproduct of the shoes, I thought it would be a good time to try a different brand - so I used one of those "shoe selectors" and the Newton Energy were recommended. I was a little worried about the lugs, but I didn't notice them at all - either they compliment my current running style, or they are not big enough to notice (they do seem to be less obtrusive than on some of the other Newtons, so maybe these are good for Newton Newbies). I did not follow the advice of Newton - I ran 3 miles in them the first time, and then 7, without any issues. So far the most miles I've put on them in a go are 8.5 and they've been very comfortable. Planning to keep training in them (I still swap in my loads of Kinvaras, for low and mid distance) and hope to wear them in my upcoming marathon.
I do have a tiny bit of roominess in the heel - I bought 6.5 and I think I'm pretty true to size (my Kinvaras are all 6.5). I have wider feet, too, and they are less snug than my Kinvaras are - in a good way. I didn't feel like I needed to break these in at all - they fit really well right out of the box. I can see why some people with thinner feet my find them a little roomy though.

Hurt My Feet
These look, feel and run like I am wearing little canoes on my feet. They are narrow and stiff. They hurt the balls of my feet and numb them. I tried different lacing and insoles. I am already a mid-foot striker and like the newton distance but was hoping the lesser lugs would be good (plus the distance toe-box is not quite wide enough for me, not that the energy toe box is any wider). I went for four 5-6 mile runs in these and cannot keep trying. I read yesterday that the lugs on prior Newtons are 3/4 rubber and the rest filler, the energy lugs are full rubber-probably why they hurt the balls of my feet. On the positive side the material they use in the sole does feel like it gives energy return. Sorry about the scathing review, I really like the concept behind Newton shoes and have at times felt fast in them, but I need to find a different shoe. Thanks for your great service RRS!!!
First Newton experience
This was my first time trying a Newton Running shoe, and overall I've been really enjoying them. My previous two pairs of running shoes were both Nike Frees. I found the Newton Energy NR to have a similar low profile to the Nike Free, but the Newtons are slightly more durable and I expect I will get more mileage out of them. The lugs felt a big awkward at first, but running in them feels much more natural than walking. My first run I did feel a bit of a burning under the ball of my foot, but every run since then has been comfortable. I use these shoes for my daily runs (15-20 miles total a week) and 5k, 10k, and half-marathon races. I went up a half size in this shoe, as recommended.
If you wear neutral running shoes and like the Nike Free's, then I would definitely recommend giving these a try as a more durable alternative.
First pair of Newtons
My first pair of Newtons and so far, I like them! I seriously need to work on my running form, so I was hoping Newtons would help. They do help you move to a mid foot landing and a faster cadence, however, it tough to run at slower speeds in these. They are super lightweight and very comfortable...no rubbing or tight spots. Haven't had them long enough to assess durability, but I'm pretty rough on shoes...wondering whether they will hold up to my beating. Great shoe to try Newtons at a more reasonable price.
LOVE LOVE LOVE
This is a great sneaker for those wishing to go from traditional runners to Newton's or lightweight runners. I have been eyeing up Newton's for over a year. I was able to be part of the test group on these and absolutely love them. I have no aches or pains running n these. I am a neutral runner who has been loyal to asic's Gel nimbus. I still rotate between the asic's and these Newton's. These fit a bit small, I sized up a whole size but could probably due with a half size.
This is a great new shoe from Newton! I've been trying to transition into the Motion with some rough patches. In a different brand that was killing my knees and finally this came out! It feels rather soft when just walking around but I've found it feels firmer when running. This holds up very well for me on long runs, the longest so far being 8 miles. My feet are really particular and these are perfect!
I bought these shoes trying to get cushioning on my long runs (I usually wear minimalist shoes) and I am so glad I did! The first time I ran in these shoes I felt light on my feet and springy. I wanted to keep running. On my long runs I always have issues with my feet swelling in my shoes causing me arch pain, and blisters but wearing these shoes I haven't had either problem.
Way better transition than the distance!
I tried the Distance model before now and the lugs were just too high for me to feel comfortable right away. I was able to run 10 miles with these right out of the box! My only complaint is that the balls of my feet feel really hot. Could just be me :) Otherwise these are super comfy and I would recommend them.
NOT for plantar fasciitis!
Ran twice with these, 5 miles each time, once on a treadmill and once on trail. Both times, I ednded up limping in pain the next day. I pretty much only run with Newtons because I have plantar fasciitis, but these did not help at all. I tried to rate these as if I didn't have p.f. but I couldn't experience the shoes in any other way.
Cushioned and smooth ride
These have wonderful cushioning in the forefoot and a nice neutral ride, which is hard to find. The toe box is a little wide and it said to order up a half size, but I think my regular size (9.5) would've worked better then the size 10 I ordered. i love this shoe and will be exchanging it for a smaller size.
Would recommend to a friend
I am training for my first marathon and ran my my first half marathon last year; and only been running a year. It took a lot less time to adjust to these then my other newtons. I was a heel striker and newton has fixed me of that problem. I love them!
