My podiatrist recommended a motion control shoe to control my plantar facitis, which I got after running a half marathon in normal stability shoes (and maybe not enough training..). I was hesitant to go for motion control because I know how "old womanish" they can look, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Ariel 12s. They were by far the best looking motion control shoe on the shoe wall at Road Runner Sports. The knowledgable staff there helped me to realize why a motion control shoe was important, and I have experienced a huge improvement in my comfort level while running. After getting planters facitis I didn't think I would be able to run far distances again, but with the Ariel 12s I know that I can! Thanks Brooks!

My very favorite shoes
I love these shoes! I have been having terrible problems with a hammer toe and have gotten very thick orthotics as well. These shoes are just perfect. I bought 2 pair in the older version but they only had a wide size. I am normally not a wide but I took the shoes to my orthopedist and to my local RR store to confirm that the wide size would work. I am thrilled. I usually get about 500 miles or 5 - 6 months of wear. (I can no longer run but wear them on a treadmill and outdoors, walking between 3 -6 miles per day/7 days per week.) So they get a lot of use. I just hope they never stop with this design. I used to wear only Asics and they fooled around so much with the shoe that they lost me permanently as a client. No worries since I am much happier with the Brooks!
changes not improvement
Purchased a new pair of Ariel and have found a few of the changes diminish the comfort for my use, which is for walking. The movement of the plastic design on the side no longer comfortably accommodates foot width and bunions as did my previous pair even though I moved from a medium to a wide fitting. The new design does not have reinforcement over the big toe which may result in toenails damaging the fabric if not kept short. The more splayed sole on my previous pair, although looking bulky, seemed to give better stability. It appears that the changes to the shoe have been for cosmetic rather than performance reasons. The Ariel is the best shoe I have found to address my pronation problems, being comfortable to wear all day and eliminating problems I had experienced. It is just a shame that the new version is not as comfortable as my previous pair.

Perfect for roads
I bought the extra wide because I have a bunion on my right foot. I also have wide and flat feet. The shoes come with a fantastically cushioned insole that felt great but the shoe did not have enough arch support for me so I had to replace their insole for ones with arch support. Wish I could use theirs :( Other than that the shoes are great. The extra wides are plenty wide enough so I don't have to cut a hole in the side to stop the pressure on my bunion. The only bad thing besides the inadequate arch support (for my feet) is that there were no other color choices in the extra wide so I had to get the ugly boring silver and blue. :(

This is my 5th or 6th pair of these shoes. I like them because the toe box is wide and my feet don't go numb during my workout. Other shoes are too narrow at the top. I just wish that Brooks would expand the colors and make them look cuter. The Royal Blue is the best color they have had, others have been ugly green or light blue. I see that they are on the endangered list. Does this mean that the Ariel 13 is on it's way or they are discontinuing this shoe for good? There are not many shoes out there with amount of motion control that this shoe has. Keep making em, please!
Not a replacement for Asics Gel 6
I bought these shoes to replace Ascics
Gel Evolution 6. Very cushiony Not enough overpronatation
control for me. My foot rolled a lot. They are pretty but a little bright in color for me. I ordered the Gel Forte (Asics)
despite the reviews . The Forte could use more arch support as earlier Asics shoes have provided
but the pronation support is there and it is lighter than earlier Ascis. Returning Ariel
keeping Gel Forte

Take the quiz!
I took the quiz on the Home page for help to choose the right shoe for me. After exploring 5 suggestions by Road Runner Sports, I chose the Ariel 12. It was a perfect choice for me, and the size chart suggested I get a half size bigger than normal. I was doubtful, but did as suggested, and I am so glad I did because I needed the extra half size up! IF YOU ARE INACTIVE AND EXTREMELY OVERWEIGHT LIKE ME AND DO NOT KNOW WHICH SHOE TO CHOOSE, THIS IS THE WAY TO GET IT RIGHT!

Good shoe for heel pain
I do strength training and little cardio but have developed plantar fasciitis (self-diagnosis). I'm not a runner. I wear these shoes around the house and for errands. The shoe's arch support and motion control features have helped reduce the foot discomfort in the heel. I picked this shoe based off the shoe questionnaire on the website. I'm pleased with the shoe and considering buying another pair for the gym. I normally wear a size 8 & thought sizing was accurate.
Just the 'number' in WIDE.
After 71 years my feet are changing.....NO FAT PADS...with bony prominences on my soles, makes for a lot of pain. These shoes offer the padding and comfort I've been looking for. The ball of my foot is wide and heels are narrow with high arches and I used to supinate but now I just hit the ground bone on skin and orthotics adversely affected foot structure so my podiatrist recommended these shoes, and out of the box, offer the best I've experienced.

This is the only athletic shoe I wear!
I love these shoes and have worn only Brooks Ariel for 11 yrs. now. They are great for pronation, plantar faciitis, and heel spurs. They have excellent arch support. They are the best shoes I have tried and I've gone through a lot of brands to find what helps my foot problems so that I can still exercise without pain. I will never buy anything else as long as the quality remains.
Terrific Brooks Ariel running shoes
I walk every day and have plantar faciitis, heel spurs, and I over pronate a great deal. These Brooks Ariels do the trick. They are great for all of these conditions. I have worn Brooks Ariel shoes with inserts for years now and they are definitely my choice of shoe compared to all the diferent shoes I tried to help alieviate pain and provide stability. I highly recommend them!!
Toe Box Too Small
I got these to replace my Saucony ProStabil CS3's because my toenails were turning black on my long runs and Saucony doesn't make half sizes past size ten. I was told this shoe was comparable and it came in the 11.5 I need. I tried them on two runs and they were worse than the Saucony. Very narrow toe box and my arches and toes cramped up in them. They're going back today.
Support and motion control
I am so happy Roadrunner started carrying this shoe in a dark silver/blue combination (I hate the girly colors). This is my second pair of Ariel's and I have to say that they are the best when it comes to pronation control and support. I do recommend ordering one size up from your normal size. I am a size 9 in addidas, saucony, etc...but need to order a size 10 in Brooks.
Love at 3rd Run
Only took 3 runs to feel broken in, and then ran a PR in the BigBackYard 5k last Sunday. I did add orthotics but pronate horribly so that would be true in any shoe. They are more breathable than my last pair - the only con, and its a small quibble, toe boxes on all these shoes (not just this pair) are huge...just because I pronate and wear an 8.5 not a 6 doesn't mean I need a ginormous toe box.
Love this shoe
This is my second pair of Brooks Ariel. I loved the first pair so much. I had to buy a second pair, when those wore out. I am an over-pronator; these shoes provide the right amount of motion control without rubbing a blister on the inside of my heel just behind my arch. The first pair helped me lose 60 pounds. I'm hoping the second pair will help me lose 60 more.
I am flat footed and there is nowhere near as much motion control as in Asics Gel Evolution 6. My foot appears to under-pronate excessively in the Brooks but at the same time I don't feel the arch support as I would like. Quality appears lack-luster in comparison. Not very fond of the aqua mist color. The Asics works better for me. Will be returning the Brooks.
Comfort for wide feet
Followed advice and sized up 1/2 size. The EE has room for my wide feet - and comfortable. got both the Ariel and the Adrenaline to compare. The Ariel is more cushioning than the Women's Brooks Adrenaline GTS 13. Walk ~6 miles/day with an active golden retriever so I go through about 3-4 pairs per year. Wish the wide size came in more than just 1 color.
replacement for Addiction 9
This shoe is a much better replacement for the Addiction 9 that I loved, than the addicition 10. accomodates orthotics and provides stability with support for outward roll. I bought 2 pair for myself, and one for my daughter, highly recommend if you need more room on the arch of the foot.
Great Running Shoe
Most comfortable shoe that I've run in yet! I have flat feet and I don't need to buy any insoles with this shoe ( I do with Nike , Asics, etc.) My toes aren't smashed either. Do order a 1/2 size up. I wear 8-8 1/2 in regular shoes and size 9 fit me perfectly. I even bought a pair for my daughter!
Can't walk without them
With my acute post-tibial tendonitis, collapsed arches, and severe pronation, I can't walk without these shoes. They are exceptionally supportive, and I literally wear them all my waking hours. My custom orthotics fit perfectly, and if Brooks ever stopped making the Ariel, I'd be up a creek.
La Mesa, CA
great shoe limited durablility
Use for walking and running avg 40mi a wk. Overall integrity of the shoe fails quickly- especially the shoe box area and wears out quickly but provides excellent support for pronation during use. I have not found another shoe to replace them thus a repeat buyer.
Love this shoe
This is my third pair of ariels. I love them because they hold up very well and enabler to run even though I over pronate really bad. My surgeon recommend these shoes if I ever wanted to run again. I tried a different stability shoe once but it wasn't as good as this.
my favorite running shoes
I've been wearing Ariel 12 for years. They're on the endangered list and I'm afraid they will be gone soon. I like the wide toe box, my toes go numb in some other shoes. I only wish they were a little more attractive and came in better colors.
I don't like the changes
For 2012 the toe box was narrowed ever so slightly and the plastic design on the side was moved just enough that it painfully pressed on the side of my foot. I've worn Ariels for four years and now I am searching for another shoe.

Love this shoe - but....
I have trouble finding this shoe in a 6.5 EE. I thought I'd try it in a wide since this particular model runs wide but it didn't fit. This shoe is VERY expensive, rarely no sale.

LOVE LOVE LOVE This Shoe!
I'm a gym rat, I also walk, a lot. I have really wide feet, I normally have to order 1/2 size larger to accommodate the width issue. Not so with this shoe. It's wide & SO comfortable!
San Diego, CA
This is actually the only shoe I wear
This is the only shoe I wear for probably 10 years plus. I have planter fasciitis and the stability of these shoes along with my orthotics helps my feet to not hurt. I look forward to new colors every year.

Not for my feet
My feet were burning within 2 miles, blisters...just not the right shoe for my feet. I have a friend that has them...she loves the shoe.
Won't Go Anywhere Without Them
They provide the support I need with my orthotics and helps keep the pressure off the knees.
