these running shoes are specially built for runners 180 lbs and over. Combine these with 3/4 graphite inserts and running becomes an actual joy !!! I ran my police agility exam in these and dropped two minutes off my time because of how well my feet felt !! Go NEW BALANCE !!!!!!!!!!!

I have been running in this shoe for about eight years and have used about five pairs per year and have never had a problem. I run anywhere from 50 to 70 miles per week during this time. The only drawback is their weight which can turn to an advantage when you put on flats for racing. When I change to another shoe that is lighter I run into problems. I am 5'5" and 145 and slightly pronated and the shoes last for about 550 mi. I hope they never stop making this shoe. The anonymous rater above must work for asics!

These shoes hurt my feet. They have Hardly any Cushioning so my feet ache even after a 2 mile walk! I just bought the asics 2140 and they are so much better than these.

Excellent trainer. I'm 6'0 and weight 155. I found these shoes great for marathon training, when you don't really care about the extra weight, and want the extra stability and cushion. I normally have fit problems, but these were among the very few pairs where I had no hot spots, and no blistering. (Of course, that means they'll redesign them). They lasted about 350 miles, and looked good, but I never take shoes farther than that. I love these shoes.

5'11", 215lbs, 12-15 mi/wk.....What happened to this shoe since last year? The pair of 1220s I bought last year was great (approx 300 miles), but the recent pair I just bought is completely shot at around 160 cushioning, soles worn out, and shin splints.....AT 160 MILES!! Time to try something new.

Mon, January 12,2009:
This shoe used to be great. Then they started making them in China and my mileage drop from 400 miles per pair to 170 miles per pair. I believe New Balance doesn't even make these anymore? They have sold the rights to another company? Its disappointing when a shoe company ruins a good thing. Some stats on me - I weigh 225 lbs and run mostly marathons. Right now I'm looking for my next shoe, but have had no luck on a replacement.

the shoes literally 'stink' like cat pee if they get wet. Smell goes on for months. Otherwise great shoe.

I have run just over 10,500 miles and 22 marathons in the past 5 years, and have gone through 22 pairs of 1220s, and have another 10 new pairs in the closet. I number and track the mileage on every pair of shoes and I average 300-325 miles before I retire a pair. I also run on multiple Asics, Adidas, Brooks, and Mizuno shoes, but these are consistently the best shoe for me and only shoe I wear for marathons. Six feet, 175 lbs.

I have been wearing NB for a long time, and this is by far the best shoe I've ever had. I am a heavy heel striker, over pronator and have a slsight rolling action in my nknees, so cushioning and stability is a must for me. The 1220 delivers better than anything else...991s, 998s, 1300s, M2000s. I hope NB has the sense to leave this shoe alone and keep making it, as the later versions are not nearly as comfortable.

My brother just bought a pair of these shoes (Jan 2008). The first time they got wet, the terrible cat pee smelled occurred. Nothing makes it go away. I strongly recommend that people not purchase these shoes.

To the reviewer complaining of the 'cat pee smell'. I've heard of that problem. It was isolated to a shipment of glue that they got. Once the glue got wet, a terrible 'cat pee' smell resulted. You're right, nothing makes it go away. The issue has been fixed. It had effected a few different models, not just this one. Every model that used that shipment of glue was effected. But no more problems now. Different glue. It was just used around late 2005 early 2006.

I'm a heavy guy -- 6'0 and 225. Size 4e. These 1220's feel great. I've bought a 1/2 dozen pair. I recently tried another NB shoe because I wanted an updated style. Sent it back. These shoes last a long time for me because I'm doing about 10 miles a week. Think that I will buy 4 pair within the next 6 months -- just in case RR discontinues.

This is my 4th pair of 1220, The rollerball in the shoe keeps me walking and runnig in a straight line. Because of my pronation ankles and knees don't hurt as much. Something to get use to, and they are very good

The shoes are great, but they start to stink. I have been a NewBalance wearer (wide feet) for 20+ years. They used to last 18mths, hen I was running. Up to 3yrs when I was just using them for casual. Now after 6mths the sole, not the shoe, the plastics/rubber in the sole starts to stink like cat pee. Nothing will remove the smell.

I have honestly lost count of how many pairs of NB 1220s I have owned throughout my years of running in the service. I have flat feet on a large frame (180+) - these shoes not only give me the support I need, but they hold up well for many months of physical training. If you have not given this shoe a try - I highly recommend that you do. It took me a while to find them, but I have not looked back ever since. I hope NB continues this model, as no other shoe in the NB inventory or by another maker comes close to getting the heavy runner equation correct.

Mon, August 13,2007:
I used to think this was a 5 star shoe, but I've noticed the duration of the shoe has decreased since they started producing them in China. I used to get 400 miles out of a pair and am now down to 150 miles. They are still keeping me injury free, but it's getting costly to replace them every month. I need a replacement for this shoe and just can't find it...

I'm an avid runner, 5'11"/175 lbs with supination on my left foot, pronation on my right. (Obviously, I wear orthotics.) I have tried numerous shoes over the years and this is by far the best when it comes to support and cushioning. I even tried the a couple pairs of the 1221, assuming it was an "upgrade" of the 1220 - not even close! Besides "mediocre" breathability (I can deal with that) there are no absolutely complaints at all with this shoe. In fact, I have 6 pairs in my closet since I'm worried about it being discontinued at some point.

These are the best running shoes for me. I had Osgood-Schlatter Disease which affect the knees as a child, I am now 34 and still have the same pain. After a run my knees would hurt so much that I found it difficult to walk up stairs. A friend turned me on to the 1220s and now can run 6-12miles without pain. I've tried other shoes, 1221, 1222, kayano, 956, and my knees would kill. Went back to the 1220s (thank you RRS).

This is the best shoe I have ever run in. I'm 5'11'' and 185lbs and used to get shin splints all the time. I've tried the 1222's and they stink. Thank the maker for classics! My only complaint...feet can't breathe well.

I did a lot of reviewing of shoes before I purchased the 1220's on this website. The 1220's rated fairly well. I cannot say that I'm totally impressed with them though. I had a pair of NB 643 before the 1220's. The 1220's have a narrower toes box than the 643's and consequently had to return my first pair as they were too small. Even after I have sized up, I still think the toe box is giving me problems as I am developing terrible blisters on my second toe to the right of my big toe. The toe box on the 1220's is not manufactured from a breathable mesh -- like the 643's -- so if you sweat a lot like me you may have problems with your toes developing blisters. My feet get very hot as well because they aren't breathable. I may return these shoes.

For the high mileage runner who wants a good mix of stability and cushioning, this shoe is the best. I have tried the 1221, 1222, and a number of non-NB shoes, and this is clearly the best one of its type. Before this shoe I had knee pain while running that got noticeably better while running in the 1220. I have used it for long trail runs on improved trails and it is also good for that. I have been keeping ahead 3 pairs in case it is ever discontinued. I do have to change out pairs by 6 months because they lose their cushioning, even though they look fine.

I tried the 1221 and the Gel Kayano X and they didn't work for me. I have been wearing the 1220 for over 5 years and have not found anything better yet. I have a medium arch, weigh 155 lbs, and have Fred Flintstone toes. The toe box is wide and my toes are relaxed when I run. The 1220 is a bit heavier than similar shoes, but very comfortable and worth the trade off.

I just ordered my 7th pair of 1220's. They are by far my favorite running shoes. I keep trying 'new and improved' shoes (from New Balance and others) and keep coming back.

Mon, December 18,2006:
This is the best shoe I have run in. It has superior cushioning and support. I have run the Chicago Marathon 5 times in these shoes. I am injury prone and I find that the NB 1220 lessens the likelihood that an injury will occur. I have tried several other expensive shoes, including the NB 1221. None really compare, and I fear the day that RRS "runs out." Having said this, I find that it breaks down pretty quickly, does not have a durable sole, and is heavy. But, I continue to buy it because it is the most dependable shoe on the market.

Mon, November 27,2006:
This is the best running shoe I have ever run in. When they originally discontinued it, I tried several shoes, all of which gave me some kind of problem.. splints, knees, back, etc. I panicked and thought my running days were over. Then RRS brought this shoe back as a classic.. I will never buy another pair of shoes !!!!

Thu, November 23,2006:
I wore the 1220 for several years when it was a standard shoe for New Balance. When they discontinued it I purchased 5 pairs for my "inventory". About 1 year ago I had used my last pair and could not find anymore. For me this was a tough year because I couldn't find a running shoe that I felt comfortable with. Fourtantly RoadRunner Sports began to sell the 1220 as a "Classic". I immediately purchased 5 pairs to have for the next couple of years. I have run two half marathons in the last couple of months along with my weekly running and I couldn't be happier with my 1220's. Thank you RoadRunner Sports for bringing the 1220 back.

Excellent running shoes for the everyday runner. This are the ones I use for my everyday run. Very stable and confortable. I've use this 1220's on sand, dirt, hills, asphalt. Not for competitive running, they're too heavy. I'm going through my second pair right now. First pair lasted 3 years, and I used them 5+ days a week. Excellent buy!!
