I've logged about 1,700 miles on the watch so far. I find it accurate and easy to operate. Plenty of options for the data fields. Best to set up and then run instead of setting up during the run. Data upload to computer is easy, but software is only okay. Cold and wet do limit the sensitivity of the bezel. Not the best for short interval workouts if you want to do a lot of resetting. Battery life is adequate and charging is easy. Just got the bike sensor and it's a nice and easy add on. Bottom line, it's not perfect but it's a must have for serious runners.

Very accurate, great running partner. I do sweat a lot and it turns a little hard to control the bissel (not impossible), however if I set it up before running I do not have to much to touch until I finish. Absolutely fabulous for training programs if you plan to workout measuring your heart rate. Great performance control while running. Easy to program your training sessions and much more easy to share them with Garmin Connect. I absolutely recommend it!!

I was skeptical to try the 405 due to some of the reviews about the bezel being sensitive. I am happy that I decided to give it a try. I avoid any of the issues related to the sensitivity of the bezel (none of which I have experienced) by importing workouts I creat in the Garmin Training Center to the 405, setting my data fields to rotate, locking the bezel, and beginning my runs. Excellent for any type of workout (interval, tempo, long, etc.) I recommend it to all my friends.

I love my Garmin 405 GPS-Heart Rate Monitor! My husband got it for me for X-Mas. I use almost every function flawlessly after watching so many YouTube vidoes on how to use the product. I also went through the user manual. The bezel function is somewhat similar to first generation I-Pod. I can upload my workouts to computer and review the courses I run via Google Earth. I can also analyze my performance every mile (or lap) including pace, heart rate zone, heart rate etc. When I am at gym, I simply use the heart rate zone and calorie display. I have had no issues with sweat interrupting the usuability or functionality. It is not as bulky as the previous models I had like 101 or 305. I highly recommend it for runners or anyone who loves to stay active and fit!

Do not buy this watch! If I could give it no stars, I would. Why would Garmnin make a watch for atheletes that doesn't work when you sweat? Very disappointed in what I thought was a reputable company and Garmin support leaves a lot to be desired.

Mon, July 27,2009:
This product is great if you don't sweat! The touch bezel becomes completely useless when wet. I'm not talking about sweating directly on the watch - if your fingers are moist and you try to use the bezel - forget it. If your shirt is the slightest bit sweaty, you won't be able to wipe it dry enough to use. Garmins customer service response: 'lock the bezel'. This defeats the purpose of buying a $350 multi-function watch. If you don't sweat and/or don't want to change the screen or access menu items on the fly, then the watch is fine. Otherwise - forget it!

I received the 405 as a gift from my familiy in June 09. I love it and it was easy for me to learn the set up features. I have small bones so the watch is large but it it works perfectly to keep track of mileage, heart rate, etc. I turn the GPS off after each run and only have to charge the forerunner weekly. It only takes a couple of minutes to find the statellites again before the next activity.

Didn't like it. Returned it after 2 months. Battery life stinks. Bezel way too sensitive to use while in motion. Software/upload gadget always froze up on my PC. Can't swim with it. Too big and goofy looking to wear as a watch as marketings suggests. But the worst thing was that it stopped tracking during a half ironman tri (when I needed it most).

Many positives, but also many negatives. On the positive side, this training watch is smaller, weighs less than the other Garmins, finds the satellites easier and quicker even on very cloudy days, and looks great. It is very accurate and once you get used to it (there is a small learning curve here), it is easy to use. The trade-offs are many. It takes awhile to get used to. If you turn off the bezel touch system you can't use the backlight, if you sweat a lot (I do), it seems to mess up the "beeping system." During a long run, it beeps at me at least 20 times a minute, quite annoying. I have trouble with the strap, securing it properly and you have to charge it constantly, every day. I bought this watch when it first came out and perhaps they have gotten the bugs out. I have been a Garmin fan for many years, but this watch has much room for improvement.

I use to run with a Nike SDM. It was a real drag when the batteries died on long runs. However, I really like being able to recharge the 405. The touch bezel works fine. The watch is easy to use. The software interface was easy to setup. I am happy with my 405.

I purchased the 405 W/HM a year ago, & I think it is wonderful, (a bit big) but that is ok. I do endurance riding on horseback, 50+ miles withing 12 hours. With this gps and heart monitor all in one, I only need to wear 1 watch instead of carrying 2/3 units. It is easy and less trouble, I have my horses heart rate, miles and speed all in one view. The heart rate comes up much faster than the other unit that I was using, and I find that I do not need a gel to see the heart rate.

I gave this product a 5 last July but that was before my long training runs. I have now experienced the following issues 1) ANT agent sometimes stops working and I have to remove/replace the receiver from the USB. 2) I had the screen go blank on a run. It actually still worked but I could not view the data until i downloaded it onto the computer. The problem is that i was doing intervals and did not have a watch :( 3) I wore the watch under my jacket. It began raining which caused the bezel to continue to beep even though it was locked. When I looked at the screen it was blank and I could not get it to work. Again, when I downloaded it, the data was captured. It may be an energy saving feature since these were long runs... i don't know.

Great GPS initial pick-up and constant reception. It's small size is a huge benefit. I was using a Timex Body Link for several years and this is a much better system in that regard. The Bezel ring totally sucks if you are hairy and sweat more than others. It just continuously cycles through different screens unless you lock the bezel in which case you can't easily use the multiple functions that make this watch great. I tried adjusting the sensitivity on the bezel with no luck. I am returning this watch.

Quirky!!! The good - small (for a GPS), sleek, lots of options, fairly accurate, can use as a watch. The bad - for people who sweat a lot the bezel controls start to stop functioning - short battery life. Overall very good but beware of it's quirks!!!

I've had the 405 for about three months now. I've had no problems at all. This is my first HRM. When I ordered this I did look at all of the reviews and was a little reluctant...but so far I've been very pleased. Easy to use and set up, and though kinda big, it does have a sleek profile. Great GPS in a small package. Don't get all the gripes here. If the bezel is going "crazy" all you have to do is push the two buttone simultaneously and the bezel will lock. Also, the battery works fine... just charge it and look at the "Battery Life" % before you run and you'll be fine. Garmin Connect is a nice site, but the included software needs a workover to improve it. It's not that bad, but it needs more customization and a better look to it.

Well I've owned mine for about a month now and loved it at first. But I'm in the military and need a watch that can stand up to that. First off the battery indicator has never worked, the back button broke about a week ago and I still can't get a straight answer form Garmin on how to get it fixed. I actually downloaded the Training Center from the Garmin website and love it. I have not had problems with the touch bezel. Did I mention the back button broke and garmin has been no help at all. Probably going to go with the Suunto X10. Seems to stand up to abuse better.

A master runner not always assisted by technology in training, I have been using mine for ten weeks with no problems at all. GPS signal is picked up on the trail too, it holds the charge long enough for a 3+ hour run, and the variety of use has no limits in helping my training. I started to use it for my cross-training with the bike mount, so I can store all data in one place.

I now own a 405 HRM and it has taken me about 4 runs to get used to it. Once I set the intial settings and figured out how to use the bezel, I have found it to be well worth the money. I don't like the Garmin training software but once you link the watch to the software, you have the option of seeing it with either the google world map or the Garmin connect. The garmin connect software gives you a running account of your runs and is easy to set up.

I have been using the 405 for a few weeks. 1. The GPS picks up a signal quickly and holds it. The GPS is easy to use. The 405 has a nice feature where you set your starting location and use the GPS to find your way back. That is great when running through the woods. Also, you can type in GPS coordinates to use if you are into geocaching. 2. The Bezel is easy to use. You can change the sensitivity on it. You can lock the Bezel once you have set the watch so don't have to worry about accidentally hitting the Bezel and changing settings, etc. 3. The Virtual Partner is great. You set whatever pace you want and then compete against the Virtual Partner. 4. I recommend reading the owners manual a couple of times and playing around with the watch to get used to the many features. 5. My only complaint is that the battery charge lasts 2 or 3 days. You have to get into the habit of recharging the watch battery on a regular basis. Charge it at night. It takes about

Sadly, I had to return mine. I dont know if it was faulty, but it would just die on me in the middle of runs. battery wouldnt last a full long run. granted, i run over 2 hours with it, but the 305 lasted like a week before dying. very frustrating especially when you are relying on it for exact mileage. i will not buy another one.

As a Forerunner 201 and 301 owner I was excited to get the 405. So far, after 10 runs the results have been mixed. When it works well it is great. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work well. I have had it freeze up on one run (requiring a reset that caused the run data to be lost) and have had the entire screen to go blank after another run (required a full reset that caused a loss of run data -and- all settings) as well as other smaller problems. Support from Garmin has left much room for improvement.

I returned my 405 within weeks of buying it -- very short battery use before having to recharge -- my 305 will go all week before charging. bezel is a nice idea, but finiky, even on slower setting. software stinks - very clunky and NOT what you'd expect when you buy the watch - i guess i'd hoped tyey would re-work the software when they came out with the 405. i really wanted to like this, but was very disappointd. the high point is that it fit nicely even tho my wrist issmall (last setting). not uncomfortable -a nd i liked it being not black. (The green is not that nice, but at least it's not black!) the ANT never did work properly! also wouldve like to have a thermometer since it's gotta be possible! it would be a nice touch... ive gone back to using my 305 until they rework this with a new model...darn...

I've been using the watch for about a month now, almost daily. The watch itself is great. Great functionality, great specs, very usefull. BUT - and there's always a but - the watch basically freezes up when it becomes wet. I sweat more than average and the iPod-like bezel does not respond when wet. I read a bit about this and made the purchase anyway. Big mistake. I am now returning because after about six miles, it is useless. A few other comments: - Strap is comfortable but if you have a larger chest (I'm 44"), and you are forced to wear it tight, plan on buying lots of the $10 straps. Mine is already showing signs of streatching. I had a polar before with a nylon strap and this wasn't an issue - There is some negative play on getting the watch to sync with PC. I'm a fairly technically savy guy and it took more than one try. The instructions online aren't the best. Takeway, if you are a skinny runner who doesn't sweat, this watch is a five. I am returning this unit and ordering another one in case I got a defective unit. I just can't believe I am having so many problems when people write such rave reviews about this little piece of equipment. The problems I have had include: (1) the unit - even on power save mode and even sitting on my desk - discharges in less than 8 hours (2) Watch syncing with the ANT is FICKLE even when the watch is sitting right next to USB unit. Sometimes I have to force it, and even when I do that, it only works half the time. (3) When on power save and bezel locked, the watch beeps EVERY 2-3 minutes and tells me the bezel is locked - thanks, I know, I locked the bezel....now shut up! It does this whether sitting on my desk or on my wrist. I even set the watch upright on my desk so nothing was touching the bezel, but that wasn't it. It just kept beeping. (4) Perhaps I will figure this out better with the next unit, but this unit seems incredibly hard to use JUST as a heart rate monitor.

One touch bezel=5. It has three sensitivity adjustments and can be locked to prevent unwanted screen changes. GPS accuracy=5. It is very accurate and picks up satellite quickly. Software=3. I am using MotionBased. The goals could be more robust and I would like to add my training schedule. I was a little surprised about the large size. The dial face is approx 1-3/4" diameter. Charging is quick and easy. No foot pod needed for outdoor running.

Great training tool. Couple of issues: (1) the touch basel does not work if your hands are wet, I live in Florida and everybodies hand are wet from the humidity. (2) The pace function is not accurate unless you put the watch into lap/pace. I contacted Garmin and they have had other complaints about the pace function. (3) Screen changes with out me doing anything, just about sure this is casued by heavy sweating during a run. This can be sovled by putting the watch in auto scroll. (4) The lap button is awkward when attempting to manually hit lap splits, especially if my hands are wet. This is best solved by putting the watch in auto/lap mode. Ofcourse auto lap mode does not help you when you are doing interval work at various distances. Great training tool, it works best when you preset the watch for the workout and don't touch the watch until your workout is complete.

Pros: 1. User friendly manual. 2. Quick & easy watch set-up. 3. GPS is extremely accurate. 4. Virtual runner is perfect for tracking pace. 5. The run log analysis on Garmin connect provides performance details, hr info, elevation, and more. Cons: 1. Garmin USB needs to be connected to download run info. 2. No case came with the watch. Just replying to a few earlier posts: If your 405 jumps out of power save (watch) mode, confirm the bezel is locked by pressing both buttons for about 1 sec to lock/unlock. The 405 does have Mac software for the Ant Stick which lets you upload workouts to Garmin Connect. But Garmin Training Center for Mac doesn't support the 405 yet. I would guess this will happen within the next few months.

Before the 405, I had used a Forerunner 301 and 205. I think the 405 is better in some (but not all) ways. The smaller size, watch functions and Ant Stick are all improvements. The unit seems to charge faster and GPS works better than ever despite the smaller size. But touch bezel menu navigation can be frustrating and the software needs more improvement. Garmin is working hard on the software so hopefully we'll see some nice updates later this year.

The size, weight and feel of the new 405 is great (5 stars). I don't care much for the touch bezel (2 stars). It is ackward. Flicking your wrist will cause it to change screens. Weird! I would rather Garmin had added 2 more buttons on the other side of the watch for selecting different functions. Also, I HATE the fact that the watch cannot be turned off, unlike the 305 and previous models. On top of that, my 405 will not stay in power save mode. It jumps in and out of it and the battery drains very fast. I am having to charge it every evening. I contacted Garmin about this problem and they told me that others have had the same issue with the 405. Garmin engineers are supposed to be working on a software upgrade that will need to be downloaded that is supposed to correct this power-save mode problem. And as with any GPS device, do not even bother with the altitude feature. It is horribly off (how can I have ascended 1000 feet over a 6 mile run on basically a flat course?).

I have had my Forerunner 405 for 1 day so I haven't really got a chance to dig deep into the watch yet. However it beats carrying around my huge cellphone during my workout. The heart rate monitor is extremely accurate as well as the GPS. The touch bevel is great and instructions are easily understood. Workouts are tranferred to my computer when I walk near it. I have has bad luck in the past with watch bands. This band seems sturdy enought to handle my abuse. But I probably will by a cheap digital watch for everyday use and only wear the 405 during my workouts. Bottom line, wonderful product with tons of accurate workout feedback. LOVE IT!!!

Had the 205 for two years good watch, but bulky. 405 Picks up GPS right away. I was having problems with downloading info onto my computer, but Garmin took care of it. Great watch.. MCJ/IRC B2V CHAMPIONS 2008

Doesn't work with Mac's and they don't tell you that. Otherwise great.

Had the 305 - was always a challenge acquiring satellites. Not with the 405. Typically, I'm now ready to run within second of turning on the GPS. The online training website, Garmin Connect, has a ways to go. It is slow and clunky and lacks features you'd expect. The site is supposed to relaunch in the fall (merging MotionBased to a single product) so hopefully things will improve.

It's hard not to give this 5 stars because of everything it has. The training program, wireless download and tocuh bezel with a million options make this an advanced partner. But... The thing I loved most was the ease of use on the run. No arm band, no foot pod, just put it on my wrist and run. I only wish it made me faster, maybe the next model.

One of the best pieces of equipment for running. The Garmin 405 gives you is incomparable measurements. If you are looking for a personal coach you need this. The ability to analyze everything will easily allow you to make adjustments to your current training plan. The GPS is remarkable as well; I often run under thick tree cover and the Garmin 405 has performed flawlessly.
