The Perfect Mode Of Transportation

The New Balance 993 is the perfect running shoe. While not light weight and intended for racing, it does provide the cushion, comfort, and stability for harsh training conditions. If a racing shoe would be compared to a Porsche, the New Balance 993 is a BMW M5 (high performance luxury sedan). The New Balance 993 is a trustworthy shoe, it is going to take you hundreds of miles without concern. The durable soles and well designed uppers have never failed me over the years. The Abzorb technology in the heel and forefoot reduce your impact energy from being sent back up to your body. I once went to a runners clinic where a representative had a ball made of the Abzorb technology. Even though it felt similar to rubber, no matter how hard you threw this ball to the ground, it would not bounce. It transferred all downward energy outward and not back up. This demo alone sold me on New Balance and got me out of a brand I had been loyal to for years. No regrets. Styling? Well, it has been said these shoes are a bit old fashioned looking, a little retro. While they don't have glitz, glare, and wild colors, this runner could care less. New Balance designed a great shoe many years ago and only made slight tweaks of improvement. It must be tough for New Balance to redesign perfection! I ran as a collegiate athlete to many accolades. My body as acquired many aches and pains over the years but I still run because I love it. My New Balance 993 allow me this opportunity 75 miles a week, where so many other shoes have failed.

Best shoe for the money!

5

I run 40 to 60 miles per week (year-round) and compete in everything from 5K to 50K races. I train and compete in these shoes. I have worn Asics Gel Kayanos, NB991s, NB992s, NB2001s, and I currently alternate between the NB993s and the NB2002s. Of all the shoes mentioned above, the NB993s are the best. They provide great cushioning, they are very durable, they look great, and they are reliable. I never get any surprises when I'm running in these shoes. They perform the best on pavement, but are fine on firm gravel surfaces or dry trails. If you need more traction, the NB2002s are better. On the whole, this is the best shoe on the market. You get better durability, reliability, and appearance than the similarly-priced Gel Kayanos, and they have better durability in the heel, and are a better overall value than the NB2002s[...]Additionally, when these shoes inevitably outlive their life span for running, they are great for the gym, casual wear, or yard work.

Not 991, but the next best thing.

5

I have worn 6 pair of the 991's and still have one pair in the box. It was my favorite shoe ever. I ordered 4 pair online before they were completely discontinued. I tried on a pair of the 992's and they were horrible the toe box was completely different. I tried on the 993's and they are not the 991's, but they are the closest thing to them. Great shoe will be wearing these until I run out unless they reissue the 991's I mainly use these for everyday use after working at Footlock during Christmas season nothing gave me the support and cusion I needed working a 16 hour day until I found the 991 back in 1999.Now I will not wear anything else for daily use.

Solves my pronation problem

4

I am a walker. I do 4 miles on my treadmill 5-6 day a week. In the late spring to early fall, when there is enough daylight, and it is not over 90 or under 60 I do four mile in my neighborhood park. I buy a new pair of 993's every 6 months. There is no break in period. I would feel comfortable doing a half marathon with a pair right out of the box. I have no problems with my feet or knees. The shoe is built to correct pronation and it works. I really like the shoe. I have no problem ordering the shoe online. I never thought I would order shoes on line. I wear custom made arch supports. My shoe size is 14 d. I used to have to find a store that would order the shoes for me. Now I cut out the middle man and order the shoes myself. The 993 is a great shoe.

I have been running in ...

5

I have been running in New Balance, 900 model shoes since they first came out in the 1980'S ,the shoe has continued to improve, while the price has stayed pretty close to its original 90 bucks.Furthermore, I now run 20 miles a week on four running days ,about 1000 miles per year.I have found I can do this on one pair of shoes and not get hurt. This shoe is very durable ,supportive, stable, and comfortable. What it is not is fast ,but neither am I anymore. I WANT TO RUN INJURY FREE AS LONG AS I CAN.With this shoe I am able to do just that.I have tried other shoes over the years often because someone at a running shoe store told me no real runner uses those things . So I tried something lighter, faster made with the lastest technology only to have shin splints, knee pain, calf pulls, and even a stress fracture in my ankle. I will continue to run in these shoes, because despite what all the running shoe experts say I Have found nothing that compares,I love them!

20 years... and still running Strong!

5

I started buying the 993's when they were still 992's, and have kept right on replacing the ones I've wore out. Great shoes for just about any occasion. Running, walking, Nautilus,or business casual. The combination of gray suede leather and nylon fabric construction wears like iron. But, a friend told me that he had a problem with the toe stitching coming loose in several of his 993's. I've not had that problem, but New Balance might consider cutting the suede toe cap slightly larger to avoid the problem. All in all, its a great shoe and at 71 years of age, I'm still kicking, running and walking in my 993's...

Better walking shoe than running shoe

4

Although this shoe is categorized as a running shoe, I think it better serves as a walking shoe insofar as it isn't breathable and lightweight enough for serious running. I also don't feel that the sole tread design is condusive to running as some other shoes such as the ASICS. The shoe is nice looking/finished but a has an "USA" heel tag that isn't necessary. Shoe is comfortable, serves well for walking and periods of standing and has a nice secure fit, not to tight, doesn't bind in any stride. Although it might be a bit over priced, it should wear well based on construction is a good shoe and overall am satisfied.

Support

5

I am tired of shoes that quickly wear out and lose their integrity. I don't run regularly, but when I do I want to rely on shoes that can withstand my admittedly harsh routine and daily lifestyle. I am not easy on shoes, and I have finally found some that can stand up to me. My 993s are the most durable, stable, and useful shoes I have ever purchased, and I can't believe the deal we found on them at Road Runner. We will definitely be back for more 993s and more Road Runner Sports.

Superb Shoes!

5

I have started jogging again after a few years off. I purchased a pair of 991s when I was running previously, and loved them. They have since been retired, and I for some reason purchased another brand. I've now returned to New Balance 993, and couldn't be happier! I'm 6'4", 200 lbs., and nearly 50 years old. These shoes give me the best cushioning and support of any shoe I've had. I may even buy another pair in a different color so I can rotate them. Excellent shoes.

Cadillacs for your feet

I was turned onto the 990 in the mid-1980s by a friend's father who worked 12+ hour days on movie sets. I figured if he had several pairs they must be good stuff and since then I always have at least one pair of 99x in the closet. Since these are a bit heavy albeit VERY comfortable I tend to use them either in the gym or bumping around while preferring Asics for running because they are cooler and lighter. People either tend to love the look of the 99x or hate it - my wife being of the later category and me, well I keep buying them ;)

993 until I'm 93

5

I've been using this shoe to run in 5 marathons and 6 half-marathons over the past 6 years. I am 53 and this shoe is consistent and has never let me down. I hope to keep running for the next few years and the New Balance 993 will be my shoe. I wear the shoes to work in - I've been teaching for 32 years ,and I wear the shoes too run in- planning 2 half-marathons in 2011

New Balance Has Done It Again

5

I have a collection of New Balance shoes. After about 6 months of useage in the parks they become work shoes where I stand on them all day. They could last another 3 - 6 months. Beyond that they can cut the grass lasting another 3-6 months. The sizing has been the same for the many years that I have used them and that makes New Balance products easy to purchase.

Great Running Shoe and Made in the USA

5

I recently had some brooks running shoes that wore out in 3 months and went back to new balance because it is hard to find a running shoe in my width. Nothing feels as comfortable as the 993's after trying on 50 different pairs of shoes. And to the people out there that think the USA is tacky on the back are crazy. Everyone should buy a pair of new balance because they are made in american and it keeps americans employed.

One Word "HEAVENLY"

5

I have bought over 50 shoes looking 4 something that didn't hurt my feet. I have been diagnosed with Neuropathy and could not find a single shoe that wasn't hell on my feet. New Balance caters to the customer providing correct widths and one doesn't fully understand how important this is until you experience the pain from ill-fitting shoes. Will never buy another type of shoe. New Balance and Road Runner customer 4 LIFE.

I buy a pair of 993s every 3 months!

5

I've got 235 lbs. that pound on these running 15 miles a week mostly on asphalt and they take a lick and keep on kicking. Great as a stability shoe as well. They're heavy but so am I. If you're a big lug that's not built for speed but you put in the miles so you can still eat whatever you want, these are the shoes for you. Best to have two pair, switch off every time you run and replace one pair every three months.

A must-have

5

Due to a foot injury 3 yrs. ago, this is pretty much the shoe that I wear day and night. I wear the 4E to make room for the cushions and pads that I must have in the left shoe. I think I'm on my 4th pr. now. This shoe provides padding, is good for my low arch and has no lumps and bumps often found under the insole. If they stop making this, I'm in trouble.

Good but less stable than Brooks

4

I bought this shoe because it is a classic and additionally I liked the color scheme. I found the new balance to be comfortable and a good fit, however, it waffles during a long run. A new pair has less support for a pronator like me than a 2 year old pair of Brooks Beast or similar Brooks shoe. All in all, a good buy but I could not run extended distance in this shoe.

Stability Plus Shoe

5

This is a great shoe, once you buy this shoe you will never buy another. I had never worn a stability plus shoe before, which I should have been, considering I'm 200lbs. The first time I put the shoe on it was like running on clouds. I run about 20 miles a week and these shoes have saved my knees. I will never buy anything else.

NB 993

5

New Balance quality seems to have slipped some in the past few years. I keep migrating back to the 990 series, in this case the 993 as the best bang for the buck and durability. I walk 5 miles every day (have not missed in 18 months). Other NB products wear out in a 2-300 miles, these will last well over 500, in some cases 700 miles. Great shoe, great price.

I buy this product year after year

5

I wear this shoe year round and use it for all my casual activities and chores around the house. It is comfortable, provides good stability, and pronation control. I buy 1/2 size too large, and 1 size wider than I normally wear because I find them more comfortable and capable of accommodating thicker socks during the winter months.

Hit the streets running

5

I believe to have found my new running buddy in the form of the 993 Running Shoe! Right out of the box these shoes handled a fast paced 6 mile run and left my feet feeling awesome. No break in period is needed and they have performed great during the hot Michigan weather. Not the most stylish shoe out there but I feel that the only ones looking at my style are the ones I am passing!

Great casual shoe

5

I use this shoe as a casual weekend shoe. So far, it's among the most comfortable running shoes I've ever had. I have not used it for running yet, and likely won't. It does not feel as supportive as the shoes I typically use (Asics Kayano or Kinsei, or Saucony Hurricane). I highly recommend the shoe as a casual shoe, it's exactly what I wanted.

NB 993

5

I first got these for my dad, and then after hearing how much he liked them, I decided to get a pair for myself. My dad had used the 991, but after being disappointed by the 992, I switched him over to the kayano series. after hearing how the 993 was more of a return to the 991 (his favorite shoe), he decided to give the 993 a try. After wearing them myself, all I have to say is I am very impressed with this shoe. The fit really is great right out of the box, and the cushioning in the shoe is better than anything I've ever worn (previously ran in the nike air max 2009). I am 185 lbs and my dad is 210, and we both love the cushioning this shoe provides. It is both soft and supportive at the same time. Another plus is that the shoe wears extremely well. The upper is very well constructed, and since I was used to seeing my dad's kayanos' uppers begin ripping after a few months, i was quite surprised to see the 993s still looking more or less new after 3+ months of wear. having said that, there are 2 areas where I think this shoe can be improved. the first is with the breathability. the mesh on the shoe is not the same open mesh most modern running shoes, and while this helps the appearance, it does make the shoe a little hot. obviously, this is not a problem on winter runs. also the lining of the shoe is not a moisture wicking material. the second and more important issue I have with the 993 is the outsole durability. surprisingly, it is the forefoot, not the heel, that is the area of concern. New Balance used a lot less rubber in the forefoot because they added more flex grooves for added flexibility than in previous models, but this comes at the expense of the forefoot outsole durability. also the somewhat aggressively designed outsole, which helps with traction, only causes the already limited amount of rubber to wear down even faster. Still, the comfort this shoe provides is unbelievable, and in my opinion, the positives of the shoe far outweigh the negatives. Don't let the retro look fool you; this shoe is loaded with modern tech and it feels great. I would definitely get this shoe again.

Run about 12 to 16 miles a week very good shoe another plus is that it is made in the USA. Really just use on asphalt road sometimes on the treadmill depending on the weather. Would buy this shoe again read the reviews there are a lot of them and the majority are all good.

GREAT SHOE

5

Best running shoe I've ever owned. Have worn this style (when I can find it) for years. I'm a big guy (6'6", 250lbs) with long, narrow feet (14B). It's amazing to be a tall, 'fat guy' with long, skinny feet - NB is the only shoe I've found that provides shoes that cater to the heavy runner with narrow feet AND the shoes run true to size. Just wish they were a bit less pricey, but my Club discount injected some reality into what I paid. I will never buy another style running shoe as long as I can get these or ones like them from NB & RRS.

5

I run about 30 miles per week. I will be increasing my mileage in January. I have ran in the 990 series for over 20 years. I wear a size 12.5 shoe with a B width. It is the most comfortable shoe I have ran in. My only complaint is I think the heel of the shoe wears to fast.

Great find!

5

What a find! I have really wide feet and crazy high arches, and am a chronic supinator and these shoes really fit the bill! I do feel like the arches could be a bit higher, but it's hardly the shoe's fault that I have ridiculously high arches. Really pleased with this shoes and will order a couple more while I can!

I actually use it for walking, gym, and sometimes running. It is a good shoe to travel in especially if you do not want to tote more than one athletic shoe. Good overall performance. I did buy a different orthotic that gave me better support than the one it came with.

I was elated to learn though that the company had again upgraded to 993s which includes a combination of foam and gel. I think they're lighter than 992s too and the feel on first putting on a pair of 993s is very similar to putting on a pair of 991s. They did keep the multiple color options of the 992 line so you can get these in black, grey, white. Overall, I am extremely happy with this product.

I have used the 990 series for many years and have had multiple pairs of each one. This is the only one I will NOT be getting another pair of. The problem is the sole. It falls apart. Instead of a solid one piece rubber sole it is made of a few different pieces and those pieces come unglued from the midsole. It is a stupid design and should be discontinued ASAP. I loved the previous incarnations of this shoes due to their fit and durability but this one is VERY disappointing.

5'10/240 lbs. Not a runner, but the 990 series with SuperFeet Orange insoles are the only shoes I can wear without aggravating my plantar fasciitis. Only 4 stars because the 993 are cut smaller than previous models in the series, so I have to wear them with a dress sock instead of the padded SmartWool socks I prefer. This is the best in the series. But I learned the hard way that "true fit" didn't work for me. One size up is better than the true fit which set my feet on fire near the end of an eight mile hill run. Support is superior. Lightness is uplifting. Think NB changed initial recommendation on sizing from one size up to true fit, but I won't make that mistake again.

The 992 was so bad, a brick, that I'm concerned with so many negative reviews of the 993. While there are more favorable reviews I suspect the 993 is not much better than the 992 which sucked. So I don't know what model to buy but the 993 sounds like a no go.

6'1 240lbs, average 20-28 miles a week. Tried all of them...Brooks, Mizuno, Nike, Asics,Saucony, Pearl Izumi. Tried these based on a friends recommendation. Needless to say they are not flashy. Tried them with some green SuperFeet Insoles...Remarkable!! Foot is stable, no more ankle pains, cushioning is all there, no sore legs or calves anymore. These are by far the GREATEST Running Shoe ever. I never considered New Balance Running Shoes in the past...wish I had..could had saved me some major Cash.

Like others, I've been using the 900 series for years. The 993 are by far the best yet. If you've used the 900 series, just pop on a pair of 993's, you'll instantly fell the difference. The fit is wonderful, the heel feels so much better than the 992's or 998's I wore in the past.

I have been running in these shoes for 5 yrs. and decided it was time for a change. I tried Nike, Adidas, neither of these compared. In the end i sent them back and ordered my 7th pair in the 990 series. The 993 is also in my opinion much better than the 992. Lighter and more stable. I will never think of switching again.

I loved the 990 series, except for the 992. So, I was hoping for a return to form with with 993. No such luck. I now have terrible problems with one knee and with both IT bands! Never had this before. I wish the 991 was still available....

The 990's are the best running shoes ever. Twice I ran in different shoes and both times went straight back to the 990's. Also I got hit by a car in the 992, no joke, and I am still running. If that does not say it all I don't know what does!!

My third pair of NB 990 series shoes. They keep getting a ton better every model put out. I started with the 991s and then the 992s and now I have the 993s. I put a bit over 400 miles on each and they are all fantastic shoes. If you care about your hips and knees and put alot of miles in your legs, get these.

These are the worst shoes I've worn in 37 years of running. Feel cheap, look cheap, fit cheap--the only thing not cheap is the price. heavy runner, 35 miles a week, i've run over 100 marathons and ultra incl. 8 iron man distance tris. lots of good and bad shoes--never one this bad.

Much improved from the 992 (absolute low), the 993 finally recaptured the midsole of the 991 (still top design) as well as the heal support. I ran in these right out of box after 200 miles, the midsole gave out and plastic U on the back peeled off...suffice to say, I was not impressed.
