Had to switch from Asics Nimbus 15 to this shoe and I'm glad I did. I've had plantar faciatis in my right foot for about a year. These shoes actually helped a lot. I have a very high arch and this shoe conforms to the shape of my foot. I'm not suffering anymore. I do have to really tie the shoes tight because the tongue is very thin.

I fully expected to return these. They look a little funny ( although my husband said they really don't look that clunky and they are certainly more streamlined than other homes!) and that thin little tongue just looked weird. Well what a pleasant surprise! I bought them because I'm doing my first marathon in 6 weeks and my right foot has been killing me i some of my older shoes. I know that my Kinvaras will not protect me at that distance. Well these will- I ran 16 miles today right out of the box- no breakin time needed. My foot didn't hurt at all-amazing and I'm definitely a Hoka believer now!

I've run 3 to 6 mile runs in them so far. They rebound really well. It feels like it springs you into your next step almost. Tons of great cushion. I've even done some trail running in them. It does feel a tiny bit different on the trail. At first I noticed the thickness of the soles on the uneven terrain, but I guess my brain/legs readjusted quickly because by the end of the 3.5 mile run, I didn't notice it anymore.

It could be my imagination, but I feel like my legs recovered more quickly from my runs, or maybe that my legs didn't fatigue as much in the first place.

Also, they don't look nearly as orthopedic as I'd anticipated. They look pretty normal, really.

The toebox is somewhat narrow as other reviewers have pointed out. I don't personally have a problem with it because I have VERY narrow feet, but I could see it bothering someone with wider feet. The rest of the shoe is cut normally, though. The shoes come with two sets of insoles so you can choose which ones you like, or double them up as they suggest for narrow/low-volume feet.

RRS recommends going up 1/2 size, but I found that I had to go down 1/2 size from normal. So when RRS recommends going up 1/2 size, I normally know to buy a size 9. But I needed a size 8.5 in these. I like to use SHOEFITR to get a true size. They compare the shoes you already have to the shoes you want and tell you how they'll fit. Every time I use it, it's correct. I don't know how they do it so accurately. Great tool!

After getting fitted at RR Paramus (and learning I have the highest arches ever), I've been looking for shoes with a ton of arch support. The Cliftons did NOT disappoint. I was nervous about fit, since many purchasers said the toebox was smaller. I'm typically an 8.5, and I get a 9 in running shoes. The 9s fit perfectly. Plenty of room for my toes, and the foot itself is snug. I may replace the laces at some point- they're somewhat slim and loose. Still, I normally run a steady 11 m/m pace, and when I went out last week I sprinted off at a 9 without realizing it. Looking forward to loving these shoes for a long time.

Bought this for running and I love them. I'm a female triathlete. Mostly Sprint & Olympic but planning my first 70.3 this season. I run half marathons for fun. I run randomly. Sometimes 2 miles, sometimes 5 or 10. Depends. (I didn't say I win any of the above events lol) I'm 41, not overweight, very muscular, inconsistent body mechanics depending on fatigue, so joint issues and injuries can arise if I'm not careful. Normal feet, no structural issues. Size 8, bought my size and it fit perfectly. Ironman friend told me these were "life changing" which I couldn't resist. I'm a total gear nerd. These are interesting. Not what I expected. Super light, nice cushion. Not too squishy. I could run on sidewalk for 13 miles in these with no problem. The cushion feels concentrated under metatarsal, ideal for a mid foot striker (which I am) but I tried heel striking and it was fine. In longer distances my form falls apart toward the end, I start off like a Giselle and finish like an Elephant. I was curious if that would be an issue. You get a subtle roll off from the mid foot with the slight rocker panel but it's not forced like the Newtons. Even better when barefoot. The toes spread out and have tons of room. From the heel it seems a little more work for the calves and ankles since you're not tipped forward like you would be in a high offset shoe but no biggie. If you have weak ankles and heel strike, you may need to build up in these. I typically choose a shoe with a 6-7mm offset depending on distance, because zero drop shoes make my toenails fall off and that's no bueno. These are just right. I was running in ON Cloud Surfers, which I thought were great. But I'm loving the Hoka Cliftons. Even if I do feel like a spaz in them. Or maybe I just look hardcore! lol Yeah. Let's go with that.

It's extremlly light weight. I used to have problems with the tendon on my left foot and with this shoe I no longer have problems. I love them I'll definitely buy a second pair. I'm in love with them!

Loved them out of the box they felt perfect. However, they run about a size too large. My feet swell and I did not really want a smaller size. I added 2 liners into the shoe and that made them tunable . I did a 32 miler in them the day I stuffed them with extra support. I would like to try a size or half size down, just to compare. However, they got me through that distance so I will keep them!

                              Best Uses

I'm only giving this lower rating because I wish I had seen a few more critical reviews before I purchased this shoe so I wouldn't be so heartbroken that it wasn't right for me.

I have been wearing the Brooks Launch for three years and am totally loyal to that brand. I wear the Pure Flows for cross training and have had good luck with the Ghost as well. I was looking for a shoe like the Clifton that was lightweight but provided plenty of cushion to save the bottoms of my feet from becoming tender after longer runs. These shoes definitely provide that "running on clouds" feeling and I wish that were enough of a positive to outweigh the negatives because they truly feel fantastic.

After wearing these shoes for a few short 4-6 mile runs I have developed a WICKED case of plantar fasciitis. The shoes are the only variable I've changed in my running so I know they are the cause. Also, I can tell I have changed my gait/stride and am using my quads and groin more than my glutes and hamstrings, which isn't ideal.

The shoe also just feels floppy on my foot. I have a VERY narrow foot and I simply cannot tie the laces tight enough on these shoes to make them feel secure. Also, the ankle polls down my socks which is completely infuriating.

I kept trying to love these shoes because the cushioning truly feels FANTASTIC, but have decided I need to just go back to my tried and true Brooks.

As an "older" runner (it's all in your mind really), I need more cushioning for my knees and hips. I've run in Saucony's for years. Did 1/2 marathon and had considerable hip pain. Just suffice it to say, I got Hoka Clifton's, did several long training runs included a 10 miler. Ran a 10 mile race, walked away from it looking like I had just gone for a stroll. They are wonderful! I bought a second pair I loved them so much. Thought I was going to have to cut down on my running....no more!

I have had a lot of bilateral heel pain for years. Cortisone injections helped temporarily but I ended up having surgery that actually made it worse. Then I had the Extracorporal Shock Wave tx which helped tremendously. I still can't walk barefooted and need to wear extremely comfortable, supportive shoes. The Clifton and Hoka One One brand fill the bill. They are unbelievably the best shoe I have ever worn. I don't have heel pain anymore. Highly recommend these shoes.

They advise ordering a 1/2 size up. I went ahead and ordered my NORMAL size and when the shoes arrived I excitedly pulled them out of the box... whoa, these shoes run very very large. I normally wear a 10 in Brooks but have re-ordered these Hoka's a full size smaller. (9) I will say this; customer service was exceptional when I called to share my experience regarding the erroneous fitting advice recommended on the website. They were very apologetic and expedited me another pair.

I haven't been able to run consistently in a long time due to plantar fasciitis and arch pain. I've been looking for shoes that give me some relief and finally found them in these Hokas. They are pretty lightweight and after about 2 miles I practically forgot I had them on...except that my feet actually felt energized and that's so abnormal for me anymore. I am really happy with this purchase.

I have been wearing Newton for years, my sister recommended I try these and wow, what a different run. Very cushioned, believe they may decrease injuries, or at least I am hoping they will... Last year I had plantar fasciitis and heel spurs which took me out for months. Definitely a different run, could feel it in my calves, but I am actually running faster in these! I ran 5 miles the first day I wore them. Big note: I wear 9 - 9.5 in shoes, in Newton or Brooks I wear 11, in Hoka I wear 10! So, follow the guidance and order 1/2 up and they should fit!

I have read and heard about the Hokas for a couple of years now, especially amongst Ironman and Ultra friends. I didn't like the bulky moonboot look until now. The Clifton is less bulky and weighs no more than my Kinvaras. I tend to wear minimalist footwear but my feet taking a beating when doing down hill work. I plan to continue to train with the Cliftons on hills and use them for 3 road marathons, 3 days in a row. They are nice to wear in the winter, not because they are that warm but, they keep you up above the snow, no wet feet. Only complaint is a fit issue. The top of the shoe is too high for my anatomy and rubs the outside of my ankle. Bigger insoles have somewhat fixed this and I am still working on a good remedy because I otherwise love the shoes.

I am trying these out to see if they help alleviate my plantar fasciitis and so far, so good. I have worn them for some 10-12 mile runs and am really pleased, overall. However, the toe box does run a bit narrow, and I have started to get some blistering on longer runs. There are a few other things I'm not crazy about. The laces are quite stiff, and it is hard to get a secure fit over the heel and the instep. The shoes lack the extra hole at the top if you want to lock in your heel. I love how lightweight these shoes are, but I am wondering how well they will hold up. They run long, so despite the narrow toe box you need to go down half a size at least. Despite all the criticisms I have of these shoes, I am running without pain right now for the first time in months so I am going to stick with them. I might need to cut some holes into the upper to accommodate my toes without blistering. Sad to have to do that to such relatively expensive shoes!

Background: I'm a 43 year old, 20-25 mile per week runner...mix of road, trail, and treadmill. I was noticing joint pains in my knees, ankles, and hips towards the end of my 6-7 mile runs. In addition to the occasional ibuprofen, I thought I'd try some new shoes. I've had them for about a month. These shoes have virtually eliminated my joint pains.. presumably bc of the extreme cushiony soles. I did have to adjust my gait a bit: shorter stride and more mid-foot strike. I gave the shoe 4 stars for several reasons: shoe laces are slippery so I feel like they loosen up during a run; while downhill running, the shoe feels less stable probably also bc of my 'new' mid-foot strike; shoe is not great on trails or uneven terrain also bc it feels less stable.
Overall, these are working great for me. My joints are happy, so I'm happy.

I just love these cute lightweight ClIfton Hokas.
I broke my foot and was looking for a cushiony shoe to restart my walk, run, cycling and gym training. These shoes are perfect!!

I really wanted to like these. I think they would have been a 5 star shoe but the toe box width was just not wide enough for me so I had to return them. They are very light and cushiony but yet feel like a controlled ride. I was very pleased that they had just a 5mm drop from heal to toe. I needed just a tiny bit more width and they would have been great. (but prob not enough to try them in a wide)

This is such a great shoe with awesome cushion for long distance runs, but the lower drop in the heel makes my lower back of my legs work harder on my runs, causing calve pain. On the positive note, the cushion provides a painfree run for my feet and minimizes knee pain. I went back to my Glycerin 12, which resulted in no calve pain, but not enough cushion for my feet for long runs. If you have issues with knee pain and don't mind the lower heel drop, I highly recommend the Hoka Clifton for your long distance runs.
