Having owned the GoRun and GoRun2 for shorter distance street runs (both great shoes), I was excited to lace up the Skechers Ultra. Having now put over 200 miles on the shoes (81 at the Badwater Salton Sea run), I'm very satisfied with the performance! The shoes, while much more cushioned and comfortable for long runs, remain flexible and light. The Ultras have an aggressive lug pattern that works well on trails. They also breathe well. With the optional insole removed, the 4 mm drop leaves a feel much like the GoRun2 or other minimal shoes. Compared to the price of HOKAs, the Ultras are a bargain. The only drawback I noticed is that they do not wear well on pavement (soft bottoms). I'm not sure I'd get 250 miles if all my running in them was on pavement. I like them so much, I've ordered a second pair.
Skechers is becoming the real deal in the running world!
Really good flexible trail shoe!
I really, really like the Go Run Ultra as a trail shoe. I don't run in it on the roads much, but that's primarily because of I prefer more ground feel when on the roads. (However, I have heard others say that it works well for them on the roads.) That being said, my trail running (about 1/3 of my total mileage) is on rooty, sometimes rocky singletrack and I needed something with more cushion to handle those trails. However, I still wanted a lightweight, flexbile shoe with a low heel-toe drop. This shoe really ticked all of the boxes for me. I bought them when they first came out and without the insole they are a 4mm drop. With the insole they are an 8mm drop. I run without the insole and it works well. Skechers' new 2-in-1 insole is even better, but I don't know if they have incorporated that into the GRU since I bought it or not. Either way, really, really good shoe.
A Very Nice, Cushioned, Quality Shoe!
I am pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and well cushioned the Ultras feel. They are not mushy like my maximalist shoes, and are pretty light. I have run in 8-10mm drop traditional shoes, lower drop more-minimal shoes, and maximalist shoes, and have decided that I prefer more cushioning, but without excessive heel drop or heavy weight. As for sizing, I did not size up as recommended and the shoes fit perfectly with plenty of toe room. These are quality shoes, and when you factor in the price, they are an outstanding value (I have gotten another pair already). Don't be put off by the brand or the price, these are the real deal.
Found a new favorite!
I was skeptically curious about trying an above-average cushioned shoe -- I run on sidewalks and pavement. Compared to my recent fave (Saucony Cortana), the Go Run Ultra feels on concrete as the Cortana feels on a rubber track. It is less than half the price of the Cortana or the Hoka line of ultra-cushioned. The slight rocker shape goes well with my midfoot Pose running style. When standing, sizing feels a quarter larger than the typical 1/2 size upping when standing. However, it feels fine when running as my feet do not slide around or blister.
Plush and Comfortable
I bought these more as "walking around" shoes than for running. They are very cushioned and feel very plush and soft, while still firm enough to run in. The upper fit very well, I barely had to adjust the strings out of the box. For how cushioned these shoes are, they are surprisingly light. After spending several long days on my feet in them, I seem to have less fatigue and soreness in my feet than when I wear less cushioned shoes (Brooks Ghost for example).
Light and Soft
Very light for a maximal shoe. The sole also has a bit more flexibility than a Hoka or the Brooks Transcend. This is a very good shoe for the price with very close to same impact cushioning as the Hoka's. It probably lies cushioning wise between the Bondi and Stinson. The Brooks however to me has better energy return so I do have to work a little harder to run with this shoe but the trade off is the cush. The shoe has very little structure comparatively so be ready.
I am a dedicated Hoka runner, and never thought a shoe could match them...this one does at half the price, regardless of that, cushioning is amazing w/o being cumbersome, excellent support, and the shoe is engineered to promote a mid-foot strike, with substantial propulsion properties....a new favorite!!
Very happy with my foot pillows
I was very concerned that running with all this extra cushioning would alter my stride or that the shoes would be heavier than I like. Neither one ended being a problem. The added bonuses are that these are super comfortable and WARM. I intended to use these for snow running once my trails are snowed in and they are going to be GREAT for that.
