I have been running now for about three years. As I began the last couple of years training for the half-marathon, I found that the longer I ran, the more tired I felt. This had a direct impact on my time as well. I did some research and found the GU gel product and tried it out. It seems amazing that such a small bit of GU could make such a difference, but it did. Any run that I went on that would be 45 minutes or longer, I would have a GU with me. Shortly after eating it, I noticed that I was a bit more energetic. My times actually improved as well.
Besides the effect it had on my body and running stamina, I think that it is an easy thing to use while running. The packaging allows for easy carrying if needed, and could fit in a pocket or pouch without any problems. The GU is also easily opened and can be quickly consumed, even while running.
I have tried most all of the flavors offered by GU. I have found the chocolate flavors to have no "medicinal" type taste to them at all. The fruit varieties were good, but not quite as flavorable. My favorite was the Espresso.
The final comment I would make is that GU is very affordable for what is provided. I have tried a variety of other products like power bars and other gel brands. GU was, by far, the most economical and easy to use.

Best flavor and consistency
I purchased the GU variety pack after trying the Vanilla and Roctane Blueberry Pomegranate, both of which I was immensely impressed with. Previously, I had trained for marathons with the Powerbar Gel (Strawberry Banana)and found it quite difficult to get down during the long runs. It wasn't necessarily due to the consistency, but the flavor really just didn't sit right.
The GU gels are fantastic as far as consistency goes! I've had no problems so far during my long runs, and it doesn't take too long afterward for the effects to kick in (especially the caffeinated flavors). I haven't had a chance to try all of the flavors yet, but so far vanilla bean is by far the best.
However, not all of the flavors are as exceptional. The Orange left a lot to be desired.
I was hoping my pack would have included the Mint Chocolate, however it was not. I guess I will just have to purchase that separately to try. They did include one of the roctane flavors, which was a nice surprise, so i'm looking forward to having that!
Overall, I'd recommend the variety pack to anyone who wants to get a feel for which flavors they'd prefer

good energy for the price
I haven't tried too many gels yet, but I gave this one a try for the price. Very nice stuff! I went on a 4 hour walk in moderate heat and took a few of these along. Amazing! I didn't think I could walk that far! About 45 minutes into it I used one, then one every additional 45-60 minutes. I also had an octane with me, and if I had the money to spend, I'd stock up on those too. I couldn't believe how much more stamina I had with the octane! These are great for sustained energy. I didn't notice any peaks in my energy level. I also use these sometimes before or during weight training. It takes me over an hour to complete my regimen, so these really help on an empty stomach first thing in the morning or about halfway through. The extra boost is so helpful. Love espresso love... ;-)
Give yourself and "EDGE"
I started running at age 69, and have run hundreds of short races, plus 7 marathons to date. Started using Tri-Berry Gu from the first race. I take it always every six miles, and have talked many runners into using it. Recovery takes about a quarter mile after use. You can feel it's effect when it kicks in. Because water is important to take with Gu, it causes one to drink a full glass, instead of passing up water stops, which is very imp0ortant. Wouldn't compete without it, and I tell all these young runners to be sure they have their Gu.
GU Packs - Chocolate
I am training for a half marathon, so I use the GU to get ready for a run. I'll take one like instructed about 15 minutes before. It says to take another one about 45 minutes into the run, but I find that the texture of the gel pack isn't all that great once you get started because your body naturally looks for something refreshing, and the gel kind of sticks to you like peanut butter. So I'd probably stick to using it just before for that initial surge of energy and switch to the gummies during the run. Oh and the GU packs are only like 100 calories too ;)
great energy pick me up
Have always loved the texture and flavor of the GU packs over the other brands...some flavors I prefer over others, natch, but they're great to carry on a long run or during a race or hiking or hunting. The only possible negative I would say is that the packet sometimes is a bit hard to open (and that is probably due to my funbling fingers) and it'd be nice not to have to worry about the extra tab to throw away if you end up ripping it off from the rest of the packet.

GU is the best energy!
Your body can't hold much more than an hour's worth of energy. If you are working out longer than that, and want to actually "perform" you may have to supplement your energy. I've tried several brands and I like to GU the best. I often workout in the very early mornings (5am) so the having the caffeine in some of them really helps. The assorted mix pack is a great way to keep from getting tired of one taste and to try an assortment to see what you like.
Fuel for The Long Run
I am returning to running after a long layoff and am training for my first half marathon. A skeptic at heart, I followed package directions and took one 15 minutes before my first 9 mile run. Even in the brutal summer humidity, I noticed that I had much more energy and that I didn't have problems eating them during the run. They are now part of my routine and in my gym bag at all times. I wonder if they would work for me when I'm teaching...............
Vanilla Bean and Lemon Sublime
I'm training for the Dublin marathon--my first endurance event!--and my coaches have really emphasized the importance of nutrition during the event. So far, the vanilla bean and lemon sublime (with caffeine) flavors have been terrific. I take one every 45 minutes during a run, and alternate flavors, and so far, so good. They've really helped me sustain energy levels, and using them for mid-run calorie bursts has even helped my post-run recovery time.
Excellent for sustained energy
I love this stuff. I've used it as a quick pick-me-up before short runs, when I didn't plan my meals as well as I should have, and I take it during long runs to keep me going. It tastes great. It's easy to use. And it gives me that extra shot of energy every five miles or so. Exactly what I was looking for.
Vanilla Bean tastes like an ooey-gooey caramel center, and Chocolate Mint tastes like a rich pudding. The texture and flavor are both excellent. (In fact, I have to buy more because my husband has taken a fancy to these gels.)
Do the Gu!
I haven't tried more than a few other products because I haven't needed to. Gu satisfies all the nutritional needs I've had on long training runs for my marathons. Gu is delicious (there is a flavor for every palate), easy to carry and gets the job done. My energy and stamina are without a doubt significantly improved when I use Gu as directed, but without a huge sugar spike and crash. Also, since you use it all at once there's no need to worry about already opened packages leaving a mess in your gear bag or water belt.
So much better than PowerBar Gels!
So much better than PowerBar Gels in so many ways. 1) Most importantly, much better tasting. There's not the medicinal flavour of powerbar gels. I haven't come across a Gu gel flavour I don't like. 2) It's the same number of calories in a slimmer pouch. Doesn't bounce around in my shorts pocket.3) Less waste. I find it easier to squeeze out the gel at the bottom.I only wished that it was more calorie dense but I'm sure some research team at Gu determined this to be the best energy shot without upsetting the stomach.
Your Commitment Issues Are Nearly Over!
GU Gels are fantastically simple to use - tear and squeeze (then dispose of thoughtfully!). An excellent product, but the only drawback when buying anything flavoured in bulk ... I tend to get tired of the same flavour again and again ... The multi-pack is the perfect solution!
No longer do I need to worry over committing to just one flavour! Alternatively it is a great way to recognise which flavours you prefer. Great gift idea too!
GU ENERGY GEL
I take one 10 minutes prior to and every 45 - 60 minutes during a marathon.
I'm an avid runner who is convinced that Gu's enhance my performance. I take one packet 10 - 15 minutes prior to my workouts or races, and then every 45 - 50 minute during my workouts. The energy kicks in practically instantly. They are easy to carry and swallow during a run, and the chocolate outrage flavor is delicious. I haven't found anything that compares to Gu's for ease of use and energy boost.

Who doesn't like chocolate
Started running 3 months ago training for 1st Marathon and was advised to find my flavor and stick with it. At first, I thought that eating chocolate flavored gel would be the hardest. It's the BEST! I highly recommend chocolate flavors and I'll tell ya why. Chocolate pudding is a real food so it's easy for your brain (if you wouldn't do well on Fear Factor) to gulp it down since it tastes like and feels like pudding. Other flavors (berry, staw/banana, etc.) are good, but I've NEVER had straw/banana in that consistency. Makes a big difference.
Great Deal on a Great Product!
This is the best deal I've found for a product I use a LOT of. I'm a relatively slow runner, which for marathon training means I'm out tackling Long Runs for a LONG TIME - needing a lot of GU's. I personally love the Chocolate Outrage and Chocolate Mint flavors the MOST - just like Chocolate Frosting and Ande's mints. :) MMMMMMMM. I love being able to get a case sent to me. They are delicious and provide the energy needed for those long training sessions.
One of the best flavors
I use GU everytime I go on a run of 8mi or more. I think the Tri-berry is one of the best flavors offered. The directions on the package say to use 15min before and every 45min during a run and also hydrate along the way. I recently read you should consider using it twice for every hour of run. I think the boost takes about 6min to get going and last for about 35-40min and maybe less toward the end of 15mi+ run.
Never hit the road without it!
I have used this product for years. I began training for marathons and needed the energy boost to get through the long runs. This product faithfully got me through Pike's Peak 3 times and the Dallas marathon. I am now using it on my long road bike training and it has continued to serve me well. I have never had a "DNF" and I truly believe that this product is responsible for my success.
I take one pack 20 min. before running than every 30 to 40 minutes. I loved the Chocolate but the taste lasted to long in my mouth even washing it down with Gu drink. Switched to Expresso and never going back. After running I down a bag of beans and 1/2 choc. chip Clif bar. Eat the 1st half on the run. OH ya, on Thursday evening after run club, we go to IN & OUT. A 3x3 does the job. (Prescott Mountain Milers)

Great Product for Training/Races
I really like all the GU products. I use gels for long training runs and on race day. I also like the chomps for training. They aren't as convenient as gels for races, but taste great. I like the variety pack because it will allow me to decide which flavor I like best and gives me flexibility on days when I might like more or less caffeine. I also liked that they gave me some of the Roctane product - this stuff is the BEST for races!
Long Run Fuel
I use this product for energy during my long runs. I take one every 45 minutes. I like Vanilla Bean that does not contain caffeine for my early fuel and Expresso Love with caffeine for later in my run. I also like that it has a thick consistency. They are easy to carry and fit into my pocket. They also come in many flavors if I need a change! The Gu boosts my energy level better than the other products! I am definitely a fan of Gu gels!
Rise at 4:30 and take one gu, out the door by the time it kicks in.(5mns),This with a glass of water keeps me running light in the morning. I use one in the middle of the run. recovery is much better. I ame 56 and been running long distance since i was 21. The gu is very compatible.

Great deal on GU
After comparing prices on this product with [...], I decided to order it through RRS, The deal is better and they offered a variety pack, which [...] didn't. Also the GU is great right before a long run and about 1/2 way through my long run to keep me going. Better than the chewy Shot blocks or like products which always got stuck in teeth and became hard to swallow.
I used this product for some extra energy during a relay. I ran 5.6 miles. I took one 45 min. before my run then I took another one after approx. 30 min. of running. It definently helped me keep my energy to finish strong. I have tasted all the flavors. They are all good. My favorite is the tru berry. A friend of mine used one and she liked it too, she thought it was a bit sweet for her.
New Philadelphia, OH
tasty and helpful ...
I liked to try all the different flavors - most off them are pretty tasty. The gel is not to thick so you can easily suck it out. It gave me a nearly immediat energy boost. I had a hard time opening it with sweaty hands. Had to use my teeth and got some plastic parts from the package stuck in my mouth. I am naturally clumsy so it might not be the package - just me!
A great variety and value
I've ordered the variety pack three times now and have always been happy with the product. GUs work for me and I've tried the powerbar, hammer, and clif versions. It's really a personal preference in terms of size, consistency and flavor.
Love that there's a variety pack. Can't imagine just one flavor. Variety of caffeine levels and three roctanes as well.
Goo Saves the Day
I run with a friend who ran in college and uses Goo frequently. I never believed it would make a difference in my day because I am a recreational runner. I tried one after an hour Saturday morning run and I was amazed how I felt. I typically work out harder on SAturday mornings and run longer and after using the Goo, I had more energy and my muscles felt good all day. I was shocked at how the Goo made me feel and ordered a big pack and use is regularly!
The Recreational Runner finds Goo
gu helps improve my performance
I take gu per directions (15 min. before workout and every 45 min. during) and I notice a big difference in my performance and energy level. It's especially great to use before/during running in the extreme heat since it helps balance out your electrolytes and helps to prevent dehydration. It also leads to quicker recovery time!
Tammy the Runner
Great tasting & packed with energy
I take one before my running speed workouts and one after every 5 miles of long distance running and races. I also take one every 45 minutes on endurance cycling workouts or half ironman races. They sit well on my sensitive stomach and seem to give me the boost I need for the next 45 mins to 1 hour of intense activity!

I'm in love with the strawberry banana, and take it on my long runs. Recently, I brought a packet of chocolate to test it out since lotsa people were raving about it. I really didn't care for it. It was harder to swallow for some reason (could be just me) and tasted overly sweet. But, I'm not a chocoholic, so that could explain it. I'm sticking with my strawberry banana :)

Tried the Orange burst for the first time on a 1/2 Marathon. I was truely amazed. I never lost my edge. I took it at the begining and at mile 8. Just was impressed with it for the little investment, how big of a difference it made for me. I will be using it more often for my longer races.

Love the GU! I tried PowerBar Gel because the half marathon I'm planning on running is having those on course. It was awful! The taste was very artifical and chemical-like. I have been using GU on my long runs of over an hour and I like the taste and thicker consistency. I have not had issues with stomach upset or other gastrointestinal problems. I like every flavor in the variety pack. None are too strong, which I was concerned about, especially with the fruit flavors. I would highly recommend you at least try GU, although I will admit that these gel products are mostly about personal preferences (taste, consistency, effect, etc).

I recently decided to give these a try on my long runs (90 mins+). I used the Strawberry Banana and the flavor isn't bad at all...consistency is excellent. Especially compared to the PowerBar brand (which I do not like at all). The first time I followed the recommedation, I took one 15 mins prior, then at 45 mins--got a slight stomach cramp, and 90 mins--total nausea and had to throw up road-side. I also felt as tho I needed a LOT more water than normal after taking them, almost as if they were dehydrating me faster. The next week, I skipped the pre-run shot and did one at 60 minutes--no problem other than thirst, then another one at 2 hrs--again felt like I needed an excessive amount of water to get it down and slight stomach cramp returned, but no puking this time. I can say that there is always an energy boost within 5 minutes of taking a shot, so they do work. But if you have a sensitive stomach, it might not be for you. I'm going to try the HammerGel next on a friend's advice.

Recently started using GU on my long runs training for 1st marathon, and the difference is definitely noticeable. As a 25-year, early morning runner, my favorites runs are before breakfast with little to nothing on my stomach. That works fine for runs of less than an hour, but I struggled when I got an hour into long runs. Now, I down one GU with water 15 minutes before I run and one every 45 minutes during my run, and I've had no problems keeping my energy up all the way through my workouts.

I ordered the chocolate outrage based on a couple reviews below that it tasted like cupcake icing. I wasn't expecting much, but it's true. I think people would eat it as a snack if they could. I tried the Powergel and that's just crap compared to this. Not only is the taste better, but the consistency is much better too. You may need some water to wash it down, but at least you won't have to worry about it spilling all over the place when you rip the top open.

If you're looking for a gel . . . this is it! I've tried all of them! The chocolate outrage tastes like icing on a cake! If you're into gels, GU leads the pack. If you're into chews, try Luna Moons. They're hard to find sometimes, but all easier to eat (smaller than Shot Blocks) and offer an alternative to always using gels.

Gu is the best. I have tried everything and even have trouble drinking gatorade. I can only use the flavors without caffeine (sensitive stomach) so I like lime sublime, but wish there were more choices without caffeine - like vanilla. Love this product! I use it on all my runs that are 6+ miles.

I love GU - beats the ClifShots and Clif Shot Blocks for me hands-down. The 24 pack is awesome - nice mix of flavors, 6 out of 8 of which are caffeinated. Also, a significant savings (approx. 32 cents cheaper per GU with my VIP discount) from buying them at my local running store!

I preferred their Banana flavored GU, but apparently they've discontinued it. I like TriBerry and on my next long run I'll try the Strawberry-Banana.
I used to eat Powerbars on long runs, but I live in a cold climate. The Powerbars ended up frozen solid, and eating one was like trying to eat a 2x4. The gels give me the same kick, and they don't freeze solid. I've used them as cold as 10 degrees above zero and had no problem with them freezing.

Love the Gu. The size makes it easy for me to store 4+ in my pocket in the waist of my shorts which helped when you don't want to carry extra baggage on real long runs. Some flavors just aren't that great, but I think of it more as a wake me up when I use those. Can't go wrong with Chocolate and Vanilla.

The GU gel is OK. You can judge these gels on fact that you don't vomit. They all taste like medicine and have a horrible consistency, like drinking honey. Personally I only use on runs over 1 hr, otherwise I prefer an apple or banana with a flinstones chewable post-run. If you have to suck on of these down, I'd stay away from the chocolate, coffee ones. Also Hammer Gels are a good product if you can find them.

I'm mildly hypoglycemic so it's essential to get a shot of carbs at regular 45 minute intervals during a marathon... or else I crash hard. I've tried half a dozen gels and Gu is the best for me. Some gels give me a quick burst of energy and then let me down quick. Some mess up my stomach. Gu gives sustained energy and doesn't cause any stomach discomfort so long as I get some water with it. It's also rather cheap compared to other brands. It lacks electrolytes so I find myself supplementing with Nuun or electrolyte powder as well.
