My shoe frustration is finally over! I am a natural forefoot striker who has been running for nearly 30 years. For the last decade or so I have been unable to find a comfortable shoe that fits my running style. On the contrary, some of the overbuilt, heel-heavy shoes I have tried were the likely cause of achilles tendonitis which has hampered my running in recent years. Then I discovered Newtons. Right out of the box I loved these shoes! First of all, they are lightweight and very comfortable. Sizing up one-half size (as I usually do with running shoes) gave me a perfect fit. Since I always land on the ball of my foot, "Newton running" felt natural to me right from the start. I immediately began running faster with less effort. For example, my times on a 6-mile training course are consistently 2-3 minutes faster than my typical values during the last 5 years. When you land on the "sweet spot" these shoes give you a very nice push forward. When my legs get tired I just concentrate on proper form and it feels like the shoes do the work for me. And for the first time in years, my runs are totally pain free. For runners who are not used to landing on their forefoot these shoes will require that you adjust your running style. Working through the learning curve will be well worth the effort - your performance will likely jump to a significantly higher level once you develop proper form. The Newton web site [@] has a wealth of information about running mechanics and running shoe science - check it out. Yes, these shoes are expensive, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Newtons are revolutionary, top quality shoes and I'd rather spend money on them than on doctor bills. To me, the Newton Distance shoes feel like "rocket slippers". My feet are finally free to "just run, baby!"
Very good shoe needed stab. insole
I purchased the shoe solely to try it out for the Chicago Marathon on 10/9/11. I tried the shoe without an insole on the tread mill and it did not have the stability I am use to. I weight 165 to 170 lbs. and run between 80 and 100 miles per week. I tend to supinate slightly so I use a high stability shoe to train and used the Newton Distant Runner S for the road races. I put in a Superfeet green stability insole and found (coincidentally) that the hard plastic insole support of the insole happens to terminate right at the rear of the Newton lugs. This provided very stable and light weight running during the marathon and seemed to propel the foot forward to meet the Newton shoe intent. I also found it very easy to switch stride which mentally I had to do since Chicago is such a flat course which does not allow the use of various leg muscles more typical of hilly courses. Short stride or long stride the Newton responded well. Recovery was instantaneous and I am off to try them again at New York on November 6th.

As an older runner (60+) I've tried a lot of shoes over the years. And, as I've aged, I've noticed the inevitable slowing down that comes with the passing of time. Long story short, after getting into more of a chi-running style and acquiring the Newton, I've noticed improvements in my race times and in my overall lack of pain/strain following longer training runs. I like this shoe a lot and will be interested in whether the improvements I'm seeing at the 5k and 10k distances will carry forward to halfs and full marathons.
I am learning to love these shoes
I used to be a "heel pounder". In my quest to run more efficiently, I purchased some reading material to help with my running form. Armed with this new knowledge, I purchased these shoes. At first, it was very difficult for me to get used to running with a mid/forefoot strike. My calves would be incredibly sore. I was not able to run as far or fast. It took 2 months to improve my running form and this is when I saw the true potential of these shoes. With each step you are propelled forward and the faster you run the better the shoes perform. I run about 20 miles/week, and I have only had the shoe for a few months, so I cannot speak of their durability, however, so far they are holding up really well. The shoes are light weight, very comfortable, and they breathe great. I wear size 13 in Nike. For these shoes I had to go with a size 14. I would recommend the shoes to anyone looking to improve their running form, speed, and economy. Just be patient.

Great shoes with a few upgrades needed
This is a great shoe, but it could be better. I love the way it feels on the foot, and it is a fast shoe. I've run my PR in the marathon in this shoe, and I always run a bit faster when I run in these. However, there are a few downsides. The shoe obviously is expensive, and it wears out rather quickly. I can live with those since I am a small runner and tend to get my money's worth out of any shoe. Where the shoe does need some definite improvement in on drainage. The upper is incredibly breathable, but once these shoes get wet they turn into solid bricks. They need a few drain holes to improve ventilation a bit, but more importantly to dry them out. I ran a 70km trail run in these shoes and my feet were a mess at the end of the race because the shoes got wet and just kept going up in weight!! Overall great shoe though with just a few areas of improvement needed.
Everything else is obsolete
Toss your old and new overly cushioned, heel striking trainers. There is a better, proven way to run with greater ease, efficiency and speed: Newtons. My 30 year affair with traditional shoes left me slow and tired with recurrent low leg injuries. Three months into Newtons, I trained longer and stronger so that my subsequent Honolulu Marathon was a breeze, increasing pace on the few hills, including that last one around Diamond Head at mile 25: Newton's forefoot running loves up hills where it comes naturally.
Adhere to the adaptation\transition instructions to Newtons carefully, and also know that you can get 'cocky' with all this newly returned strength and speed.
We are all still human, last I heard.
Give it time.
These are my second pair of minimal shoes. The first pair I bought were the Saucony Kinvaras, which I love. I decided after a while I wanted to throw another pair a shoes into the mix and bought the Newton Distance. These are amazing forefoot shoes. They keep you up on your forefoot more than the Kinvaras do. I see these being part of my shoe rotation for a long time. The only problem I had with them was getting use to the lugs. It took 30-35 miles to break them in. During the first few runs I could feel all three lugs pushing on my metatarsal. I have 50 miles in them now they're awesome. If you give these shoes time you'll love them.

I like minimalist shoes. My aged, multiple knee and hip surgeried body is happiest in them. These are the best I have found. I was surprised to learn over the last 3-4 years that I ran about 3-5% faster in my stiff, poorly cushioned Nike Free than in my comfy Asics Gel Nimbus and amazed that I had LESS joint pain. The Newton's are even better. The very first time I wore them I ran my usual 6 mile course in 1.5 minutes faster than I have in years, another 2-3% faster than the Nike Free. I am still horribly slow compared to 30 yrs ago so all improvements are most welcome but this degree of improvement is amazing. Not fond of the color but who cares?

Newton's are awesome! As a 25+ year triathlete I've constantly been on the lookout for innovative products that help my performance while enhancing my health and longevity. In the case of running shoes, I find it very important to run naturally on the forefoot vice the heal for speed and knee health. Newton's is a perfect shoe that meets my desires in these areas. I suggest that everyone tries them out! Now, I can't run in any other shoe -- they're just not as comfortably or 'springy' as Newton's!
I'm a triathlete training for my second ironman (IM Wales :-) ) and I'd read a lot about Newton's and the "natural running" concept. I bought these, taking a chance on a new brand of shoes (had previously worn Nike and Saucony). These shoes are incredible. For me, they've decreased the achey joint feeling I get after every run, plus my feet don't appear to be blistering compared to other brands of shoes. Overall, they 're an excellent product. I'm a little concerned about the wear on the shoes though, based on other reviews.
Floating on Air
Have put about 75 miles on Newton Perf. Racers S so far and have to say I am thoroughly impressed. I took a risk with the price, but it has paid off. My knees are a non-issue and am able put in faster and longer training runs compared to my old Asics Gel Kinsei's. I am 5'7'', 24 yo, 150 lbs and usually finish in the top 25 percent of my races. First half-marathon of the year coming up, so we'll how the shoes perform. Only recommendation to Newton is to lengthen the laces. I HIGHLY recommend these shoes to any and everyone.
Put an end to excessive heel strike!
Historically run in Saucony, but they have a short life due to excessive heel strike running form. Newton's focus on mid-foot strike and do work. As they promote, start slow with short distances. Alternating between Newtons and Saucony, gradually increasing distance my running form is not only improving, but becoming more natural requiring less concentration. Lightweight, good fit.
Cold weather requires 2 pair socks as they are designed to breathe. Heel striking doesn't stop immediately and heels show wear very quickly. Otherwise, accomplishing what designed to do.
Refromed Heel Striker
I made up my mind to give the whole natural running a try and these shoes have been heaven sent! They allow you to naturally land on your midfoot. By changing to this foot strike my hip and knee issues have all but vanished. It does take awhile to get used to them, but once you do...it is like butter! I went to a running clinic held by one of the founders of the company and it was very informative and it actually sold me on the shoes. They are very dedicated to their products and to the customers. I was very impressed! I am not sure if I will ever run in anything else besides Newtons.

I'm a 145 lb runner, who runs about 35 to 40 miles per week, I typically race right around the 6 min pace mark for most distances, and normally run in mizuno precisions or light performance neutral shoes, I found these shoes to be perfect. I was able to run sockless in the shoes right away, which is good for us triathletes. very light breathable shoe. Expensive, but I am now a believer in the shoes technology, the lugs in the forefoot that help rebound from impact, as they helped me smash my 10K PR, then beat by marathon PR, even though I had a bad cold for that race.
Easiest way to run
For years, I wondered why I only wore out the front part of running shoes. Now there are shoes made for natural runners (front foot strike). I have used these Newtons for a marathon, half ironman and training for a 39.3 with no injuries and an average improvement of :30 pace! They feel so easy and light to run in; almost effortless.
The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is the webbing by the pinky toe tends to tear at about 130 miles. I can still get 150-160 out of them, though.
Worth every penny!!
After many different orthotics and shoes I gave these a try and can't imagine running in anything else. They do take a month or so to adjust so take it slow. I cut my milage down for two months and built back up. I did have heel wear & sore calves at first but all is good now. I'm running faster with less effort. Can't wait to run a marathon in these.
I've got about 350 miles on them so far. I use them from everything from 5:30's to 7:30's, very versatile.
Run like the Wind
Whether running on a treadmill or on the road, the performance and comfort of the shoe is amazing. It is light, true to size, and contributes to the overall strength and agility of becoming a better long distance runner. The use of these shoes have made me notably faster and stronger. The downside to these shoes is that because they are so breathable, they take on water very easily and are certainly not warm in colder weather.

I REALLY LIKED THIS SHOE!
THE GOOD: CONFORTABLE, GREAT VENTILATION, VERY LIGHT, EXCELLENT FEET-ROAD FEELING, PREVENTS INJURIES. PERFECT SHOE FOR RACES BETWEEN 5K TO HALF MARATHON. BECAUSE OF IT TECHNOLOGY IT ACTUALLY PUSHES ME FORWARD, AND MAKES ME FEEL TO GO FASTER, FASTER, FASTER...
THE BAD: IN WET FLOOR IT SLIPPERS EASILY, NOT VERY SURE TO RECOMEND IT FOR FULL MARATHONS, THE OUTSOLE FINISHES VERY FAST.

Great shoes only down sides are the price and some inconsistance in sizing meaning ordered same size shoes but fit was off sent back and next pair was right on. Would have been a five overall if they reduce their price but will continue to buy them because I'm hooked.
No break in required wore a brand new pair for ironman marathon and had no issues with blisters
I'm a Convert
An Asics Gel Nimbus fan, I started using these shoes for racing and speed workouts but gradually starting using them for longer runs. They are light, with a breathable mesh upper and incredibly comfortable. I don't seem to get any tightness or strains even after a 15 mile run. The best thing is that they have helped me develop a more economical running style.

Light and bright
I am a recent convert to forefoot running, having spent years as a heavy heel striker. Tehse Newtons really encourage mid-to-fore foot running. Once I got the hang of it, running feels like floating. Plus, the super-bright yellow is great for nighttime visability.
A little pricey, and I have heard that they don't last that long, but these are new to me, so I can't say.
2nd pair and won't be my last
I run and I run a lot, I became a Newton believer with my first pair. I use to get ankle pain and it would eventually spread to my knee with other long distance shoes I have worn (Mizuno, Avia, New Balance). Walking could feel a little awkward but once you start running in these shoes it feels natural.. it just feels right... thats the best way to describe it ..
Best Shoe I have ever tried
I love this shoe, well worth the money. The Newton Distance S is the only shoe I have tried that has not given me blisters after running more than 3 miles. I didn't even have a problem running a marathon in these. They last about 300-350 miles before needing a replacement I would recommend these to anyone
CA / UT
Super light, fast. I switched from New Balance to Newton's and am on my second pair. The elasticity of the upper makes them a great fit for a wide foot at the regular size (doesn't come in widths, I'm 10EE, but these fit fine.) Ran 1/2 marathon in them and was very happy with feel and performance.
Top notch flat!
I have used this shoe for one workout on a treadmill. It tops all flats that I have worn in the past (brooks, asiscs, nike). I felt like I was working less and getting more benefit from the workout thanks to the design of the shoe. Way to go Newton! I also train in the Sir Isaac S. Newtons all the way!
AMAZING SHOE MAKES ME RUN FASTER, FASTER
AMAZING SHOE, BECAUSE OF THIS TECHNOLOGY OF MIDFOOT RUNNING, THE SHOE ASK ME TO GO FASTER, FASTER, FASTER. ITS GREAT! I RAN MY FIRST MARATHON WITH THIS AND FELT EXCELENT ALL THE WAY LONG. THE ONLY BAD THING IS THAT THEY HAVE NO TRACTION, SO IF I RUN IN WET PAVEMENT ITS VERY EASEY TO SLIDE.
I have used these shoes in two 50k's and love them, one on trail and one on road. I did notice that after long training runs, my arches hurt. They are a great shoe for shorter distances for me but the new distance is worth a shot, I just got a new pair. Happy running, and happy feet with these shoes.
This is the best shoe i have bought in a while. I have 5 other shoes all different brands I will not touch those now that I own a pair of Newtons. they are light weight, breathable and fast. Great for racing, I wear them sockless and have had no problems at all will buy more of these shoes.
I will buy again.
Break in, break in, break in. Use it with an open mind. After 25 miles of testing, I think it has really changed the way I run. It has improved for the better. I have run sub-50min, 6-milers twice at a lesser effort. It is very lightweight. For now, I do not see any CONS. Believe the hype.
mark the try-athlete
Everyone should start running on Newton's! They've re-energized my running! They're so comfortable, springy, light, and fast - it's just unbelievable that we've been running heavy-heeled shoes for so long! Just Try It!

Reappraisal\five stars: Switched from Gravity to Newton Distance for Honolulu Marathon: knocked off 30 minutes with little residual aches and pains, just performance with appropriate midfoot running form. Used to be a recurrently injured heal-striker; no more. Training pace brought down a minute a mile with sooner recovery from long runs. This is the real deal - better running times are up ahead with careful attention to running form.

I have run New Balance shoes for the last 15 years, but they quit making the 82x series at the end of 2009. I replaced them with the Newton Distance; it is a phenomenal shoe. Finding a New Balance 826 replacement was not easy. I shattered both legs several years ago, so my legs are a bit sensitive. The Newton takes a little bit of getting used to, but it is definitely worth it!

I have run many miles over 25 years in triathlons and marathons, in all these years I only had one injury training (plantar fasciitis) that forced me to stop running for three months and it was after using the Newton. I am a forefoot runner with 170 pounds and sub 3 in Boston and I will NEVER recommend these shoes.

I started mid-foot striking 4 months ago (June 2009) after reading Born to Run, and I like this shoe. Pros: Light, heal neutral. Cons: I with they were cheaper and had a bigger toe box.

This shoe will really make you faster. I typically finish in the top 10 overall in 5k to half marathon races as well as in triathlons (three - 3rd place overall finishes this year). I was racing with the Asics Hyper Speed 2 but switched to the Newtons using some prize money. I noticed a speed increase right away and this was compared to a lighter Hyper Speed 2! (Hyper Speed 2 is about 1.5 ounces lighter) Using my Garmin 310XT and heart rate monitor I did some testing and sure enough, the Newtons resulted in about 3% faster times at the same heart rate or the same speed with a 3% lower heart rate. No matter how I tested, the same 3% advantage went to the Newtons. And keep in mind this is compared to a lighter 6.8 oz racing flat using by Olympians! If you switch from a heavier shoe, expect even better results. Since using the Newtons, I've shaved another 15 seconds off my 5k time and my last races I placed 7th, 3rd, and 6th. I plan on running the Columbus marathon in my Newtons.

Have put over a hundred miles on them in two weeks. Great shoes, built great so comfortable I can run barefoot in them 9 miles with no blisters. After I corrected my form to better match the shoe (three days) then my per mile pace dropped by 20 seconds on my long runs from a 8:03 average to a 7:43 average for 15 plus mile runs. Plan on racing in them on Oct 4th in the lake front marathon.
