I'm a mid level runner, mixing up between VFF for short <3 mile runs and Newton Distance for longer stuff.
I have been looking for something in between for a while, specifically a minimalist trail shoe since Newton's lugs don't perform well off paved roads. I wanted something that has more cushion and protection that five fingers but not all the bulk of other trail shoes. The issue I found with other minimalist trail shoes (Pure grit, Innov8, Kinvara TR and others, I tested everything out there..) was that they were to flat in the front - forward rolling was fine, but with a 'natural' forefoot strike I want to be able to use the foot's flexibility and roll sideways too. Initial contact on the outside of the foot and then a rolling motion inwards as the muscles flex and cushion the step.
The 1010v2 Trail is perfect here. It has serious lugs and good damping in the front but has a very natural feeling and smooth transition for a natural motion. By far the best I have felt out there.
After a few runs and a 4 hr hike in the mountains the 1010v2 feels slightly more rugged than the first one - more like a shoe than the very minimal glove upper of the first version, but is still very light and flexible. Toebox is very generously sized which I like, but some might find too large. Overall fit on my foot is great.
The reason I don't give this shoe five stars is the design of the heel cap. All my other shoes today have a cut out at the very top of the cap to not interfere with the Achilles tendon. For some reason this show does not, a feature manufacturers figured out years ago.. So I have a blister right there from the top of the heel cap chafing. I'll see if it adjusts and wears in and update my review if so.

Business Traveler Amazed at this Shoe
I am a long time passionate runner (since 1998) and business traveler I have been off the roads for about 5 years and focused only on trais. Traveling in major cities doesnt lend itself well to finding trails so I needed a road shoe as well. Since I went barefoot 5 years ago with the Five Fingers, first generation and recently went into my 4th pair with the Spyridon, I have been struggling trying to find a pair of road shoes that have the cushion and stability of the Brooks Cascadia, my alternate trail shoe. I have tried more than I care to go through. I have been explorng New Balance for trail shoes and wanted the 380's for the road. I took a chance with the 1010 v2 for trails and almost was going to return them hen they became my choice while having to run in a neighborhood nearby. To my amazement, fresh out of the box, they responded better than i could have imagined. I am going back to exchange them for a half size ssmaller but I found my versatile shoe and cant be happier.
Obstacle Course Racer!
I am an active obstacle course racer and LOVE these shoes. The treads provide fantastic traction and transition well from water and mud to the wood and poly surfaces of the obstacles.
The uppers easily shed mud and do a fantastic job of draining after being submerged. The only detractors that I have are they ran a bit narrow in the toe box and the lugs wear out quickly. Keeping them on the trail and off asphalt and concrete surfaces will prolong their life.
I've only had these a few weeks, but love them already. They seem to run a half size big, but that's not a huge deal. After running on the road for a few days, 5 or so miles the outer treads seem to be wearing a bit quick, but at 220+ that's about normal for me. After several trail runs through the woods with fallen leaves and various sized roots in the trail I see where these shoes excel. Excellent traction even with a little dew on the ground.
just not for me!
These shoes did not fit my feet at all!. The footbeds contours do not match mine and they just feel terrible. I am unable to say anything else about these shoes which I realize may not be helpful. Sorry! New Balance, back they go!
