First review in 15 years

5

I've been running since 1992, off and on but mostly on. Over that span I've ranged from averaging 30 miles per week down to stretches of 10-15 miles per month. I've raced for years at a time and then not raced for years at a time. I'm not a small guy, I've weighed between 190 and 230 in that time span. I mention all that to tell you that over the past 20+ years I have only been compelled to write a shoe review twice. Late 90's with the second generation AirMax, and now with the Brooks Trance 12. I am currently at about 12-15 miles per week and have put about 40 miles on these shoes. Hardly a large sample size but holy cow they have been the most comfortable miles I have run in I cannot remember how long. Five years maybe? More? I cannot remember ever wearing a shoe where it occurred to me how comfortable the heel strike was. I mean, I NEVER think about or notice that stuff but it is noticeable in this shoe. I am a mild overpronator with average arches and have suffered bouts of plantar fasciitis in the (distant) past. I am old enough that my aches have aches and my stock position in Pfizer is paying off handsomely with my usage of Advil. And yet these shoes have extended my comfort factor by a large amount, which means I can run bigger chunks at a time. I've ordered several pairs and now hope that some whippersnapper at Brooks does not decide to change this shoe in the next six months because "it's due for a change". Please, leave this one as-is for awhile!

Serious trainer

4

I upgraded from a Trance 10 to a Trance 12 after waiting too long to do so. The 12 is an extremely well made training show that provides excellent cushioning and moderate support. I am a heel striker and this shoe holds up nicely. This shoe runs true to size and is a little narrower than the Trance 10's were. I have a wider foot than average, but this model comes in just one width. The toebox is just a tad too narrow to be perfect for me, but it is workable. This is a shoe to buy if you intend on doing long runs, tend to be a heavier runner, and want to use them for trainers. For speed work they are a bit too heavy. I like shoes with superior cushioning, and ones that come with a serious bounce. This shoe meets that need, although you get more bounce from a Nike Lunar Glide+. I also tried on a Hurricane, which I was impressed with. But the Brooks seem like they are made to last, which is why I went with them. i put upgraded footbeds in them to improve their bounce. Brooks seems to have weaned me off of my love of Asics. After several long runs my impressions of this shoe have been confirmed. I would rate these shoes actually at 4 1/2 stars, and note that they run a little narrower than I like them. But not a full size narrower.

Got Me On The Rebound

5

What do you do when your running shoe of 19 years breaks up with you? Find something better and move on. These are my first pair of Trance and the best running shoes I've ever had. They feel like a secure sock with a shoe stuck to the bottom, more like a skin than a constructed shoe upper. The short toe-off makes me feel like I'm rocketing off each step. The huge cushioned heel takes my slow 6.5 mph heel strike stride and pushes back for more. You can feel the arch support standing still, so it more than handles my over-pronation like I'm a neutral runner. The color schemes are super bangin' they are darker than they appear online, with some reflectivity. I hope they make my black on black. Brooks, I will rock the 13s. Most of my running equipment is Brooks they put thought into all their products. I never had the courage to switch my running shoe and try Brooks. After being forced to, I regret not trying them sooner. If you want it go get it!

So Far So Good

4

So far so good. I am new to running so these shoes are fixing a issue I had. My last shoes went flat on my and I did not realize it until I had immediate left hip pain and pain all over my body. I checked out my shoes and realized they were dead. So I completely took the advice of the sales rep. I got the shoes with the custom insoles which corrected that my arches are way off. One is very high and the other is very low. Then to help with the control of my movement. I ran 4.5 miles in them a few days ago and they felt great. No complaint there. I have not paid attention yet, but the weight of them might be a little over normal. Not sure the jury is still out on that. Over all is has been a good chose. I have 30 days so over the next couple weeks I have some nice plans to put some walking and running miles on them. So we shall see.

Found my new trainer

5

These have become my main trainers for long runs along with the Adrenaline for short distance. I had been nursing a nagging ankle soreness for several months after my longer runs. I had good shoes and the doc didn't find a thing. I decided to give the Trance a shot. Was pleased to find there's almost no break-in time. Took them on a 2 mile run the day I got them. Good. Five miles on my next, still good. That weekend I did 11 miles and felt great. And my ankle was good! So here's the pro's and con's. They rock real well from heel to toe. Awesome cushion and roomy on the toe box. However, you definitely need to go up a size on Brooks. The only two cons, heavier than most shoes and don't breath to well. Glad I got them in the Fall, because running on these during the Texas summer would not have been fun.

So Far, So Good

4

Picked up a pair of the Trance 12's as I've been with this shoe a long time. My last pair were the Trance 10's and so far I feel like this is a much better shoe. It's less clunky than the 10's and feels a little lighter. I've had them out on runs of 3, 3.5, 4.5, and a 10K and I have no complaints. These shoes offer great support for heavier runners (6', 205 lbs), but are still great shoes for tempo training and speed work. The only downside I found thus far is that the green color in the photo is a little misleading and appears much darker online than when they arrived. The green color is much more neon, Day-Glo green than I was expecting. So far, I am very pleased with my purchase and would likely buy these shoes again. Hope that helps!

Very Solid Shoes!!!

5

I was a huge fan of Solomon shoes but was having issues with consistency. Road Runner gave me suggestions for my foot type and I went with the Brooks shoe because of the fit and feel. The shoe is a little heavier then the others, but at 230 lbs whats an extra couple of ounces. I have put over 400 miles running and walking on these shoes in the last 3 months and they show little sign of wear. The estimated 400 miles of life on this shoe but I don't see them being replaced anytime soon. This shoe is solid, I would suggest it to my friends and I will buy them again!

Well-Cushioned Shoe!

4

The Brooks Trance 12 is a very good shoe. It's a little on the heavy side, but with that, you get excellent cushioning (much better than the Trance 11 and the Saucony Hurricane). With a wide toe box, I don't get the blistering problems I had with Asics. I'm a 170-pound runner, so the impact cushioning is important to me. My longest run in these shoes so far has been 8 miles, but I don't anticipate any problems with longer runs. I'm convinced that there are others like me who will find that the Brooks Trance 12 is the best running shoe for them.

I run between 3 to 6.5 miles daily. I am about 5' 11" and between 190 and 200lbs (it creeps up when you hit 50). After in-store testing, figured out that I need more than my Neutral Plus by brand A ... Tried Brand A in Stability Plus, but Brooks edged them out with slightly better cush in the forefoot and bigger toe box (helps with stubbed toes too). I normally wear 12 1/2 but 13s with inserts work better. First run I saw a definte improvement in both time and comfort. Used custom inserts from RR, so cannot comment on regular insert.

Not sure if it is the shoes or inserts

2

I am not certain if it is the shoes or the custom made inserts from Road Runner, but running in these shoes is causing more pain in my hips and feet than I have ever had with other, less expensive shoes (including cross trainers). The shoes feel comfortable when I put them on, but while running or walking, my left hip, arches, and big toes hurt, when they did not with my prior running shoes. Make sure you have a good return policy if you are going to buy these shoes / custom inserts. I am going to return mine.

About what I expected

4

I purchased these shoes a few weeks back and I am happy with them. I am relatively new to running, but I like these shoes better then my hurricane 14's because at times the Sauconys felt a bit clunky. While the trance is a stability shoe and fits more like a neutral shoe while still giving you what you need for support. These shoes however are heavier then the hurricanes that to me is the biggest draw back.

Great Shoe - my favorite

5

I run about 20 miles over 5-6 days per week. I have run in Brooks Adrenalines for the last 10 years and was happy. I decided to try these because I match the ROADRUNNERSPORTS guideline that says to use a Stability+ shoe. I'm very happy I did, I used to have a slight hip pain and now I have none. I thought the shoe might feel heavy, but it runs light. The cushioning is effective.

faboulous shoe !

5

I love this shoe for its cushioning and stability. Gave up on Asics Kayano's because they became a more minimal shoe with less stability and lower heel to toe drop (I have achilles problems) . My only complaint is that Brooks stopped making the shoe in widths. I wear a 2E. Please bring widths back!. . I currently run in Trance 11's.

Overall Great Shoe

5

I had originally purchased another brand of shoe, but after giving them a fair shot I returned them to Road Runner and asked for further advise. The sales associate put me in these with a super feet insert because of landing issue I have. I put about 20 miles a week on, with no problem. I have been able to run further more consistently than before.

Presently running 22-25 miles weekly (mostly on asphalt). At 228-230 lbs, I tend to break stability + shoes down rather quickly. This is a nice shoe to mix in with Saucony Hurricane line if you rotate shoes. Worth the extra weight.

Love it. I won't wear another shoe!

5

I love these shoes. I am a bigger runner (6'4 210lbs) so my body takes a bit of a pounding, and these shoes offer the most support of any other shoe I have tried. I switch to the Trance 2 yrs ago and They just get better every year. I won't wear another shoe.

Great running shoe

This is my second pair of Brooks. The fit is true. I run about 3 miles every day on paved roads. My last pair lasted just over 14 months; even though I kept running on them for nearly 24 months.

New to Brooks - So far so good

4

Been an Asics runner for several years but decided to try another brand. So far the Brooks ride feels good. The D width is narrower than Asics but not a show stopper and seem to be breaking in well.
