I would give it 5 stars but PERFECT would be some boost midsole added ;)
I run a bit. About 70-110 miles a week. Mostly along challenging single-track and sharp rocks.
And after recently chewing through the Wile Horse (good at first but wear out and tear quickly), Salomon Sense 3 Ultra SG (still use, super firm and good for only the muddiest conditions but TERRIBLE on pavement), NB Fresh Foam 980 trails (still use and are good, too!), I decided to give these a whirl, after retiring the Nike's.
I didn't know what to expect, since all shoes fit great in a store, but how they handle on trails can be quite different. I'll happily say that these are officially my favorite trail shoe! The grip is PHENOMENAL in all but the muddiest conditions. Living in the Mid Atlantic, the trails were like running on a cold bowl of chili and they were perfect! After river crossings, the shoe didn't feel like it held an extra ounce (unlike MANY other brands that can feel like bricks after just a little splash). The grip, amazing, with the responsiveness of a road shoe, but protection that felt bullet-proof!
And the icing on the cake, these puppies even ran smooth during along the pavement to and from the trails!
Might get a second pair just because!

Excellent trail runner!!!
Saucony got this one right. These shoes are light and extremely comfortable from the footbed up. But from the footbed down they are all business. Aggressive tread, rock plate and impact protection while remaining very flexible and light. They are supposedly designed for those if us with high arches. I ran without my custom inserts first and decided to put them in anyway. Think it would work fine without but I'm just used to them. Another major plus is that these shoes are well cushioned. I was very surprised how much heel and midsole cushioning they provide without taking away from getting the response you want underfoot in technical terrain. Mud, rocks, gravel and hills. These are a must have if you spend most if your time blazing backcountry trails.
GREAT trail shoe
I wore the Peregrine 3 before I bought the current model. They did not disappoint! The new rock plate in the forefoot is more flexible (and more comfortable) than the previous model. This shoe is great for 3-4 in. of snow and does wonders coming downhill on rocky surfaces. I would highly recommend the Peregrine 4 if you are looking for a lightweight, comfortable trail shoe!
Wow!!! I really love the new Peregrine 4 from Saucony! I had tried the orginal version several years ago and was only moderately impressed. I had read a few reviews on the new update and decided to try it again. The new version is just as light as the previous models but has a way more rugged and durable feel. The traction from the outsole has been improved too.
Lightweight for the Trails
I had the Brooks Cascadia 8's but felt they were too bulky. I've need god support but have learned to run more on my forefoot. These shoes are great for the trails. I love them. Light weight but still rugged. If you are looking to move to a lighter shoe for the trails this is a good one!
Definitely consider these trail shoes!
I bought these shoes specifically for trail running and they didn't disappoint. While I've only used them for 2 serious trails runs at this point, I can tell they will last and won't wear out. They are light weight but have great tread. Plus, they are pretty spiffy looking too!
Solid Trail Shoe
Compared to my Cortanas and Fastwitch shoes, the Peregrine feels a bit heavy but it also provides much more protection on the trails and is much more stable off road. Overall, it is a good compromise between weight and protection for off road running.
First pair of Saucony's. Excellent fit and performance. I've worn these on the road, paved trails, and limestone trails with excellent results. I am hoping to find a similar fit with traditional running shoes by Saucony.
Nimble trail goat
Love it for trail running. Good connection to the earth, agile. Pick something else if you're a pavement pounder. Don't buy this shoe then whine about it, it's for a specific purpose. And the purpose is goooooddd!
Tough trail runner
This is my first pair of trail shoes and the Saucony Perigrine 4 does all that I hoped. True to size with great traction over a variety of surfaces.
Perfect shoe for trails
I got these for walking the park trails in Southern California. Very comfy, good traction.
