4-Lug forefoot Action Reaction with articulated lugs
I'm a fan of Newtons and wear the Motion and Energy. The BoCo's are a great improvement over the Newton Momentum trail shoe. Lower profile lugs and overall traction of the BoCo's is much better. Cushioning/feel is much like the Newton Energy. RR Sports suggests sizing 1/2 size up, you really don't need if you already wear Newtons and know your size. In my experience, Newton sizing is similar to Nike and Asics. I wear a 12.5 in Nike, Asics, and Newton. The only cons are the lack of arch support and a pronation control. I have mild pronation and these don't offer much support. I wish Newton would make a version with pronation control like they do their road shoes.
Great "everyday" shoes!
Love these shoes! The size 9.5 fits well and they size similar to the Newton Distance (NOTE: I wear a 9.5 with all Newtons but a size 9 for all other non-Newton shoes.). The "lug" under the ball of the foot is virtually un-noticeable which makes them a great all-around shoes that have style. I like to wear a very low rise shoe when not training, and these are my new favorite "go to" shoes when not training (I would presume many folks will like then for training, too...they are the wrong style for me when training for an Ironman triathlon).
The Iron Mike
Fine Trail Shoe, Bad Newton Shoe
This is definitely a better trail shoe than the Momentum (though I don't know that the Momentum is considered a "trail shoe"). Unfortunately, if you like Newtons, this doesn't feel like traditional Newtons. The shoe feels much wider, especially in the front. In my experience, Newtons have always been comfortably snug around the foot. Also, the key element of Newtons, the "lugs", are far less prevalent. In fact, I'd say this feels more like any other "normal" shoe than it does a Newton.
This might be a nice shoe for runners who have not liked Newtons in the past, but I wouldn't recommend it to runners who have loved Newtons for their unique feel. Not sure why Newton chose to diminish the lugs but I hope this isn't a trend in future versions of their line.
Great new trail shoe
A much better shoe than Newton's Terra Momentus that the BOCO replaced. The aggressive tread design provides much better traction on the trails, this shoe has better cushioning, and yet it is lighter than the Terra.
