I've read some reviewers criticizing the new lug design on Distance S III, but I did not notice a huge change from the previous version. Yes it's 5 lugs, and there is some added sense of added forefoot stability when you're standing on it. Once you're moving, the shoes feel very similar as the previous version: fast, lightweight, responsive to fast leg turnover, and well-cushioned in the forefoot.

They claimed to use more rigid lug material, but I haven't noticed added durability - they wore out just as quickly after a long run with high-speed downhills. The durability and lug wear is dependent on your running form and technique, so I'd take it with a grain of salt when someone claims over 600 miles on a single pair of Newtons: they'd easily accomplish the same with other brands as well, so it's not just a Newton thing. Distance S being the high-speed trainer that it is, mine's severely worn out around 250-300 miles.

If you are a mild pronator like myself, you may want to watch your form while going fast. During the toe-off, only few lugs will be in contact with the ground - not much surface area - which doesn't provide much resistance against an inward roll.

Overall, I've found Newton Distance (S) to work excellently on road, where you have high traction. The benefits over other brands' shoes on trail... not as obvious.

I've been wearing the Distance S for a long time. Through the evolution of the updates they have their advantages and things that make me long for the previous model. Last years design was a very solid shoe with no real drawbacks. So, going into this year, I had high expectations. The main difference is the design of the lower profile 5 lug system. Overall, I feel it gives it a softer feel and is a bit less responsive, but it still works for me. I've still been able to run as fast and the long runs have been more comfortable. After four pairs this year, I'll give it 4.5 stars. Not perfect, but a nice balance of cushion and speed.

I have a wide forefoot and have trouble with most brands. I found a great shoe in Newton Running. The transition period is somewhat of an annoyance, even coming from a 4mm drop (saucony mirage) I'm still in a transition period. Of course, this is a 2mm drop shoe, I didn't think it would take so much to stretch the calves/achilles that much more. This is my favorite model of the newton line because it's light, the upper is fantastic, and the lugs really help create a cushioned impact on the ball of the foot. This shoe has a great overall fit and I highly recommend it if you like the 'out of the ordinary' type of running shoe. One final note: if you are torn between this model and the motion iii, I tried both, there really isn't much difference between the two. The 155 price tag, lighter upper, and maybe a tad firmer sole...IMO are a better deal for your money. Let's be honest, $175 is a lot of money for a shoe!

The fifth lug adds just enough width to the toe box to make this shoe really comfortable. I have not experienced any problems with the stability of this shoe and I tend to notice if anything is off right away. Because of this sensitivity I don't get as many miles out of my running shoes as someone else might so I can't speak for it's durability. I get a new pair as soon as I see a noticeable rock in the shoe due to wear and that seems to be around 200 miles (which is better than other brands that I've tried). I also found the new Distance S to be much lighter than the previous version of Newtons I had, the Motion. Most of my training has been for half marathons and these shoes feel great the entire time I'm on the road.

I've been running in the Newton Distance S since 2010. This is the most different version, I've ever run in. I do like the new upper, tongue, and heel support. All three are much softer and pliable.

I can definitely tell that these are heavier though. This could be the addition of the 5th lug and making the shoe slightly wider. Since this is noticeable, this shoe feels much chunkier and clunkier than previous versions. Also, I feel like they are too cushioned. I've only done 2 runs in them 13 & 10 miles. So perhaps I need to break them in more...but honestly, I'm not too impressed.

I'd recommend either buying older versions or buying the new Distance, which is lighter (if you don't need too much support)
