Lunar Eclipse - Good stuff

I've learned that when a pair of shoes feels great the first time you try them on...buy them and come back in two days for another pair because soon they will stop being made! Unfortunately, I'm the most popular size in the world (11.5) so I always have to run around town looking for a good shoe in stock, settle for an ugly color option, or not get anything on sale. You fellow 11.5'ers know what I mean. I don't think anyone in retail ever heard of OPTIMAL ORDER QUANTITY. Anyhow, I visited RR and was directed to the "stability" options after the usual fit testing. I had only three options in my size, some decent colors and definitely nothing on sale : (. The first two had the "I fit everyone syndrome" and were not for me. When I tried on the Lunars...I got that same feeling when I tried on my favorite running shoes of 10 years ago. The offset laces really made a difference by keeping pressure off the top of your foot and where far back enough to keep you from having to constantly re-tie your laces to get an optimal fit. I have a C-D width and the Lunars fit like a second layer of skin....keepers...until I tried on both. The left was perfect and the right had a large pucker on the top at the bottom of the laces above the toe box. Definitely not the same. Maybe the right side was made on a Friday afternoon at 4:59pm. I asked the salesperson to see if there was another pair to try on....nope, these babies were the only pair within a 100 miles. The 11.5 curse strikes again! Salesperson offered to order a new pair & have it dropped shipped to my home. It's ok to wait a few days to avoid a mismatched pair. Us 11.5's are used to waiting. The package arrived in 3 days looking like it was dragged behind the UPS truck, stomped by the driver and then attacked by a pack of wild dogs. The Lunars thankfully survived unharmed. I was out the door in the next 10 minutes ready for a first run and I wasn't disappointed. After the first mile, everything on the shoe seemed to drop into place and felt very comfortable and light. What a difference from my Nike Pegashits that are now in the trash. I would recommend good running socks. They made a difference in this shoe. Remember my rule of buying two? I went back a happy customer to get that backup pair and avoid my mistake of 10 years ago...guess what. Out of stock...11.5 curse again. Ugghh, I could make millions just selling 11.5 shoes, 36x34 pants and L shirts that aren't made like a sack. Buy this shoe (or two) if you can. Good luck fellow 11.5'ers...someday we will be regulated to mail-order only.

Surprising, support & lightweight combo

To describe myself, 20s and getting back into running after some time off from injury. In the past I have always run on prepared surfaces like tracks and field turf, but now I run predominantly on pavement. These shoes were exactly what I was looking for. Seemed with the shoes offering the best support/stability, they were always heavier or more cumbersome than was ideal. These do a good job of walking that fine line of both lightweight, while also offering great support and stability. I'm not wild about the tread on sole. By that I mean the traction, there is actually a shock like part of the sole in the middle front that is great for stability. However, the traction on the sole is a little shallow, so I can see them balding relatively quickly from pavement. With all the said, the minor complaints I have about the tread are not enough for me to lower from 5 stars. Love the cushioning, love the support, love the fit, love the lightweight feel.

This is my first pair of Nike running shoes. This is a true Stability Plus shoe, huge arch support, massive heel cushioning, pronation control, but they also move a little low. So you can get a good cardio workout if you want, or just run slow like Stability Plus shoes allow. These are the lightest shoes I've ever had and the uppers are seamless stretchy fabric so there's nothing to rub against. The fit is excellent as there is very little tying of laces to fret over, they are pretty much fitted and you just shore them up a bit. Stability Plus shoes are great sure they're cheaters but how else am I supposed to run 10+ miles at the drop without getting hurt? Use them to build confidence so you can see what it's like to run 10, 13, or more miles without stopping. I'll be watching the RRS Endangered Alert on these. Thanks Nike for not abandoning the genre and blindly following trends

Best shoes ever

5

These shoes were a welcome change. I am 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. For years I've purchased ASICS Gel Kayanos, Nimbus, Cumulus and Brooks adrenaline. I usually shy away from Nike as they feel narrow. These shoes are a godsend. The sock like upper fits your foot like a neoprene glove. Cushioning is great. Arch support is very good. The best part is these shoes feel several ounces lighter than the other shoes listed above. I have worked up to running 5 miles minimum each time I run 4-5 times a week and I have no issues with these shoes. My only issue is I'm not sold on the durability of the sole. I run mostly on treadmill so the little bit of road running I've done seems to have worn away more of the sole than I expected. In the end, given the comfort level, I really don't care much about that though. excellent, excellent shoes.

Eclipse 4 is great - why can't I find the 5 or 6?

4

I had moved away from Nike many years ago because in my opinion they quit making decent moderate-support level shoes. I saw the specs on the Eclipse 4 and thought maybe they were back in the game. I am 6' 1"; 175 lbs; 61 yrs old; about 30 miles a week; narrow flat feet; use fairly rigid otc inserts. I was looking for a support shoe with more cushioning in the mix. Have run in the Eclipse 4 for a few months. Not perfect but I do like the balance of support-cushion. No complaints although the 'off-kilter' lacing is a little funky. Only concern for my friends at RRS is that I don't see newer models of this shoe for sale. What's up with that? Guess I shoulda grabbed a couple more pair of the 4's when I had the chance.

Great shoes

5

Light weight shoe that still provides exceptional cushion. It has been a while since I ran in a Nike shoe but after wearing these I wish I'd tried them sooner. I'm currently recovering from a torn patella tendon and after 6 months I'm running. I needed a shoe with cushion that was light that wouldn't wear me out and these have been perfect. I'm only going about 6-7 miles a week but I know these shoes are good for much longer distances. I wouldn't change a thing. This is one of those shoes that really does well for me and I plan to buy more while they're around.

Great engineering and construction

5

I normally wear orthotics to take pressure off the ball joint under my little toes, but I don't with these shoes. What seems more amazing to me is that the shoes inhibit pronation which would seem to put more pressure on the outside of the foot, but they don't seem to. Everybody's foot construction and mechanics are different, so all I can say is that these are great for me. But I suspect that they will be great for lots of people -- they look and feel like someone put a lot of thought into the design and materials.

I did two triathlons in the last year, and was using the Asics Noosa Tri shoes, which were good, but not a lot of support. After my second tri, I knew I needed some more support in my next shoe, and these were on sale. These shoes are light, comfortable, and seem to be holding up pretty well so far. I've run about 36miles in them in the last three weeks, and am already thinking about buying a second pair to have ready to go when these ones don't have anymore life in them.

Great Overall. Outer Needs Work.

4

Having ran in the previous version of the shoe, the LunarEclipse 4's are definitely a nice upgrade. A lot of really nice improvements overall. Cushioned for long distance runs and breathable. I was able to PR my 5K by 3 minutes. However, the only thing I didn't like was the heel wear in the outersole. It seems like it's not as durable as the previous version. I've already clocked in 200 miles so far.

Great Shoe

5

Started getting shin splints in my old shoes when I would go running. Being a 180 lbs guy I should not have been wearing Free Runs anyways, but I asked a knowledgeable friend and they suggested this site. I immediately found these shoes and fell in love. They fit great, (when you buy them a half size bigger than normal) they are very comfortable, and now I am able to go on 5k runs without any discomfort. Would highly recommend these shoes!

Cushioned!

5

Broke my foot last year and have been trying to find a decent cushioned pair of running shoes for awhile. I love new balance, but when I tried these, they seemed to offer the cushioning I wanted. I also tried the Gel-Kayano 21's and they were a VERY close second. We'll see how well they hold up but so far, I'm pleased.

Get a half size larger

I've worn the Nike Lunar Eclipse series for a long time. I like that the lace loops are now beneath some fabric. The shoes look and feel good to run in. My only gripe is that the shoes are about 1/2 size smaller than previous versions.

Like em for the most part

The shoe feel really good and provide good support, I just wish they were avaiable in more basic colors so they'd match more easily. I don't run at night so I don't need the neon strips all over.

I really like it!

5

I have only run 20 miles in this shoe but so far I really like it. The cushioning is great and it seems to help with some plantar fasciitis I have been dealing with.
